The Brownwater Navy in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, includes the PBR units, the Riverines, the YRBMs, the advance bases, the helicopter and Seawolf units, the Naval Support Activity and all other Naval units operating in Vietnam. Even the Army joined the Riverines and there were rumors of Navy Infantry.

This Web Page is the start of a Web Book of Brownwater Navy photos, which were taken by the author who traveled TDY to various locations and keep his pentax camera ready.
Other veterans from all services have contributed photos and history.

If you send me photos to post in this Web Book I will credit your contibution with an email link.
Other Crewmen or friends can then contact you when they see your photo associated with a common place, vessel or event.
I am alway looking for photos or slides that define a place, event or naval vessel in Vietnam.
Photos of badges, pins and patches are also sought.
The photos do not have to be perfect.

    Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument

The Unit Memorial Monument is on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
The Unit Memorial Monument will memorialize all the Naval personnel
who died or are missing in Vietnam. The names on the monument are organized by
unit complete with Unit insignia. Includes support and auxillary units.

Funds are needed to complete the Unit Memorial Monument and
restore the Command Control Boat, Swift Boat and PBR displayed there.
Your donations to this effort would be appreciated.

The Last known Command Control Boat (CCB-18) has arrived in San Diego
and is displayed at the Vietnam Navy Unit Memorial Monument Site
on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
This was called by some a monitor boat.

Has Information on Image Formats, File Sizes and Resolution
Is a source for information on Special Scanners.
Is a source for information on Photo Editing Software.

__________HOW I FIRST DID MY SLIDES__________
  • I Purchased a generic screw mount slide copier and adaptor for my 35mm Camera [~$100].
  • I Used a 500 watt blue photo flood light as a light source.
  • I photographed each slide with Kodak Royal Gold 200 ASA Print Film.
  • I Scanned each 4in by 6in photo at 100dpi using a Mustek 800 IIsp flat bed scanner using ganna correction adjustments.
  • Picture Publisher 6 was used to size, repair and tone balance each picture
  • Saved each image in jpeg format with 25% compression.
  • Badges and Patches are interlaced gifs with transparent backgrounds.
  • _________ANOTHER WAY TO COPY SLIDES__________

  • Have a photography Shop copy your slides
  • Pay $0.70 to $1.00 for each print [No negatives are made].
  • You have no control over the quality.
  • __________ANOTHER WAY TO COPY SLIDES___________

  • Send your slides to photography shop and put them on a Photo CD
  • Pay over $1.00 per slide.
  • You can make your own prints and edit each photo.
  • __________A BETTER WAY TO COPY SLIDES AND 35MM FILM NEGATIVES_________

  • Purchace a Film and Slide Scanner [$400 - $500 minimum]
  • Scan your slides directly to your hard drive at up to 2400dpi
  • Scan your 35mm negatives directly to your hard drive at up to 2400dpi
  • You have as good quality control as a professional copy shop
  • You can edit, crop alter and improve each photo as required.
  • Refurbished Hp film and slide scanners are sometimes available at auctions
  • The better and larger photos in this Web Book are done with a HP Photosmart film and slide Scanner.
  • You are welcome to copy my web page images for your personal collection (private use).
