ON 4 SHIPS AND ASHORE I was on 4 different ships from 1965 to 1968 that went into Danang, Vietnam. I was the yeoman and mailman on the USS WHITE RIVER (LSMR 536) during 1967 & 68 and everytime we pulled into town I had to get the mail anyway I could, hitching rides up to the airport on jeeps, trucks, swift boats, etc. SHORE PATROL DRUNK BUS Seems like everytime I went to the airport it hadjust been hit the day before (and the shells always hit the village instead of the base).
Spent 2 weeks at Monkey Mountain being transferred from one ship to another in 67. The area was being shelled, I was on shore patrol and they made another guy and I escort the drunk bus all over the area wearing only billy clubs. That was weird, guards on a drunk bus while the Viet Cong were shooting up the area. Yes, Danang brings back a lot of memories. VIETNAMESE BEER The first time I went into Danang (1965) on the Wexford County we got to go over, I drank some Vietnamese beer and was deathly sick. Wouldn't you know that I didn't learn my lesson and in 67 while waiting on a swift boat ride down the coast to the White River on operation off that resort I set in the Vietnamese naval base drinking Vietnamese beer all day and got deathly sick again. The swift boat even ran aground in a bad area to do it in and I was so sick I could've cared less. --- Anyway, its fun to discuss fun times.
