MY THO VIETNAMESE NAVY RAG BOAT DOCKS

EMAIL: sonche[ at ]aol.com

This is a picture of the Vietnamese Navy RAG base. We had a boat dock attached to the end of their dock because at this time we had too many boats to tie up to our dock. We were located between the Vietnamese Navy and the Vietnamese Army bases. I hated to stand watch here because I was surrounded by Vietnamese. At night you would be the only American there. There was a park next to the restaurant. At night there would be Vietnamese men and women having sex there and encouraging us to watch. Some guys would watch them with binoculars. The first thing I thought of was they were trying to distract us. So, I would start throwing grenades in the water and threatening them with my rifle. This would upset the RAGs because they would live in their boats. Too bad. One night the American advisor tried to sneak up on me thinking I was asleep. He was only wearing green underwear and camo paint. I really enjoyed humiliating him. Guy C. Robinson

Temporary Boat dock
PHOTO 1
Temporary Boat dock during construction of a new Boat Dock. While it was here a mine was floated in and when the guard shot it (standard procedure for unknown items floating in the water). It blew up. The guard was hopitalized for a facial shrapnel wound.
The Victoria Hotel
PHOTO 2
The Victoria Hotel was the home of Riv Sec 531 and the NSA.
This was the youngest sailor we had at the time. He was crazy in love with a vietnamese "lady" called mumbles. She had been an RVN Officer captured by the VC and they cut out her tongue. Therefore, the name mumbles. Nov/Dec 1966.

My Tho Market
I was prepared for a year of bad chow after what they told us in Survival/Counterinsurgency school. When I arrived, we had fresh meat and vegetables. I thought it was great. One day while I was eating I noticed the guy next to me watching me eat. I didn't know him and he was making me uncomfortable. I asked him what he was looking at. He said aren't you going to pick the bugs out of your bread. I looked at those sesame seeds and they had legs. I found out that our food was coming from the Vietnamese market in MyTho. I went down to the market and after looking at the meat I ate a lot of C rations. Guy C. Robinson

Yoeman on Bicycle at Main Gate
The Picture on the right of the Base Yoeman on a bicycle is at the gate to the river base.

All my pictures were probably taken in the fall/winter of 1966 because after I took this picture I walked over to the left and sat down with my back up against a diesel generator to wait for transportation to lunch at the Victory Hotel.

A grenade came over the fence landing against the opposite side of the generator. The guard who is partially visible in this picture received a scratch on the back of the left hand just breaking the skin. I received a small piece of shrapnel in my left temple and my right knee and ankle. He was awarded the Purple Heart. I refused to accept it. I figured if I accepted a Purple Heart for such an insignificant wound I would probably get killed or get my legs blown off. A year later the shrapnel worked its way out of my temple. I had the others cut out a few years ago. Three weeks ago my wife dug some more out of my ankle. After this I didn't carry anything that wouldn't save my life.

Jane Mansfield

Jane Mansfield at a USO event in My Tho
She was our only USO entertainment the first year.
She did not entertain and was well over the hill.
We did get a laugh out of her though. She wanted to ride the boats. When she went down to the docks and got into one of the boats she asked what are those holes. Someone answered, those are bullet holes maam. She said could we get shot at where we are going? He replied, we could get shot right here maam. She said get me the hell out of here and left.

Vietnam Unit Memorial Monument

The Unit Memorial Monument is on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
The Unit Memorial Monument will memorialize all the Naval personnel
who died or are missing in Vietnam. The names on the monument are organized by
unit complete with Unit insignia. Includes support and auxillary units.

Funds are needed to complete the Unit Memorial Monument and
restore the Command Control Boat, Swift Boat and PBR displayed there.
Your donations to this effort would be appreciated.

The Last known Command Control Boat (CCB-18) has arrived in San Diego
and is displayed at the Vietnam Navy Unit Memorial Monument Site
on the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base.
This was called by some a monitor boat.
