NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY NHA BE
AERIAL PHOTO DURING CONSTRUCTION

This is the Nha Be Naval Support Activity Base on the Song Nah Be river in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. I believe it was 5 miles down river from Saigon on the south bank. A public highway runs to it from Saigon. I hitched a ride in a Chevy Impala for a trip there to get my debarkation orders signed. Strange to ride in a chevy after 11 months on a river.

The road to Nha Be was frequently closed due to VC action.

The were some major explosions at Nha Be.

In 67-68 I ran the fire dept at Nha Be. I also was in charge of building and mantance of the base fire boat. In 68 the base come under attack several times. We responded many times to the Shell Fuel Farm towards Saigon, to put out major fires. We also fought fires on the river as well as salvaged several ships that had been damaged.

Just before I left we had a major town fire with the only way to stop it was to push over several buildings.

While there I got to go on several PBR patrols where we saw action, fire at the bad guys from a Sea Wolf helo, and go on a Marine recon patrol and several other exciting things that had no conection to my job.

While I can remember being scared, and never seemly getting enough sleep, I do remember it as a great experience. after the service I went back to work as fireman and retired in 1987 and moved to small ranch in the little town of Evaro,MT.

As a member of an Army MAT, we worked Nha Be District for 3 or 4 months before moving on to Binh Chanh District. Sep to Dec 1968.

We used to go to the mess at Nha Be. We had a Boston Whaler with a 55 Johnson outboard and the only place to get it fixed was at Nha Be. We dropped it in the river once ; couple of the guys went up the river to work off some stress? They returned a little late, it was dark and the motor was lost to a anchor cable. Had to hire a couple locals to dive for it. Traveled all over Nha Be.

Went back in 1991 and made a visit via Honda (motor bike). They would not let us onto part of the old Nha Be Station - It is converted to VN military out post.

I was there when the big one went off as recorded in Chief Watsons POINT MAN. The boat capt referred to was SM1 H.J.(hog jaws) Manner, RivDiv 591. He was kia a few weeks later on the Vam Co Dong (slingshot), on the last patrol before he was to go to HI to meet his wife. RivDiv 592.

Eastern Mariner

PHOTO 4

The sunken ship is the Eastern Mariner which was sunk by a V.C. mine in front of the base at Nha Be while I was stationed there. One of our boats "salvaged" the ship's bell, which was then mounted outside of the officers' quarters on the base.

Rick Tingley gives this account.
EMAIL: rickandcarol[ at ]zianet.com

My name is Rick Tingley, I was on MSB 16 at Nha Be spring to fall of '66. We were sitting outside watching a movie, fighting off mosquitos, and drinking a cold beer when the air-horn of a base truck went off about 8:00 P.M. That was our "general quarters alarm'. We all met at the designated area and were informed that the base could face a heavy attack during the night. All watches were doubled up and we were told to abandon the base if attacked.

There were only about 60 of us there at that time if my memory serves me right. I was on the fuel pier, every one was pretty jumpy. We thought we saw swimmers in the water and we were running all over the place with flashlights and guns. My MSB had not yet arrived in country, so at midnight relieved of watch I went back to my tent, got inside the mosquito net and laid there fully clothed boots and all.

The next thing I heard was BOOOOOOOOOOM............... before the sound had subsided I had woken up, sprinted 75 yards to the river, and jumped on a PBR. We shot out on the river and saw people jumping off the stearn of the Eastern Mariner. They had anchored in the harbor for safety at night. Turns out that plastic explosives had blown a hole in her. Seal team dove on another ship anchored there in the morning and found enough plastic explosive on the anchor chain to fill the back of a pick-up truck. We stayed up and watched the stearn of the Eastern Mariner sink, I believe her cargo was powdered concrete for Saigon. A crane barge came down from Saigon and towed her to the side of the river and I bet it's still there today.

Returning from a Tra Cu mission after salvaging PBR 139.
Our mike 6 boat was sunk their at the pier at Nha Be as the packing around the shaft was loose as we had to tow a amy barge up to Tra Cu from Vinh Long and assist a mike 8 boat which was used as a floating dry dock to save PBR 139 and transport it back to Nha Be.
At the time we had orders to leave both boats at Nha Be
as they were being taken over by the Vietnamese Navy.

In 1969/1970/1971/1972 I visited NHA BE sevaral times on some Dutch Shell oil tankers to deliver JP4 from singapore. We always arrived in the evening so we have to stay at Vung Tau. The next morning we where supported by some very fast river boats and helicopters to go safely to Nha Be. Thanks Guy's.

When we arrived in NHA BE sommtimes we would get some of your guys on board to protect us against vietcong swimmers who would try to place a mine on de ships. Again Thanks Guys

We would sometimes trade a box of "Orange Boom Beer" voor a case of handgranats [for a case of hand grenades].
About the explosions I remmember that one of the oil tanks on the shore did blow up.
We did make a trip with van of de gunships from de helo base (see the pictures)

After I left de SHELL tankers I joined the DUTCH MARINE CORPS in 1973. I will retire next year (2003).

It was in the news. Thank God nobody was hit but I was just in country for about 30 days with bout another 330 days to go . We went out several times up the Saigon River on the ATC's and visited your Naval PX.
