It brings back a lot of memories for me as I was in Vietnam in 1969 where I served with the Royal Australian Engineers on board AV1356 Clive Steele as a gunner behind an M60.The Clive Steele was a WW2 LSM,commonly known as the "Jolly Green Giant". Most of our time was spent down the Mekong delivering 105 shells to your fire support bases like Cantho,Catlo.I have quite a number of slides of your boats taken around that region and some years ago purchased a book "The Brown Water Navy" by Col.Victor Croizat which I have read a number of times.Feel free to contact me ,keep up the good work mate.

Guest Record 629 I served on one of the cutters (Pontchartrain)assigned to Gunfire Support for the ATSB at Song Ong Doc. Our cutter was not the one involved in that horrible friendly fire incident on 18 May of '70, but I still get sick thinking about it. We had been there from 17 April to 10 May. We ran a Medcap at the end of April, and I understand that the Petty Officer who was killed was the skipper of the boat that took us up river for that evolution.
Pontchartrain returned to Song Ong Doc on the 26th of May.
God Bless you guys......

Guest Record 641 Thanks, Bubba. I can finally look at where all the stuff happened without going blitzo, if you know what I mean. I visited the Vietnam Memorial Wall in DC last Summer for the first time. It helped to get rid of some hostilities I have carried for many years. I am currently involved in a web-page site for POWs/MIAs and it is very time consuming gathering information but well worth the effort. We cannot allow ourselves to forget those who have not yet come home. Thanks again for the refresher course.

Guest Record 699 I was on the YRBM 20 from Feb '71 until the 20 was towed to Long Pier in April '71. Most of the crew was released with undated orders and were suppose to be on their honor to report to Annapolis in three days. C.W.Bell and I got our orders stamped in Nha Be (by the same yeoman from the YRBM 20 that left the date off) and didn't reported in until we got orders for our next duty station, ten days later. We lived at the Vic' and in that short time learned how to make money selling non-rationed items like candy, soap and tissue paper from the well stocked Cholon PX. From that point on I never spent my paychecks but managed to stay at the Vic' so often the people at the front desk kept room 701 reserved for me the entire year I was in-country. By the way; the terrace of the Vic' that's on this web sight says it's on the 13th floor. For your information, I have a booklet I saved from the hotel that says the terrace was on the 9th floor.
From there I went to the YW 126 and Bell went to the YF 866. On the YW, we spent most of the time tied up at Cat Lo skiing, drinking beer, shooting the .45 at empty beer cans in the water and watching movies. We had three mama-sans cooking and cleaning the YW until we got caught of the coast of Vung Tau with them onboard. The Craftmaster got sent to another boat and we got an Admirals inspection. Everything turned out OK because the Admiral knew the women were there just to clean and since they had worked on the Cat Lo base before they were hired to work on the YW, we all got off with an ass-chewing and a new Craftmaster that turned out to be a good guy - Chief Dixon. We then went back to parting everyday at Cat Lo or Vung Tau; except when our screw fell off and we spent six weeks at the Port of Saigon in dry dock. I spent about two thousand dollars at the Vic' during that time on the room, a girl, parting around town, food and consa. I have many great memories of Saigon but have yet to see other vet's talk about the "fun" stuff. Like the USO show on the YRBM just before it got towed to Long Pier that featured the big breasted girl that did a striptease and more, kicking back in the nets around the flight deck of the YRBM while getting a buzz and watching the helo's shooting tracers at VC all night and all the other cool stuff people don't want their relatives to know about.
The YW was more like "McHale's Navy" with our laid back lifestyle and constant focus on liberty call. I had a unique tour; my brother was wounded six weeks after arriving in-country and is still disabled so I appreciate my good fortune. You have a great web site. Thanks for your hard work. Rick Pratt

Guest Record 710 Hello fellow Gator Navy types and coast line sailors. I was on 3 LSTs and the USS WHITE
RIVER from 1964 to 1968, seeing action in Vietnam on each one. My memory is that we
were just doing the jobs assigned to us and didn't think anything about being heroes or
doing anything special. -- Looking back, we were actually heroes.
We did our duties, didn't think about doing anything else and deserve the kudos of the
AMERICAN PUBLIC. I know that the WHITE RIVER
received the SecNavUnitCommendation (2nd highest award in the Navy) an no telling what
else and I suppose each ship I was on received something.
I know that the USS WEXFORD COUNTY (LST 1168) was hit in Sept. 65 but fortunately the
shell didn't explode. We laughed it off at the time but looking back, I realize that the entire
crew is lucky to be alive. The TOM GREEN COUNTY and the WASHOE COUNTY were also
work horses and exceptionaly active and heroic, **Its really hard to believe that I could have
seen so much action in 4 years. Even rode helicopters off the White River going to get
the mail. Had to fly over hundreds of miles of jungles and even drop down in them to
let troops off going to and coming back from Chu Lai. A great experience but wouldn't
want to do it again. Me and my mail bag saw lot of action each time we pulled into port. Rode on swift boats,
tanks, jeeps, tanks that went into the ocean, everything. WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM anybody onboard those ships (White River from around Mar 67 to July 68) (Wexord County around Dec. 64 to Mar
65) (Tom Green County arund Mar 66 to July 66) ( Washoe County around July 66 to Mar
67) The dates and people are obviously fuzzy at this point, especialy as I drank Vietnamese
beer twice during those years and got completely wiped out. -- - - I spent several weeks
at Monkey Mountain in Danang getting transferred from one ship ot another, was on shore
patrol with a billy club and had to escort the drunk bus around the area while it was being
attacked (I've never seen anything so incredibly dumb), and spent the last day there waiting
for a swift boat to go down the entire coast of Vietnam to get to my new ship on operation
I waited at the Vietnamese naval base, drinking Vietnamese beer, don't remember much about
the ride down the coast except that we ran aground in enemy territory, etc. --- Anyway, it was
a four year blast and I even found time to bring home a Philipphino wife. Salutes to all!!
REMEMBER, we did the right thing. The USA let us down by fighting a limited war and
not going after the enemy in North Vietnam. Thats why we won WW11 and WW1, we went after
the enemy on their home ground (eventually). In addition, the protestors were protesting about the
wrong thing ..... They should have been saying, Get in there, fight, get it over with and come home,
not get out at any cost. REMEMBER, we can never fight another limited action. ITS WIN
OR ELSE. DON'T FIGHT A HOLDING WAR!!!!! I believe that we did learn that lesson.
WHAT EVER YOU DO..... Promote this slogan. No more limited wars. Go after the ENEMY.

Guest Record 725 There are so many memories. I just read the book Papa Bravo Romeo (PBR) and it was so vivid about the boat guys and all the bad stuff they had to face. I look back and realize just how damn lucky some of us were. For those of you that lost something or someone over there I feel for you as we all do. It was a different time and a different place and all of us were changed in one way or another. I went from a shy boy to a confident man when I returned...all because of the hard work, the arduous task, the great men that gave it all for what we believed was for our country. Right or wrong the war did alot of things to me and probably all of you and quite frankly I wouldn't trade those years for anything. Boy, I had been on old Fletcher-class DD's, but those T's were really antiques. Had a Loran on there that was so old, had to manually count each step. Record 946 I served on the Krishna 69-70 mostly in the rivers as MRFN. I was in repair, working on swift boats and any other craft that were damaged. I have looked at other web sights and every one seems so upbeat about their tour. I guess people deal with it in their own way. I remember how bad some of the boats and sailors were shot up and it is mostly bad things I recall. One of the worst was Garza a shipfitter that worked on the barges with us, one of my friends and one of the gang. My friend Garza did was not a happy man, one night he took a grenade to shipfitters locker, pulled the pin and bent over on it! It was listed as a ship board accident by the Navy. I just want his shipmates to remember him for who hw was, not for what he did. Thanks for listening to me. James
