I was a Seaman aboard the USS Winston as a Hospital Corpsman stricker who volunteered to go to Vietnam on June 1, 66. I boarded the YFU 68 for duty in Danang and we took cargo down the rivers of Hue and the DMZ. That year of duty was a turning point in my life and I am forever grateful to the fine group of young men I served with on that small boat. As a young 18 year old lad, I grew up on that boat and became a better man because of it. I still remember the names and faces of those I served alongside and I hope all of you are well and happy. Special mention must be paid to one man aboard, Nathaniel Hawkins, a dear man who I'll always admire.

Ran the coast on the YFU-70 for about 6 months before going back to Comm. at the Triangle then moved to Camp Tien Sha Annex. Really remember that Dong Ha bridge and "surfing" the boat into Tan My and Cua Viet. Spent my 20th birthday anchored off Cua Viet watching the Cruisers/Destroyers shell the beach just north of Cua Viet (Feb 14, 1970). Looking for RMSN/RM3 Ed Daniels from Kansas City, Mo. who was transferred down to Vung Tao sometime early 1970. If anyone knows of him please let him know that Goose is trying to make contact. Hung with 4 shipmates for about 20 years, but we've all drifted. Kent, I'll try to send pictures as soon as I can find them - burried amongst 1000's of others. If memory serves me, I've got some good ones!!!! Welcome home to all my brothers and sisters!!! Job well done!!!

River rats in 1967 with Mine Squadron 11 Det "A". Assigned to MSB 34. Don't know what can be said that hasn't already been said. I shut out Viet Nam for over thirty years but it all came rushing back. Now I want to know what happened to some of the men I served with even though I can't remember all of the names. I don't want to open any wounds for any one and if they are not willing to share with me some memories I understand. If anyone has any information about reunions or any memorabelia that is available for the Brown Water Navy I would be interested in hearing from you. In particular is it possible to obtain a black beret or any of our insignia? Does anyone know how to get the ribbon awarded by the South Vietnamese gov't? I would like to know what happened to the men, boats, base, and SEAL team in Nha Be after I left in late '67. I was sent home just before TET and often wondered what happened to our unit. Thanks for any information you can share.

I found a picture of myself and ship mates on your site captioned "crew takes a break between mortar attacks". Just wondered who submitted the photo. Myself, Chris Marshall and Roy Haake plus two unidentified fellows onboard YD-220, the big crane. Haake and myself were 2 of the 3 man crane crew on the crane. Some of my experience at Dong tam seems as fresh in my memory as if it were last week. Probably fueled by my own photos and those I've discovered on these wonderful websites. Some is kind of foggy. They could have come up with a better way to keep thing cold than that big ice chest, but ice and ass day was always fun. Was at Phouc Xyuen for a couple of months, running night patrols and day sanpan searches, mostly night patrol. Ended up at Song On Doc and was there Oct. 20th the night the base(a group of barges tied together) was attacked. We were up river on night patrol when the attack on the base started. Our boat Beelined (7 knots on a Tango is beelining)back towards the base. The radio erupted with all the boats calling in their reports. The base also supported a Vietnamese PBR group, so they had a barracks on the base. The only time they went out was in the day, but they were our brothers in arms, lol. They lost a 14 men in the attack, and we suffered 2 KIA. Ammo was kept in quonset huts, along with supplies and there was a ammo bunker on shore from the base (remember the base is 3 barges tied together and floating on the river, a Mobil Advanced Tactical Support Base is what the military term was. Back to the ammo bunker on shore, Froggy and I spent many a great mornings in that bunker, my pipe was Jason. The best Opium was the old papsan in back of the cafe. Back to Oct. 20th, 1970, As we headed back to base we got ambushed to try and slow us down, blew through that, never fired my 20MM. By the time we got back to base it was in total fire ammo going off everywhere, we spotted a salior trying to get wounded into a small boat. I was on the bow line so I jumped off the boat and helped him get tied up to the our boat. T-3 was assined to take all wounded to an LST about 6 miles off the coast. For those that were there it as an eveing you don't soon forget. Of all the wouned we treated as far as I know none died, thank the lord. Was stationed at SOD on Tango-3. Was there the night in Oct. the base was attacked. Our boat was up river on night patrol when the attack on the base went down. I guess charlie waited till we got to the farthest point up river before attacking. When we realized the base was under attack we made a beeline back, was ambushed on the way back but blew through it. By the time we made it back to the base it was in total flames. Joe Blank, our boat captain, pulled the boat up to the base, I jumped off our boat and assisted someone trying to get wounded into a small boat. Once we got away from the burning base our boat T-3 was assigned to take all wounded out to a supply ship stationed in the gulf. As far as I know the treatment we gave to the wounded prevented any deaths. Thank you lord. The next day we took a bunch of ruff puffs up river so they could hunt down the NVA that attacked the base. When we went back to pick them up they hadn't moved from the spot we dropped them off at, typical! Other members on my boat besides Joe Blank was Tom Rainey, Pappy (a bosun who'd been in for 20yrs), TJ ( can't remember TJ's actual name)and Jim Ball. Great site you have and would like to hear from any of the guys who where there at the time stationed on the heavys, we never got our due respect for our efforts, the plastic fantastics, who never went out at night, always got the glory. I was the patrol leader of boat 113 on 2/3/67. I have read on two separate sites that August Johnson was not a member of section 513, but of two different river sections, and was a crew member of a boat other than 113. I would like to inform every one that those web sites are wrong. I also read a seawolves' web site and wished to thank them for the tremendous support they gave us on the river.Another man would have died that night from shock and the other wounded man would not have received medical help for quite some time if they had not dropped down into a hostile area and grabbed them and flown them to vinh long. It may not seem important to some ,but i fee that Johnson ought to be included with the men he fought with. Thanks for providing me a way to make this statement.

I visited SEAL Team ONE platoons on SeaFloat back in 1970 and went out on a few operations. Later, I was assigned to the Biet Hi detachement led by LCDR Spinks EOD as the main USA Advisor. We lived on the beach with the BietHi. My main job was to ride the Swift Boats which were escorting the sand barges for the construction of Solid Anchor. Worst job and a total waste of time for a Navy SEAL to perform in the 'nam war games! I served in Sa Huynh,RVN (Gilligens Island) from 1968-1969. I was on the USS Boxer LPH4 out of Norfolk, Va when I volunteered for PBR's or Swift boat duty. I was turned down because I didn't have enough time left in the Navy for the school. Little did I know that Bureau of Naval Ops would send me to Coronado, Ca for a SERE school then off to VietNam. I reported into DaNang after an all night airplane trip on Contenental Air Lines. We all joked and laughed most of the way over but within 5 minutes of arriving we received a rocket attack and I knew it would be on for the next 12 months. I took a helicopter ride to Phu Bai then convoyed to Sa Huynh. I loved the island surrounded on three sides by water. We had three or four main row bunkers, a hardstand, a bridge going from the hardstand to the billets, a shower made of a quonset container, an EM club, and one LCM 8 boat that got sunk during TET. I volunteered all the time to make the supply run north to Chu Lai and sometimes we took enemy fire and sometimes we didn't. My good buddy Chuck from Chicago took the run one day, hit a land mine with enemy sniper fire, burst his ear drums and made it alive. I loved my 12 months there filling sand bags, wadding out waist high in the ocean to receive supplies from the Blue Jay USN supply ship, also burning in the water while hooking the oil lines to the oiler off shore. I made many good friends during my year there and would like to know where they are. We are all in our late 50's and 60's now. If anyone would like to write, please do so. I would love to hear from you. My brother Donald made a Gilligan's Island patch after I got home to NC. I still have it today. Regards shipmates, Mike

The ones I can remember are Dykes (Craftmaster), Merritt, Winger, BM1 Lowe (Craftmaster in training) & “Calabrise” (spelling ?). I can’t remember our gunner’s (I think he was from Texas) or engineman’s names. I have photos of four others I can’t place. What I do remember are long hot days doing 7 or 8 knots (on a good day) between Danang and Chu Lai, Sa Huynh, Tam My, Cua Viet, & Dong-Ha. Hauling almost any kind of cargo beer & bombs. I was diving officer at SCRF Danang 9/68 to 9/69. We had about 15 divers and LCM 8 boat crew and we performed salvage, rescue and diving operations from Cua Viet down to Sa Huynh. Operations included salvaging a PCF at Sa Huynh (don't remember the number, maybe PCF 105?), assisting with recoveries of YFU-62 at Cua Viet, some PBR pump-outs, a lot of harbor clearance, POL repairs, screw repairs, and much, much lobstering for trades with the "local authorities" at Cua Viet, Tan My, Chu Lai, and of course our very home port, Danang. It was a busy year helping many committed shipmates and colleagues from the other uniformed services. This is a wonderful web site, and it is good know that we vets can still share some comeraderie. Great site. I served under MM-1 Felix Penia in "A gang" on the YRBM-21 from June 1970 till November 1971 as a MM-2 school trained AC&R mechanic and what other else needed fixing. I met and eventually married a young lady there named Bac who worked first for the EOD team as a hooch maid/ bartender/med cap interpreter and later worked as an interpreter for Dr Carling in sick Bay. We were married in Viet Nam in August 1973 and came to the US in April 1975 on the evacuation of Sai Gon. Long and not too interesting story about what I was doing in Viet Nam later as a civilian. What happened to the YRBM-21? I visited her once in December while attached to the YF-866. MM-1 Penia was still on board. I was serving at Activity Craft Nha Be and was attached for a while to the YF-866 and later to the LCU-1498 I was at my desk at Activity Craft Nha Be Janurary 1972 when we got word that an American ship had been sunk near Chao Douc. Warrant Officer White looked at me and said, "That must be your old unit, the 21." I answered, "No. When I left her she was at An Long and we haven't sent a Tug Boat to move her." Later MM-1 Penia stopped by on his way out of country and confirmed that he didn't remember being sunk and as he was on the 21 at the time that the American Civilian Cargo Ship was sunk he'd likely remember if it had been the 21. Bac is from An Long and I have returned to An Long several times. As best as we can determine the Vietnamese Navy found her surplus to their needs and sold her. The best information is that she became a floating restaurant in the Philippines. The other story was researched by a former YRBM-21 cook later a newsman from Argentina. He returned to Viet Nam to write a story about the fate of the 21. From his interview with a VC soldier involved in the sinking of the Cargo Ship he concluded that it was the 21 that was sunk. I believe from my research and family contacts that he was honestly mistaken.

Although I spent a few years aboard the 838, My usual post kept me a distance from the crew usually. My minor claim to fame was as follows. Although as we all know drinking on board a U.S. ship is usually against regs, there was a policy on the 838 to lower a LCVP over the side on Sundays to in effect have a floating beer boat. This same LCVP was also night time perimiter security. I was one of the 3 guys that manned the LCVP, and nominally the captain of the craft, as the XO was informed by the CO Lt CMDR. After leaving said XO on the beach designated Foxtrot Foxtrot on Xmas of '69 upon his refusal to give me his weapon upon boarding my craft. The next morning when he wis a bit more sober and alot more pissed we stood in front of the captain, the XO was informed that rank aside I am the captain and responsible for my crew on my boat and thus the little guys win one. Anyway since I slept days and patrolled at night my contact with most of the crew was limited, but I think of the glory days once in a while, and look for Crone and Eddy's? names om the Wall. KIA 8/8/69 I think. Drop a line if you like. I remember names and have some pictures. J.W. Pries

Stationed in Nha Be from about Sept. 69 to March 70. Was a RM and had to make runs to Saigon during the off hours. The first time I went to Saigon, I got the worst headache I ever had - none as bad since then either. I swore I would not do that again. Well, the next time I was to go, I told Chier Mercer that I had lost my military drivers license. He was pissed. About two weeks later, the good chief called me into his office and said: "Hicks, I have nothing against you, but it is your time to go into the field." I spent the next six months at Thuey Nhon, a PBR support base about five miles from the Parrots Beak in Cambodia - No I was not with John Kerry at the time - and the base was a staging point for our guys who went into Cambodia. That was when President Nixon wanted to see if we could stem the flow of arms, etc. coming in from there. As I recall, nothing much was found. One night a couple of Mike boats - full of armaments "docked" at our base and some sappers placed some explosives on the hull. And BOOM! The only problem was, THANK THE GOOD LORD, the sappers placed the explosives too far to the rear of the boats and they just sank without causing much other damage. Would love to hear from others who were there during that time. Anyone remember "ballbags?"

Hi Guys, Wow, this brought back some memories looking at the shots of Nha Be. I was a 20 year old Apprentice Officer on the Shell Tanker Hatasia. We used to dock and discharge our cargo there. Remember discharging into a 5000 ton tank of mogas that had a live motar round rattling away in it after a load of incomings the previous night. Got back to UK after my tour on board and volunteered at the US Embassy but they would'nt let me join up. Something about being a mercenary??? Since then, been in the Iran/Iraq war on Kuwaiti tankers being shot at there, Operation Earnest Will and just for kicks arrived in Kuwait 4 hours AFTER Saddam. Fortunately I was Captain of the ship so we just turned and got the heck out as quickly as possible. Hey Guys, we're merchant Marine.....No Guns!!! I served as the engineman on A-92-4. The Boat and all of the crew members survived 7 rockets. April 4, 68, we took three, one thru each gun mount and one into the coxswain flats-everyone was wounded, 4 severely and I never saw them again. In Sept., we took one rocket into the canopy frame on the fantail-everyone there was wounded, two severely and I never saw them again. In Nov., we survived a hit on the starboard side without causualties. In Dec. 1968, we took two more rockets on the port side of the coxswain flats. Four of us were wounded, two severely and I never saw them again. We were on Operation Giant Slingshot at the time. Due to my wounds, I was removed from the boats and went stateside at the end of Feb. 1969. I have approximately 45 minutes of super 8mm film taken while on the boats and have transferred it to vcr. About five years ago I was asked by a local high school history teacher to speak to his pupils about my experiences and reflections of my military service in Vietnam. I replied that I was not a combat soldier and his students would be more interested in hearing that side of the war. My side seemed somewhat mundane. He insisted that I come. I did. And my life has gotten some of its pieces back simply by me telling my story to those high school students. For nearly thiry years I had surpressed my belonging to the family of Vietnam Veterans. I am not sure why I did that. It could have been out of a sense that it had been an unpopular time for military history or my duty seemed so insignificant or I just did not want to talk about it. But telling my story has opened me to a sense of belonging. I am not hardcore about it but I do have a renewed understanding of the saying "We went together as strangers and came home as brothers." No matter where one served or how one served we all served our nation in the duty to which we were called. My appreciation to each soldier, sailor, airman and marine can never be overstated. To every Vietnam Vet I say from my heart WELCOME HOME. GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU. And to the memory of those who gave it all, I will cherish their sacrafice as long as I have breath.

I enjoyed looking through your photos. I was an Army Advisor with MACV, Advisory Team # 93. My 5 Man Team was located in the town of Binh Dai, in the Province of Kien Hao. Our dock was located on The Song My Tho, where I was dropped off by PBR several times when I couldn't get a Chopper home. I stayed at your PBR Base in My Tho a number of times. You guys had better food then my District House up in Kien Hoa. Did some Operations with PBR's, Sea Wolf, and the Junk Force. I don't remember the Division Number, but the Call Sign was Druid Patrol. Thank you all, you did a OUTSTANDING job, Welcome Home.

Enjoyed seeing the sight. Keep up the good work. At ASTB Vhin Gia we Where told one day a large force of NVA was heading our way and we where going to be evact. Later we where told there was to much activity in the area and chopers could not be spared for an evac. Shortly after we started receiving heavy motor and rocket firer as well as small arms fire. After what seemed to be a real long time I got to see one of the most beutifull sight ever, Puff The Magic Dragon workin' out. THANK YOU PUFF. I left Vhin Gia about a week before the drive into Cambodia would like to hear what happened to that base. I heared a rumor it was over run shortly after I left.

I was stationed on the Hunterdon County for a year from 1968 thru the beginning of 1969. If anyone remembers me I need verification of being on the ship during that time frame for the V.A. I need verification that we were in -country plus that we were attacked by the V.C. crippling our boom that lifted PBR's out of the water to be worked on aboard ship. I need verification that we were in a "free fire zone" many times and that we were in the MeKong Delta. The V.A. is requesting this verification by statement from a fellow crew members. I need proof in a statement that we were sprayed by Agent Orange on numerous occasions. If anyone that reads this message is able to help me in any way it would be greatly appreciated. Gerald R.
