I was on Swift Boats and we often tied up to the YRBM's. We enjoyed eating in the mess, watching a movie, the beer barge alongside, and the Sunday steak barbecue. The PX (I forget what it was called) was the only place to buy stuff for months. I only slept in the crew quarters the first night on a YRBM, even though it was air conditioned most of us decided we preferred to sleep on the boats.

I found your site from the Swift Boat Home Page. I served on PCF-16 and 69 from August 1968 to August 1969.
Though I served in I Corp, I enjoyed your site. We lived on APL-5 while in Da Nang and then moved to a
barracks in approx. October of 1968. There was no air conditioning in the barracks.
My PCF-69 patrolled the Cua Dai river from March 1969 until our crew was broken up in approx. July, 1969.
At first, only the VNN junks from Coastal Group 14 patrolled the Cua Dai followed by the Swifts.
Eventually the Monitors arrived followed by the PBRs. The PBRs were probably the best boat for this
river because of their shallow draft. Our Swifts could easily match the fire power and speed of the PBR... but
not their shallow draft and turning ability. They were wonderful boats.... as were my Swifts.

Record 802 I was an 'intelligence/combat' photographer, whatever that is, stationed with UDT-13 and spent a week or so on board the USS TERREL COUNTY prior to SEAFLOAT being built. While there, we had a few search and destroy operations, got ambushed a couple times and ate some good chow on board the TC. Our OIC was LT Bruce Dyer (retired as CAPT).
The officer in charge of creating SEAFLOAT flew in one day while we were 'hiking' along the river bank with an eye out for local inhabitants with AK's and we gave him some protection from whatever as we checked out Old Nam Canh and some other places in that area. SEAL One had some guys hot bunking with us. MM1 Moki Martin, Solano, Gore, Farmer, and Dee Daigle were there. LT Tim Wettack was the SEAL OIC. They worked at night and we worked during the day.
Prior to my arriving, PCF 43 got blown up on the river by a VC attack that ultimately set off all the demolitions on board. During the firefight, Doc Worthington the UDT Corpsman, the skipper of the boat LTJG Don Drosz, and the coxn of the PCF, QM3 Tom Holloway, were killed. Most of the UDT men and most of the boat's crew were wounded. As a result of this action, John Lowry of UDT-13 got the Silver Star. Art Ruiz and Mike Sandlin of UDT were wounded. Art went home for a while and later came back on active duty. Mike returned to duty after a bullet hole through his thigh healed. He's not back on active duty as a recruiter for the SEALs. Record 915 In the spring of 1970 we moved some boats [swifts] from seafloat to the mekong in support of an operation to cease arms movement out of Cambodia. Our boats were used for insetion of army [Green Berets I think] for making a sweep of an island that layed both in Camboadia and Nam and then stood off to give needed fire support. While holding off about 1/4 mi. reported to boat officer that small arms fire was coming from one of two houches [huts] on shore. This info was relayed to those in charge and was given orders to lay in 50cal fire on targets. Walked in 50cal onto houch #1 and it went up in ball of flames. One NVA tried to ecape to other houche and took him out. Ground ops captured number of arms in 2nd houche. I don't remember the name of this op, but we had support of Seawolf and Cobra gunships.
Before or after this op we were policing river traffic coming out of Cambodia and the largest and highest Noahs arc like barge came down river. we determined to leave it alone and let it be searched by an other group
