Spent short time on YFR 890, from October, 67 hauling supplies and ammunition up and down from Saigon to Dong Tam, Sadec, all the way down to Binh Thuy and back. Left the boat in late January to go to NSA, Cholon Compound, just in time for Tet offensive of 68. Did two tours and returned unscathed in May of 69. Thanks to all who served honorably, thanks to the PBR guys for pulling our butts out of trouble more than once. Will never forget sitting in the Mekong river for 12 hours, having run aground, for the tide to come in, so we could continue. Like sitting on a lit powder keg. Great website. Keep up the good work. God Bless all.

Great pics and website. Served from Oct.67 to Jan.68 aboard YFR 890. Up and down delta from Saigon to Vinh Long (Binh Thuy)delivering food and ammunition. Sa Dec, Dong Tam, Nha Be, My Tho, and all the beauty spots along the way. Fortunately, I transferred to NSA, Saigon just before the Tet Offensive in 68 and spent the remainder of two tours there. Thanks for bringing back lots of great memories, and some not so great. Keep up the good work. Wish I could make the reunion in Vegas, but am unable this year. Maybe I can make one in the future. If you hear from any guys who worked in the supply office at NSA Saigon during my tour, please forward to me. Would like to contact some of them. Have been in touch with Tom LeFavour, who has a link from your page. Thanks again.

Hey there! Did my Navy time in Okinawa '63-'67. Worked for AB&T on Tugs Michael and Cayuse in Danang and Vung Tau off/on 1968-1972. Had many USN buddies in both locations. Looing at the river maps is a trip back in time (although I think of that life quite often). I just wanted to say hello to all of you guys and just remember that you were a part of history and that those days are never to be repeated in your lifetime. For better or worse, one hell of a time! Served on board LCU1499 ( I really did--I was the cook) from Aug 68 to 69. Now that I think back it was good duty in comparison to the guys in the bush. We would pick up supplies in Danang and bring them up or down the coast, then up river to deliver our load and back again. We had fresh food, a place to sleep and a shower and head. What more could a person ask for. While I was there I took many photos and movies too. Many thanks to Kent for a great site. If any one wants some photos of the boats and rivers, I'll be glad to scan some to you

Thanks, Bubba. I can finally look at where all the stuff happened without going blitzo, if you know what I mean. I visited the Vietnam Memorial Wall in DC last Summer for the first time. It helped to get rid of some hostilities I have carried for many years. I am currently involved in a web-page site for POWs/MIAs and it is very time consuming gathering information but well worth the effort. We cannot allow ourselves to forget those who have not yet come home. Thanks again for the refresher course.

I was on the YRBM 20 from Feb '71 until the 20 was towed to Long Pier in April '71. Most of the crew was released with undated orders and were suppose to be on their honor to report to Annapolis in three days. C.W.Bell and I got our orders stamped in Nha Be (by the same yeoman from the YRBM 20 that left the date off) and didn't reported in until we got orders for our next duty station, ten days later. We lived at the Vic' and in that short time learned how to make money selling non-rationed items like candy, soap and tissue paper from the well stocked Cholon PX. From that point on I never spent my paychecks but managed to stay at the Vic' so often the people at the front desk kept room 701 reserved for me the entire year I was in-country. By the way; the terrace of the Vic' that's on this web sight says it's on the 13th floor. For your information, I have a booklet I saved from the hotel that says the terrace was on the 9th floor.
From there I went to the YW 126 and Bell went to the YF 866. On the YW, we spent most of the time tied up at Cat Lo skiing, drinking beer, shooting the .45 at empty beer cans in the water and watching movies. We had three mama-sans cooking and cleaning the YW until we got caught of the coast of Vung Tau with them onboard. The Craftmaster got sent to another boat and we got an Admirals inspection. Everything turned out OK because the Admiral knew the women were there just to clean and since they had worked on the Cat Lo base before they were hired to work on the YW, we all got off with an ass-chewing and a new Craftmaster that turned out to be a good guy - Chief Dixon. We then went back to parting everyday at Cat Lo or Vung Tau; except when our screw fell off and we spent six weeks at the Port of Saigon in dry dock. I spent about two thousand dollars at the Vic' during that time on the room, a girl, parting around town, food and consa. I have many great memories of Saigon but have yet to see other vet's talk about the "fun" stuff. Like the USO show on the YRBM just before it got towed to Long Pier that featured the big breasted girl that did a striptease and more, kicking back in the nets around the flight deck of the YRBM while getting a buzz and watching the helo's shooting tracers at VC all night and all the other cool stuff people don't want their relatives to know about.
The YW was more like "McHale's Navy" with our laid back lifestyle and constant focus on liberty call. I had a unique tour; my brother was wounded six weeks after arriving in-country and is still disabled so I appreciate my good fortune. You have a great web site. Thanks for your hard work. This is a good site. I have seen writings and pictures of boats in the Mekong Delta, and even the Coastal Patrol type of craft, but never anything on River Operations in I Corps, particularly covering the Cua Viet River. I guess us Army "boatie" (Aussie friends term) took over after most of the US Navy and Marine Corps returned home. You Navy guys should take your place of "Honor" for your duty in I Corps during the more dangerous and critical phases of that War. "Brown Water" was not exclusively the Mekong Delta. Adios, Beau

I have some pictures, not many of the time from December '67 until leaving in April '68. I do have pictures of the '59 after the incident in Duc Pho in '67. I saw a sight from someone that was on the '59 after that period.I have pictures of the 97th Heavy Boat Company Beach at Cam Ranh and the '47 on dry dock at Cam Ranh in '67. I also have pictues of many of the boats of the 97th. I believe I have a slide of the '39 after the mine attack in '68 with her hull bent in the well deck about a foot. I haven't looked at the slides for a few years so I'm not sure what I have. I would like to hear from some of you, getting old now but still working and still making it happen.

We also got involved in pulling the Third Marines out of Quang Tri back in November and December of 69. The last month of two of my tour was spent on LCU-1475, getting it fixed up to turn over to the RVN Navy. The RVN's needed a boat in much better condition than we Americans required. Never forget going south few days before Thanksgiving 1969 to unnamed beach to moved an Army Const Unit. After removeing a tank and an APC went back for third load. There were 5 to 15 foot waves that day from a typhoon moving in. As we went in a wave broached our Mike 8. A dozer operator with the Army Const Unit had been pushing us off the sand bar till we could back under up our own power. Needless to say this time another wave came in as he pushed us off. The blade of the dozer cut a hole below the water line unknown to us . As we backed off we lost power two one engine, side with the hole. The mike 8 set prowerless around 40 yards off the beach on the sand bar. Had to tie it off to a dozer wench line. We set there on the beach till after Christmas waiting out the storm with the Cont Unit and an Army guard.A choppter flew in every day with mail for some, long rats and always a couple bottles of booze. Our secured beach (200x200 yds ? maybe) was next to some unknowen river.at the base of a mountian of DaNang at and old village site around 2-3 days by Mike 8 They finally got a Navy sea tug to pull our boat off and we headed back to DaNang. That first meal on the tug, steak and fries I can still taste. As we got Monkey Mountian in view, the tow line on the LCM broke. It ended up sinking in sight of the docks at Monkey Mountian. Anyone who remembers this Christmas of 1969 in Nam? Email me.

I reported to NSA Danang June 66 and was assigned to literage. At first I worked at the ramp and in August we took the LCM8-860 up the Thu Bong river as part of a marinecorps search and destroy operation called "Swanee". We ended up leaving the Mike boat on the river and returned to Danang by truck via hill 55. When we got back I had orders to go to Japan and be part of a group to pick up three U-boats, I was assigned to YFU 62. I had heard that she had been mined shortly after I had left, but had no confirmation of it until tonight when I saw her picture on your web site. I'm wondering if anyone out there knows what happened to the crew, I sure would like to find out, if any of you guys are out there drop me an e-mail.

I have really been enjoying these pages. They bring back memories like going back home almost. I recognize some of the pictures. Crewman Weiser was in the boat unit when I arrived in country. He was from Miami and he went by the name of Bud Weiser. He was the Snipe on IUWG1 35 as indicated in the picture, It was the fastest boat in the unit. Shortly after I arrived, a new LCPL (same as IUWG1 35) arrived at Cat Lo. I became the Snipe on IUWG1 52. Unfortunately for Bud Weiser, and IUWG1 35, new boats rule! I would very much like to hear from any of the gang from Cat Lo and The Hill from '69-'70 or before or after I was there.

Outstanding Website.... This is my first visit. You can change the tag under the MSO from possibly to it is! That is the Firm. I would imagine that the Firm made more than one trip to Vung Tau but during her 1965 deployment she anchored off Vung Tau and sent the motor whale boat in. Unfortunately, as I remember it, the motor whale boat ran aground. The C.O. at the time, LCDR. C.W.Roth, was not a happy camper. Always looking to exchange sea stories with old shipmates........

BTW, last name pronounced Neff and this has caused at least one old friend from finding me until recently. He'd been searching by wrong spelling for me whilst I spelled his name wrong also.
