Ahoy Shipmates!
I was on the YRBM-21 from 2/70 - 7-70 and worked with the
Supply Department as a SK3. I remember the good times as
well as the bad ones. The great times at the "Last Chance
Saloon." I've got several great pictures to add to your
collection of the YRBM-21 if you would like them.

Served as an SK2 from 1970-1971. Worked in the supply office requisitioning supplies to repair the PBR'S. Commanding Officer Mr. Fry, and Supply Office was Ensign Hillouse. Stood Junior Officer of the deck watches. Remember the constant smell of the Nuc-Mom factory off to our port side. Very little privacy racks very tight, as I remember 6 high. Concusion granades constantly going over the side. As I recall the YRBM-21 was approx. 180 feet long and approx. 50 ft. wide. I believe 5 decks Including the flight deck which included 2 huey gun ships. We housed approx. 300 men including the vietnamese. I remember about the second week I got there we were watching a movie on the mess deck when a vietnamese stormed into the mess hall with a granade and started to pull the pin. Probably some sailor pissed him off that day. These guys were small , but very hot tempered. On of the sailors standing near him,and the granade and got him out of the mess deck. I said to myself , this is going to be a long year. Does anyone rember this incident approx. August 1970. I remember barges tied up along side of the 21 with the PBR'S tied up to them. I also remember our famous beer barge which was not too shabby. I also remember the cockroaches scurring accross the counter in the chow hall. I remember listening to Chriss Noel every day. I believe she lives with her husband not too far from where I live in Boyton Beach Fl. From what I understand Chriss is very active in veterans affairs. Things could have been much worse I'm sure. It wasn't a bad place to spend your year in Vietnam. Other guys would come to the 21 for in country R&R. I had to leave real suddenly after 8 months on the 21, as my father wa dying. The Red Cross got me home in 48 hours. I left in my greens and when I arrived at Kennedy airport I looked like a bum, and was called baby killer and was spat at. I met a bunch of great guys on the 21 and would do it again if I had to. Would sure like to hook up with anyone who served on the 21.

I was on the YRBM 16 until it got hit in november 1967. I was down below decks when it got hit. I was one of the luckey ones. That explosion haunts me today. I was one of the people that went back to fight the fire the next day. It took us about two days to put out the fire. I was known as seaman Courtright I drove mike boats. I saw the YRBM 16 again in 1969 when I went back for another tour as a mike boat driver stationed on the YRBM 21 from 9/1969 to 9/ 1970. I went on a boat run to the YRBM 16 while I was over there the second time but I could not go on board because of all of the bad memorys. The guilt has never gone away because 7 of our shipmates never made it back home. I hope to hear from any of my shipmates who were on the YRBM 16 or the YRBM 21.

ISDS was the swimmer zapper unit attached to the YRBM 21 for about 5 months. we were a top secret unit. So we all kept a very low profile. the night the 21 was hit with recoiles rockets we fired at the site of the firing before the helos scrapped the area with mini guns. I remember being hit with hot casings from the helos. that was one scary night.

Thanks to you guys I have found the beloved "LAST CHANCE" %#[ at ]$#%$&*^%$#[ at ] ;-)and the YRBM21 but there are still gaps like the name or number of the boat that was about 1/4 mile from the 21 going towards Tan Chau Army base. The same night the 21 got hit I remember hearing that 2 misiles were fired into the army base by mistake... Can anyone verify that? Lots of questions from me brothers!!! Peace and WELCOME HOME!
