I, too have many photos should you be interested. I also have some photos showing the Cobra recovery. My boat crew stood by that day at the "20". By the way, you're right, the food was better on the "20"!!

Served on the YRBM 16 July 69 - June 70 as an electrician. Although I was support it was still the most intense year of my life. Hitched rides on hueys, verried aircraft, and once traveled the canal on a minesweeper drone. I can't remember all the names of my crew mates but can picture their faces and the times. God we were young! Would enjoy email from anyone onboard during that period. Went back to Vietnam in January '95 and again in Feb. '97. Toured Hue, Danang, Hoi An, Nha Trang and Siagon. My wife and I are going again in April and will make it up to Chau Duc and Tan Chau. Thanks for the site what a pleasant surprise.

I need to corect my message I sent Monday. We were not on the Basac at the time of the fire on YRBM16 we were on the LST 838 anchored in the mouth of the river below the barge.
We had just spent about a week living on the barge while the T went to sea to resupply. I had left my cammera on the barge and when we entered the crews compartment fighting the fire I climbed up to the bunk where I had left the camera and recovered it.

Record 376 Found your site while looking up Navy Reunions. The detail on the bombing of YRBM 16 brought back a lot of memories as I was stationed aboard the USS Hunterdon County (LST-838) as an SM3. That Thanksgiving night 1967, I just went on the Mid watch on the bridge and shortly after midnight I heard the call for assistance to help the YRBM 16. We immidately went to General Quarters and made the transit up river on a ship that was 327' in almost pitch black darkness. We were all affraid that we were heading into an ambush but made it safely there to the scene to help put the fires out. If you were on board the Hunterdon County 1967-1968 Please feel free to e-mail me. NOTE TO WEBMASTER: PLease correct spelling of Hunterdon County in the YRBM 16 Article. I ran supplies up the French Canal to some of the remote Army bases in the Mike boat while stationed there. I rode the YRBM 16 out of the delta to Vung Tau where they were taking it for repairs. Unable to repair it in Vung Tau they hooked it to a fleet tug and towed it to Guam Naval Shipyard, via Subic Bay,Phillipines. After an extensive yard period where all the sides were replaced with new steel, it was towed back to Nha Be just outside of Saigon where it was turned over to the Vietnamese Navy. Record 1507 Everytime I take my boat out on the Mississippi River, I think of my tour aboard the YRBM-16 and what a crazy time that was. In one of my most recent recollections, I remembered back on one of my mike-boat watches, all three of us aboard the boat fell asleep at the same time. The officer of the deck had to fire several shots to wake us up before we hit the YRBM-16. As I cruise the Mississippi River, I remember the sampans and debri floating in the water, the smell of nokmon fermenting, and the constant sound of grenades. To this date, I have no desire to travel abroad, the good old USA is where I want to stay.

Record 1522 A number of things told by various people at this site don't exactly jibe with how it was before, during, and after the mining of the YRBM-16, but it was a long time ago. I was the ship repair officer at the time, and my repair crew fought the resulting fire with P-250s flown to us, along with Div 522 boats pumping foam through the propulsion pumps into the hole in the side. My crew recovered the PBR crewmen's remains, which were buried at sea, Read River. We fought the fire for about 27 hours before we got it under control and out. Pappy Flowers was my POIC of the engine room. I have thought of him many times and have been to the WALL to see his name.

Record 1761 I've not heard anyone mention "Irag". I think most Americans would like to see Saddam blown out of the water, however, I have mixed feelings on war . . . would this be another Vietnam where thousands of young men would loose their lives in vain or could we be effective in stopping terrorism throughout the world?

Record 1931 I WAS ASSIGNED TO SCRF(SMALL CRAFT REPAIR FACILITY)AT NSA DANANG IN JUNE 1970. THEN I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE YR71 ENGINE OVERHAUL SHOP IN SUPPORT OF PCF's. I WAS A EN2. THE PCF's HAD RECENTLY BEEN TURNED OVER TO THE VN's. YRBM16 WAS MOORED BEHIND THE YR71. WE LIVED AND WORKED ON BOTH. YR70 WAS MOORED NEXT TO YR71. I FULLY EXPECTED THAT I WOULD NOT SPEND A FULL YEAR IN-COUNTRY. THEN TO MY SURPRISE YR71 WAS TOWED TO VUNG TAU, WE WERE TOLD THAT WE WERE GOING TO CHAU DOC.YR70 AND YRBM16 STAYED IN DANANG. WE ENJOYED A WONDERFUL R&R FOR A MONTH IN VUNG TAU AND BREIFLY WAS AT CAT LO. THEN WE WERE TOWED TO BIHN THUEY AND SPENT 3 MONTHS THERE. PCF's STILL HAD AMERICAN CREWS AND WE WERE IN SUPPORT OF THEM. THEN WE WERE TOWED TO OUR FINAL DESTINATION NOT CHAU DOC BUT TAN CHAU. WE STILL SUPPORTED PCF's. THE YRBM20 WAS ALSO THERE IN SUPPORT OF PBR's. WE SPENT 6 MONTHS AT TAN CHAU. THE PCF's WERE FINALLY TURNED OVER TO THE VN's IN ABOUT APRIL OF 1971.AT THIS TIME THE VN's WERE JOINED WITH US AND WE TRAINED THEM TO TAKE OVER. IN MAY 1971 THE YRBM20 WAS SERIOUSLY HIT ONE NIGHT WITH RECOILLESS ROUNDS OF SOME KIND. IT DESTROYED A HUEY AND THERE WERE SOME WIA's AND KIA's. I LEFT IN JUNE 1971 AND THE YR71 WAS SUPPOSE TO COMPLETELY TURN OVER IN JULY.

We then moved to Ben Tre where I was lucky enough to be transfered to My Tuo about 4 days befor the Barge was bombed.
