Comments: Believe it or not I punched in Sea Float and up your page popped. Great pictures of my old stomping grounds. My Dad was an Air Farce FAC flying Birdogs at Rach Gia in 67-68 callsign "Bart" The 3rd time I was shot down was just a couple of miles southeast of there. I'll ask dad if he's familiar with the airplane propeller over door in one of your pictures. I refueled, rearmed and got snacks on a boat like yours when we were working in Cambodia 5/70. In the early fall of 70 while flying an OH6A Loach I landed at a BW Navy bunch of boats rafted on the river/border north of Ha Tein. I picked up a Ltjg and we scouted for guys in what looked like 16 foot fiberglass Tri hulls. They had MGs mounted in the bows. We didn't find anything but had fun shooting the place up. The Lt had been wounded in a leg during a VC attack the night before. I later dropped him off at the SF camp at B43. I have pretty good maps if you would like to see about where Sea Float was near Nam Can. WAR WAGON 14 Aeroscout D Troop 3/5 Cavalry Vinh Long 5/70-5/71

I served as lead radioman for the Naval Advisory Group at the ATSB Song Ong Doc for RivDiv 572 and its associated units. I was there from the begining in Sept'69 to Dec'69 and then again from March'70 to June'70. I made a few patrols with the boat crews and was in one daytime firefight on May 1st when our lead boat was beached from an "inattentive" helmsman. (Long story, dont ask). Anyway, I was there the night the coast guard cutter shelled the base and killed one of our boat captains and wounded most of the others. Does anyone know what ever became of Commander Roper and his yoeman we called "Cage" a young man from Lousiana? There was a radarman there that manned the radios in HQ at night while I sent out the daily TTY traffic. Living the good life in South Cal now. Surfing and designing cellular telephone chips. Mulitple marriages, couple of kids step-kids, spread all over the country not to mention planet. I have a son that broke with family tradtion and is a Marine Corporal. Found my old high school sweetheart a couple of years ago and now have grandkids to complete my story. I recently made a trip to The Wall in DC and left a note to Chief Mulrooney who was the first American casualty of Operation Breezy Cove. I served on one of the cutters (Pontchartrain)assigned to Gunfire Support for the ATSB at Song Ong Doc. Our cutter was not the one involved in that horrible friendly fire incident on 18 May of '70, but I still get sick thinking about it. We had been there from 17 April to 10 May. We ran a Medcap at the end of April, and I understand that the Petty Officer who was killed was the skipper of the boat that took us up river for that evolution. Pontchartrain returned to Song Ong Doc on the 26th of May. God Bless you guys......

4.0 web site.

How well I remember SEAFLOAT, 1969 - 1970.

I did a tour with the BietHi escorting the sand barges aboard SWIFT boats (no place to hide.)
If the world had a rectal orfice, it would definetly be in Nam Can Vietnam.

What I did for fun while I was there? I shot rats at night with my .38 S&W.

To All of you: "welcome to the world!"
To those that gave their lives for us to come home: " You will always be remembered, Thank You!"

I was an 'intelligence/combat' photographer, whatever that is, stationed with UDT-13 and spent a week or so on board the USS TERREL COUNTY prior to SEAFLOAT being built. While there, we had a few search and destroy operations, got ambushed a couple times and ate some good chow on board the TC. Our OIC was LT Bruce Dyer (retired as CAPT). The officer in charge of creating SEAFLOAT flew in one day while we were 'hiking' along the river bank with an eye out for local inhabitants with AK's and we gave him some protection from whatever as we checked out Old Nam Canh and some other places in that area. SEAL One had some guys hot bunking with us. MM1 Moki Martin, Solano, Gore, Farmer, and Dee Daigle were there. LT Tim Wettack was the SEAL OIC. They worked at night and we worked during the day. Prior to my arriving, PCF 43 got blown up on the river by a VC attack that ultimately set off all the demolitions on board. During the firefight, Doc Worthington the UDT Corpsman, the skipper of the boat LTJG Don Drosz, and the coxn of the PCF, QM3 Tom Holloway, were killed. Most of the UDT men and most of the boat's crew were wounded. As a result of this action, John Lowry of UDT-13 got the Silver Star. Art Ruiz and Mike Sandlin of UDT were wounded. Art went home for a while and later came back on active duty. Mike returned to duty after a bullet hole through his thigh healed. He's not back on active duty as a recruiter for the SEALs. (53 years old)

In the spring of 1970 we moved some boats [swifts] from seafloat to the mekong in support of an operation to cease arms movement out of Cambodia. Our boats were used for insetion of army [Green Berets I think] for making a sweep of an island that layed both in Camboadia and Nam and then stood off to give needed fire support. While holding off about 1/4 mi. reported to boat officer that small arms fire was coming from one of two houches [huts] on shore. This info was relayed to those in charge and was given orders to lay in 50cal fire on targets. Walked in 50cal onto houch #1 and it went up in ball of flames. One NVA tried to ecape to other houche and took him out. Ground ops captured number of arms in 2nd houche. I don't remember the name of this op, but we had support of Seawolf and Cobra gunships. Before or after this op we were policing river traffic coming out of Cambodia and the largest and highest Noahs arc like barge came down river. we determined to leave it alone and let it be searched by an other group [;.. When I find my slides I will post pixs of this craft and op

The pictures on this site of the aftermath of Oct 20 are the first I have seen. I hope to add some to the collection. I have some info to pass along. I got out of the Navy as soon as I returned and in 1986 I got to thinking I didn't get my medal version of my Vietnam Service ribbon. I wrote my Representative who forwarded it to the Dept of the Navy. I received a letter containing the medal and a Navy Unit Citation ribbon and the info that I also rated the Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. These were ribbons I never knew I rated. I'm guessing that there are lots of guys like me that don't know they rate awards. You should look into this. I just ordered a set of all my ribbons from Medals of America at Military.com. They were of good quality. E-mail me if you want to. I would like to hear from anyone for Nha Be or SOD.

The next year when UDT-13 came back again, I guess it was in place. I never saw it. We had one operation there before I got to Det Golf of UDT-13 where three U.S. Navy guys got shot. I came aboard Krishna after it came out of dry dock in Saigon. My experences on Krishna were formative to say the least. I grew up! I remenber working long hours on the barges patching up tangos and PBRs. I also remenber how the VN treated the boats after they were turned over, and how we spent countless hours replacing engines after they sold the oil and ran them back outto us dry. I would love to hear from shipmates who remenmber me during my time on Krishna.

I do remember the division being turned over and getting orders to go to the Riv Div 572 which was located 15 miles from the very bottom of the RVN. For each day since I have left Viet Nam, I can accurately say I have never missed one day where I have not thought about Viet Nam, Riv Div 572, my boatmates, the accommodations, the fire fights or the citizens of Viet Nam. MST 2, Det CHARLIE, was at SEA FLOAT/SOLID ANCHOR from May through November 1970. We had one HSSC, one MSSC, and two LSSC to support 3 SEAL platoons. We were there for the transition from a totally waterborne base to a shore base. One of my rememberances was when the USS Krishna (ARL-38) got mined (the hole was big enough to drive our LSSC through). I remember when USS Canon (PG-90) got ambushed (twice); the second time taking eight B-40s and 14 of 24 casualties. I remember when VNN LSSL-225 was mined and sunk. I remember when a batch of RAG boats was mined; at least one ATC sunk (maybe two) another ASPB afire and beached. I remember we had to drink distilled battery water because one of the VNN supply LSMs pumped diesel fuel into the 10,000 gallons of fresh water! I remember being surrounded by water, but none of it was potable. And I remember the gunfight a VC Lake between the NVA 95th Regiment and the SEALORDS, SEAWOLVES (HAL-3), Army COBRA gunships, and BLACK PONIES (VAL-4) on 15 September 1970. Now, THAT was a fight! SEA FLOAT/SOLID ANCHOR was an op area like no other -- always dangerous for the wary or unwary.

I walked the paths (can't really call them streets)of Song Ong Doc, Cai Nuoc, Quan Long and Camau City before any US Brown Water Navy got there. The Vietnamese Navy RAG boat provided the bulk of our transportation. The Navy Intelligence Laison Officer (NILO)and I frequently hitched rides on night patrols in central An Xuyen Provence. On my visit to Song Ong Doc town, there was a single company of RF and perhaps 2 platoons of PF to defend the area. There was a 5 member district advisory team assigned there. The original SOD naval facility appears to have been built a very short distance from their compound. It is fun to find the varity of recollections in your web site and to see what happened in An Xuyen Province after I left there, including the dramatic excape from the VC by Nick Rowe.

Any help from former UDT/SEAL team members as well as any LDNN advisors would be greatly appreciated. Any of you guys remember the SEAL Team One "Hero Locker"? Moved to Pinehurst, where Admiral Zumwalt had retired, and got to know him quite well. Even nicer in person. His son Elmo and I became friends, and the Admiral always blamed Agent Orange for the cancer that killed him. Love to reconnect with Sutter County folks. Great website. Thanks.

I was Crew Chief on Warrior 11 for a time and flew several missions with Seals off the Sea Float. Does anybody remember a Seal named Bob Sparks who was in country about the same time as I (69-70), or possibly earlier. Apparently I just missed seeing him over there and later learned scuba diving from him at UMass, Amherst in 1972..small world. Later learned that he was a Vermont native, and that is where I am living now. Great site...thanks guys...and Welcome Home!! Mike Sullivan

To those moronic imbeciles who seem to want to plaster all military sites with their spam. Enlist in the service of the United States and proseltyze the nations we are at war with. They need your mail and inane products. If you have nothing to contribute to this site, don't bother to post here. For all of those sick of this crap. Do what I have started to do. Send all the spam you get as a forwarded e-mail from an account you are never going to use and give them a taste of their own bullshit.
