Hi Kent:
Again Welcome Home!
As the Corpsman at Rach-Soi, I am looking for anyone who was also stationed there.
Especially if they were there in 1970.
I am trying to find Gary Weiss, at Rach Soi, in 1970
Great Job on your page, as soon I finish learning Photoshop, I have to re-do my page,
and get up my pictures from Rach Soi, and Rach Gia.
Thanks

Second time I've gone through your pix and stories. Thought I signed a guest book about a year ago.
I used to fly into Rach Gia during 1968. Who can ever forget buzzing the guards so they could lower the gates to block road traffic so we could land.
I was the senior engineer advisor to the 21st Infantry Division, located in Bac Lieu. I actually worked mostly with the 21st Infantry Division Engineer Battalion, which was stationed in Soc Trang.
Never knew you guys were there, near Rach Gia! Some coordination, huh?
Spent many days in your area. We were responsible for the lower six provinces, and I spent time in Rach Gia, Can Tho, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Cha La, and down into the UMinh Forest.
Was in country, 17 Jan 68 - 9 Jan 69.
As before, your pix of Rach Gia bring back old memories.
The "Brown Water Navy" is a marvelous piece of work!

Hello Kent and All,
I was at the small Vietnamese Naval Base at Rach Soi in December '68 and January '69 onboard T-152-1. Our boat and T-152-10 were cut from our Division and sent there.
I returned to Rach Soi/Rach Gia in '94 and visited a village that we used to beach at during the war. I had one photo with "kids" in it and the Vietnamese I.D.'d all 4 of them. That made me determined to return once again with ALL of my "kid" photos. I did so from Jan. 26-30 of this year ('99).
Have many memories, maps, photos, etc. from then and now. If anyone would like to correspond then feel free to do so at the email address above or at this address: 2196 N. 14th St., Coos Bay, Or 97420 Ph: 541-267-4755.

I really enjoyed your site, I was also in the Brownwater Navy. Stationed at Binh Thuy in the 1st DIV.(70-71) operating
Mike 8 and Mike 6 boats. We made regular trips to Rach Soi, Chou Doc,Dong Tam, and alot of places I can't remember the names of.
Spent three months at ATSB Moc Hoa on the Cambodian border( that was a trip).I hadn't thought of these places in 25 or so year.
I remember going to, I think it was Rach Soi and catching a ride into Rach Gia, anyway whereever it was there was five or so sailors
and we couldnot get a ride back so we decided to walk. It was around midnight, we started walking and I remember coming
to a bridge and there was an old papa son on guard duty and he tried to get us to go back, we continued to walk.
Anyway, small arms fire started up and we hit the side of the road. When I looked up I was laying on a grave
staring at a tombstone, scared to death, I thought what a place to die.ha No one was hurt and we made it back.
Thinking back on the situation it may have been papason having alittle fun.

Was first stationed at Tan An (Sept.'69). Remember the inspections and the strip shows, boys?
River Division 573, worked it's way West. If I remember things right, we lived on the floating barracks/supply ship, at Tra Cu, on the Vam Co Tey river, it was called the "Apple". Smoked a lot of "Can Sa" on that barge.
We then got orders to go to Rach Gia, the advanced base there was called Rach Soi. Those orders scared the crap out of us because there was a lot of NVA activity due to the fact that it was so close to the Cambodian border, we were used to dealing with VC.
I spent a lot of time on the canals in night ambush, just 3 clicks from a NVA Prisoner of War camp. We had one incident of NVA troops trying to cross the border, they had been driven out of the nearby mountains by B-52's, I still remember the rumbling. When the fire-fight was over we went out into the field to get the body count. Any one out there remember any of this? Contact me?
I am pictured on Kent's Web site sitting on the bow of my boat, relaxing, playing the guitar with a couple of friends during some down time.

Record 1588 I happened on to this site and found photos of Rac Soi and it takes me back. I came there in August of 70 and left in sept 71. I didn't remember alot of these but some will never be forgotten like the PBR's at the dock and the bunk house. Althought our division slept in a hooch at the end of the sea wal from the boats, near the fence across the road from the shell station, if I remember right.

Record 1611 I left CosDiv 11 just before SeaFloat and Solid Anchor were set up. CosDiv 11 was a coastal division until about November of 68. Then we suited up in Tiger Greens and tried to take on "Charlie" on his home truf. I can remember Ha Tien, Rach Gia, the Cau Lon, the Bassac, Old Nam Can, Song Ong Doc and the wonderful high banks of the Vinh Te where it cuts northwest along the border. Running those rivers in Swift Boats sure was interesting(?). Not much protection in the Swifts against "in coming". Was glad to leave there and let the guys in the River Divisions with the PBRs and the other Riverine Warfare boats take over those nasty day and night patrols. Hated night patrols and ambushes. At times couldn't see anything except the boat's wake. "Charlie" got real good at sighting in on that. Plus our boats weren't as quiet as some of gthe RivDiv boats. You got a great site here. I'll be back for more trips down memory lane

Record 1783 As helmsman(RD3) of PCF-38 I was part of the first 3 swifts to transit (Bernique's Creek) Vinh Te canal to the Bassac. Then down river to Rocket Alley which we transited to Rach Gia. Then Rach Gia via canal(with horse shoe in it)north to Ha Tien and back to salt water. All the fireworks was at the first big bend east of Ha Tien. The officers were all called to Saigon to tell our version of the 100's of innocent Cambodians and children (8 VC Kia's) we did in. Not a shot was fired by us the rest of the three days(except for a few large birds that flushed at the wrong time). Remember watching the bullets splashing toward us in the water as we went down the Bassac and weren't allow to fire back(friendly village)was unforgetable. Everywhere from HaTien south was a free fire zone(except a couple of green beret outposts) so that(Bassac) was disturbing to us.The three days was very nerve-wracking but actually far less damaging to us as were other places/days/patrols. Got wounded off Nam Can in March 69 and eventually got lost in the navy hospital paperwork and ended up on a destroyer out of Mayport,FL. Many other hairy raids fit in between the first trip east to the Bassac and my last raid near Nam Can in March 69. You've got a great site here. THANK YOU.

Record 1995 As a unit of the Naval Special Warfare Group, our Beach Jumper Team 13 of 6-8 personnel moved about often on various specops assignments. We reported to COMNAVFORV but made home base where ever we landed. I had the privilege of working with the Brown Water Navy on many occassions in different locations in IV Corps, from Parrot's Beak, to Mekong River, on Vinh Te canal, to Rach Gia and Ha Tien. Really enjoyed the open and friendly hospitatily where ever we went and the tough professionalism of the sailors that went with the ride-into-harm's-way. Am enjoying the many photos of places and craft that bring back some special memories. Will visit again.

Record 2057 Was Province Senior Advisor in Kien Giang in 63/64. Had 3rd Brigade 4th division in Plieku (Oasis) in 69.
Thanx for the memories raised by glimses along the streets in Rach Gia. Even thought I could remember what the Teamhouse looked like. We were supported by a great Riverine Force Lt whose face is clear but name is not.
You do us all a great sevice by your substantial effort to keep the past alive among those who served!
