Comments: Great Web Page. I was In-country July66 to Dec67. I rode PBR's out of Cat Lo for abuot 3 months. After Roy Castleberry another ET that I also went to 'A'school with got killed, the Navy pulled all ETs of the boats. I got sent to COMNAVFORV headquaters in Saigon. Worked out of the ET/RM shop. Spent a lot of time TAD to bases and ships in the Delta and Nhe Be working on radars. I'd like to hear from George Crouch, Jimmy Harmon, or anyone else that I might have served with.

Comments: Great job on this web page. I served on USS TUTUILA (ARG-4), first in An Thoi and then in Nha Be, 1970. The photo of the Annapolis really brought back memories. Processed through the Annapolis in spring 1970 but never did get a pic of it; bought my Pentax after I got to the "Toot." Will pass this link on to a couple of buddies I'm still in touch with. Gentlemen, My name is Mark Nolan. When I was 15, in January, 1969, my brother Michael was killed in Nha Be, Vietman. He was a proud member of the Seabees. He was also my hero. I admired his ability to play the drums and his athletic prowess as a track and field and football star. He was a very fine young man, as anyone who knew him will attest. I guess the reason I'm writing this is to point out two things: 1 - Not a day goes by that I don't think of Mike. 2 - I'm proud of every man and woman who served in Vietnam, and just want you people to know it. First time entering your website. It's been great and fascinating. Have been cut off from that part of my life, but excited it can be revisited especially remembering the good times, which were many. Was a fifty cal./twenty MM gunner and part time coxswain/radioman/engineman/medic etc. {weren't we all?}on Tango 111-13 originally out of Dong Tam. Remember "Rocket Alley", "The Four Corners", "Route 66"? Toured the Mekong Delta remembering My Tho, Tre Cu,and I think Tuey Nahn. Lots of operations on the Vam Co Tay, Vam Co Dong, Saigon River, etc. Spent a month on a canal paralelling the Cambodian border I think up in the Parrots Beak area. My comrades and I left Nha Be on a fire and rescue boat for the scene,and sucessfully patched aqnd refloated MSB-49 and towed it back to NHA BE.Would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. I arived at Nha Be very soon after the first tent was put upin '66, while the sand was still being pumped off the bottom of the river. Did most anything the CO wanted and mainly did PBR repairs at night. Finished up my tour as a boat engineer for the SEAL TEAM'S mike boat up to the day it was struck by a mortar. If anyone remembers me please write. I would very much like to hear from any of the team that were aboard on that day. I was aboard for the med-evac and the air strike afterwards but have no knowledge of how the many wounded made out. If anyone can fill me in please contact me. I remember all the faces but can only remember two names: Commander Mac and an Engineman Chief, I believe his last name was Ruth. I think the Base CO's name was LT. Bayer. Did a 1 year tour in Naval Security in Danang, but had to give PBR's a try. I heard it was pretty exciting duty, and it damn sure was! I was with Riv.Sec 543 March to Sept. in Nha Be, was with 535 in Can Tho Sept. to March '68. Scott Delph (PBR 750) was my boat captain. Marc Cline and Tom Craghead were my best buds. It took 33 years, but I finally got the full story on PBR 750 thanks to this wonderful site. God Bless everyone who served.

I was on the YRBM 20 from Feb '71 until the 20 was towed to Long Pier in April '71. Most of the crew was released with undated orders and were suppose to be on their honor to report to Annapolis in three days. C.W.Bell and I got our orders stamped in Nha Be (by the same yeoman from the YRBM 20 that left the date off) and didn't reported in until we got orders for our next duty station, ten days later. We lived at the Vic' and in that short time learned how to make money selling non-rationed items like candy, soap and tissue paper from the well stocked Cholon PX. From that point on I never spent my paychecks but managed to stay at the Vic' so often the people at the front desk kept room 701 reserved for me the entire year I was in-country. By the way; the terrace of the Vic' that's on this web sight says it's on the 13th floor. For your information, I have a booklet I saved from the hotel that says the terrace was on the 9th floor.
From there I went to the YW 126 and Bell went to the YF 866. On the YW, we spent most of the time tied up at Cat Lo skiing, drinking beer, shooting the .45 at empty beer cans in the water and watching movies. We had three mama-sans cooking and cleaning the YW until we got caught of the coast of Vung Tau with them onboard. The Craftmaster got sent to another boat and we got an Admirals inspection. Everything turned out OK because the Admiral knew the women were there just to clean and since they had worked on the Cat Lo base before they were hired to work on the YW, we all got off with an ass-chewing and a new Craftmaster that turned out to be a good guy - Chief Dixon. We then went back to parting everyday at Cat Lo or Vung Tau; except when our screw fell off and we spent six weeks at the Port of Saigon in dry dock. I spent about two thousand dollars at the Vic' during that time on the room, a girl, parting around town, food and consa. I have many great memories of Saigon but have yet to see other vet's talk about the "fun" stuff. Like the USO show on the YRBM just before it got towed to Long Pier that featured the big breasted girl that did a striptease and more, kicking back in the nets around the flight deck of the YRBM while getting a buzz and watching the helo's shooting tracers at VC all night and all the other cool stuff people don't want their relatives to know about.
The YW was more like "McHale's Navy" with our laid back lifestyle and constant focus on liberty call. I had a unique tour; my brother was wounded six weeks after arriving in-country and is still disabled so I appreciate my good fortune. You have a great web site. Thanks for your hard work. While looking up information on Agent Orange, I came upon several swift boat,Riverine, and Brownwater Navy sites. My father was Capt.Bill Diffley and he was the CO at Nha Be in (I believe) 1969 and part of 1970... I remember how he worried if the boats were late getting back...He died in 1991 of AML, acute myelogenous leukemia, and now they are saying that there is a possible link to that and agent orange..... Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew my daddy....I have some of his pictures from Nha Be and will try to get them out....unfortunately he was NOT a good photographer!!! Hi, My name is Joyce Snodgrass and my husband was stationed in Vietnam from April 1970 thru April 1971. He was an advisor on River Patrol Boats. He was stationed in Nah Be and Binh Thuy. His name was EN/2 Ronald D. Snodgrass (Snotty) from Texas. If I understand this right he was Petty Officer in Charge of Commander Task Force 212 Mobile Maintenance Advisor Team and later served as an advisor to Vietnamese Navy RPD-57. I got this information from his citation for his Navy Commendation Metal. I am trying to find out information about his group and to try and locate anyone who may have served with him. Is there any archives for his Task Force and Group. Ronnie died of Agent Orange related cancer on Dec. 1, 1997. My two son's, one who was in the Navy and one who is currently serving as a field medic in the Navy (Stationed with the 1st Marines) would love to have this information. Even though I have visited your sight many times, I am still trying to find more information about my brother (Charles "Charlie" P. Geisert) who was kia on 11-4-69.One of the men on Charlies boat told me they were ambushed in the French Canal. Another of the men on his boat said they were attacked right in front of a Vietnamese Army Camp on the French Canal. Now, Charlie was the Captain of MSR-7, & that was a part of his mailing address as was Mine Div. 113. However, there is a picture of a boat wrecked in front of the Army camp, but I understand that was the MSR-7 also. The Captain of that boat was Charlie Brown. No one was hurt on that boat as they all walked away. Not so in my brother's attack. Everyone was hurt, but my brother and an interpreter were the only men killed. I would love to locate this Charlie Brown that was on the MSR-7. I know he is out there somewhere as I have had two different men to tell me they knew him. In 1967 I was Deck Division Officer on the Tioga County. We took a load of Marines, tanks and jeeps to Vietnam,& were mother ship to PBR's. I made 220 combat patrols with Riv Div 571 as patrol officer and XO. I did not try to be a hero and took no chances that were unnecessary. We engaged the enemy 22 times. With God's help I brought back every man alive on every patrol with only 3 minor injuries. I want to thank Chief Shawlin for teaching me about setting ambushes along streams and canals. I also want to thank the Seawolf helicopter crews for their brave gunfire support. I also want to thank the crews on my boats for their bravery under dangerous conditions. Arrived Nha Be early April 68. Was heavy equipment operator and operated the crane that lifted out many damaged boats. Also drove the 18 wheeler that brought all supplies, ammo, food, and beer that got into Nha Be for about 7 months. Lots of close calls on the road but was too young and dumb to realize how God cared for me. I got rush orders to Danang and my replacement (Earl Leighton EO2) was killed shortly after when the 500 lb. mine exploded. Mike Nolan CE2 was also killed and close friend Bruce Lindhorst UT2 was seriously injured. I have quite a few pictures and slides of Nha Be and will share them with anyone interested. Other Seabees at Nha Be at the time was Joe Sweat BU,John Thorne EO2 ,Gosnell EO,Mechanics from Los Gatos, Ca. and Billy Sherill from Indianapolis. Minnetello was a steelworker and I can not remember the names of the other Seabees off the top of my head. We assembled the crane on the Mobile Support Base II and have pics and a news clipping about it. I would like to hear from anyone that can refresh some of the old memories. Was stationed at Nha Be 66-67 MSB Detachment Alpha. We were the first group activated at Nha Be and had to establish the base for Minesweepers. Total number of boats was about 12. During the first 8 months of operations, we had quite a few casualities. I was originally trained at Long Beach, Ca. to be in support, but due to battle injuries of the EM2 on boat #15, I was assigned to complete the remaining 11 months aboard her. The boat ( 52 feet ) had a complement of 6 crewmen. I remember the skippers name ( John Milum BM1 ) but can't recall the other fellows. Hopefully you guys read this and get in contact. Would you beleive, i've been searching for years to find a site where MSB sailors could tell their stories. We have quite a few to tell...for instance...how about that EM2 aboard boat #52 that was hit with 2-3 rockets smack on the pilot house and lived!! the pilot house was GONE. All he had on was his BOOTS while still holding on to what was left of the wooden helm.

Like to here from Nah Be Sailors. The first night I arrived the base was hit. I though to myself no one person is ever going to scare me again. That ended the next day when I asked about who were those guys down below. SEALS came the answer. Whats a SEAL I replied? Frogmen. Well it did not take long to find out. Lots of action took place on the base, in town, and on the rivers. All kinds of sailors doing different things that my two years in the navy never could imagine a sailor doing. Proud of all of you guys and hope to hear from you.

We were the first group from Minron 11 to go to Nha Be. I was 19 yrs. old and the first trip down the Long Tau was pretty scary, but before long we even went water skiing out there. Watched the Eastern Mariner sink at Nha Be after being exploded by the V.C. Our boat, MSB 16, was one of the first on scene at the Baton Rouge Victory after it was mined and beached.Heintz(not sure of spelling) and Underwood paid with their lives; close friend Rod Rickley paid with his life after I was stateside. Spent 2 yrs. on the Epping Forest 67-68, made a few trips down to Vietnam. Because of the lack of rated boatswains mates they let me run an MSL for a while as a seaman. Epping Forest went through a typhoon on the way to Yokosuka that nearly did her in. An African American boatswain mate named White led a crew of volunteers into after steering, a potential death trap, and drained water away from steering telemotors saving the day. Hats off to you Mr. White. If any of this information sounds familiar get in touch.

I was stationed at Nha Be from October 1969 until May 1970. I was then reassigned to ATSB Song Ong Doc as Leading Radioman. I remained at Song Ong Doc until the first of October 1970. I was there for the September 1970 VC Lake action, but left just before the base was destroyed in October 1970. I was an RM2 and worked in the NOC. I slept in "The Swamp" and for 5 months almost never ate in the mess hooch. I could only handle scrambled eggs and mosquitos on one month intervals.

I was an RM2 watch section supervisor at the communication station in Nha Be and then went to Song Ong Doc as lead radioman relieving Dennis Walker who has also checked into this site. I spent almost 5 months at SOD and went back to civilization Oct 5, 1970. I've thought a lot about missing the attack on Oct 20 and being there for the incident at VC Lake. The pictures on this site of the aftermath of Oct 20 are the first I have seen. I hope to add some to the collection. I have some info to pass along. I got out of the Navy as soon as I returned and in 1986 I got to thinking I didn't get my medal version of my Vietnam Service ribbon. I wrote my Representative who forwarded it to the Dept of the Navy. I received a letter containing the medal and a Navy Unit Citation ribbon and the info that I also rated the Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. These were ribbons I never knew I rated. I'm guessing that there are lots of guys like me that don't know they rate awards. You should look into this. I just ordered a set of all my ribbons from Medals of America at Military.com. They were of good quality. E-mail me if you want to. I would like to hear from anyone for Nha Be or SOD.

HI all brown water sailors, I was a doorgunner with HA(L)-3 Navy Seawolves, stationed at Vung Tau and Nha Be from 3/68-3/69. You guys have a great website here. All the great pictures bring back a lot of memories. We flew air cover for the PBRs, etc a lot. I was in on a rescue of 2 wounded off a PBR where our pilot hovered our ship on the bow of the boat and took off the two wounded sailors. I am told they both survived. Welcome home!!! I was in River Section 542 in Nha Be May 1967 - May 1968. I Was first stationd on the Jennings County then the unit was transferred to Nha Be. We patrolled the Song Nha Be River from Vung Tau to Saigon. I think I can safely say any one who was on the river will never forget that experience and always appreciated having the helos close by at Nha Be when we needed help. The tank farm at Nha Be was always nice to have with their 155's ready at a moments notice.

I served on the YRBM 16 from about February 1970 until they turned it over to the Vietnamese Navy in Nha Be in about July or August 1971. I ran supplies up the French Canal to some of the remote Army bases in the Mike boat while stationed there. I rode the YRBM 16 out of the delta to Vung Tau where they were taking it for repairs. Unable to repair it in Vung Tau they hooked it to a fleet tug and towed it to Guam Naval Shipyard, via Subic Bay,Phillipines. After an extensive yard period where all the sides were replaced with new steel, it was towed back to Nha Be just outside of Saigon where it was turned over to the Vietnamese Navy. Serving my country on the "Delta Queen" was an honor.

I was the last of Mine Division 113. MSR7 and the MSDs were all shipped back to Long Beach in July 1971. Even though all the "U.S. Naval activities have been turned over to the VNN" as the headlines said on 12/30/70, we were dowm in the U Minh Forest sweeping the Cai Long Canal (Mine Alley) until May 1971. I have the flag that was flying on MSR7 when it was shipped back. I have also sent many pictures to Kent for him to use as he sees fit. If anyone knows who some of the guys are in the photos please let him know. I would also like to hear from you.

I had been on the USS Alamo LSD-33,up around DaNang, when I got orders for Mine Div 113, went states side for the training and ended up learning how to drive a river boat, not bad for a Gunners Mate 3rd. Flew into Saigon like everybody else, and hopped a ride to Nha Be, We worked on our ORE stuff for awhile, watched a big ship sink off the pier from a mine of some sort. Then we pulled up stakes and moved up/down river to the Mekong. USS Askari, then a couple of YRBMs, lots of time checking out sampans and setting out in the middle of the river playing cards and taking pictures. Then we went up/down river to Ha Tien, where we patrol the river (I forgot the name) that comes out of Cambodia. That is where I got my Purple Heart and Bronze Star, catching shrapnel in the leg and helping out the crew that were worse off than I was. By the way it was on Friday the 13th. We were there for sometime 3 or 4 months then back to the Mekong in May one our way to Nha Be, where we were doing the Vietnamization of our boats to the ARVN's. All in all not to bad, however it is growing dimmer and dimmer on the small details. We did work with the little speed boats with the remote control and chain bottom drag, which I remember. Funny I cant remember my own boat capt. though. I do remember an EN from Xenia, Oh but not his name There was Hemphill, I think from Ca, a Wilcox that got pretty shot up and had to go stateside, I had a friend on the boat that got sunk, I think if was MSR #7, In fact he lives here in the same town I do, Rulon Young is his name. I will try and get some pictures out for all to see if there is anymore interest. Great site for all us River Rats. Have a good one.

Did volunteer to go back, but was refused. Have a ton of photographs of the base, including the remains of two helos that collided and crashed. If interested I will send them along. I was a plank owner with 535, having been transfered from 543 at Nha Be to be part of the original crew of the Mark II boats in October of 67. We lost 2 boats in Chau Doc (1 KIA ? WIA) during TET of 68 and another boat in May 68 (3 KIA) on the Bassac River. One of the boats (Hull #727) that we lost in Chau Doc was back in commission after a salvage crew was able to bring it back to the surface...those guys were great. As for the boat we lost in May of 68...there is some absolute BS about Patrick Ford that is listed within this site...I KNOW...I was on his cover boat and I WAS THERE.. I have film that can prove it. A very stupid Lt by the name of William Dennis caused the life of himself and 2 other sailors.... you want details, just em me I WAS THERE

Movies, newsclips from the 6 o'clock TV news, photos on patrol, newspaper clippings, printed ephemera, patches, letters home, diaries, I'm still carrying around a lot of baggage. Also the addresses of Tommy Crowson, Ferren Simms, Ken Carlson and Tony Bragg. It still hurts to reflect on those days, but if any B-Boater sends in a call you know there's only one response. After a year of sea duty on the USS Banner (AGER-1) out of Yokosuka, Japan, I went to dive school in Subic Bay, came out a 2nd Class Diver and was sent to Cam Ranh Bay as the base diver at the repair facility. After a few months, and about 150 dives I was sent to Nha Be as a Mike boat captain running supplies and ammo up the Vam Co Tay and Vam Co Dong Rivers to the advanced tactical support bases in such exotic places as Go Dau Ha, Moc Hoa, Tay Ninh, and up to the Cambodian border. Also was part of the ill fated Operation Giant Slingshot. Life on the river truly was one of the defining times of my life, as I learned to sleep in the rain, eat c-rations, shoot back at whomever was shooting at us, and generally become a much more aware human being. Sometimes the river was the most peaceful, tranquil, natural spot in the universe. So natural, so unlike civilization. But at other times it became a loud, dangerous, blazing inferno. Everything happening at breakneck speed, but seemingly in visual slow motion. Truthfully, I wouldn't have traded that year for any other year in my life. The excitement, or rather the expectation of excitement was addicting, as well as what I learned about myself during that year. Thanks for the opportunity, and this is truly a great site.

Brought the new converted LCM 6's to Nha Bhe in 1968. Operated on the river trolling for mines until we were sent to Ben Luc where we operated until sent home in '69. Have not seen or heard from any mates since I was discharged. I am looking for patch of the division, my seabag never made in home with me. Initially slept in the barracks at Nhe Bhe on second floor. There was a seal team housed on the first floor. A great bunch of guys, crazy but a helluva crew.

Out of Saigon I went all over II,III,IV Corps to inspect my Seabee crews at all of the Navy bases.My Seabees built an Ammi-pontoon drydock in Dong Tam without the instructions!!When it would not sink I had to calculate how much ballast it would take to sink it.After adding water to two mid.end tanks it worked!!!Later I got the directions!!!I went by truck,Helo,or plane to all the bases.Before The Big TET offensive the mil.could not carry weapons except when we went outside Saigon!!That soon changed when the mil. could not defend themselves!!They realized we were in a war!!Luckily I and a det.of Seabees were sent to Nha Be to show that the Navy was moving out of Saigon!!We took care of bldgs, docks, boat-ramps,drinking water,power,plumbing etc.(http://)

Kent, I was totally surprised and impressed at all the work that has been put into this website. Congratulations! I have hundreds of photos taken during my tour aboard the 20. At the moment, all my slides are packed and stored. In the near future I will dig them out and begin scanning all my slides to disc. One event which I captured on film was the infamous "Soccer" match between the YRBM 20 gang and the town of Chau Doc. Does anyone remember the second match? Graduated from NIOTC Class 13-69, arrived at Nha Be in Jan 70. Was assinged as a crewman on A-44 (GMG1 Jervis) for a couple of weeks...later assigned to A-58 (GMG2 Jack Kitchura's boat). Around halfway through my tour, was transferred to RAD 152 and hooked up with the boat and crew at Da Nang. T-6 was BM1 Getty's boat, and we traveled south to Song Ong Doc. After leaving the Navy in Jan 1973, I went to college on GI Bill, entered Army ROTC and I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in July 1999. I look back on my time as a River Rat as possibly the finest period of my military career. Oh yeah, anyone else remember "Nobber Lil's" place in beautiful, downtown Nha Be?

Note: My time on T-6 was in RAD 152 vice 153. Obviously, there were only A boats in RAD 153 aka "The Delta Destroyers".

I signed in once before but my e-mail has changed. My dad was CO of the base in 69 and 70. He died of acute myelogenous leukemia, and we have wondered about the Agent Orange connection. He died in 91 and was told at the time that there was no connection. I wonder. Wonderful website. We lived in Subic Bay 62-64, and I remember my dad's ship having to leave port suddenly, during the first week of my senior year in high school in Subic. I don't know exactly where they went but it was "Viet Nam" related.

Thanks to you guys I have found the beloved "LAST CHANCE" %#[ at ]$#%$&*^%$#[ at ] ;-)and the YRBM21 but there are still gaps like the name or number of the boat that was about 1/4 mile from the 21 going towards Tan Chau Army base. Worked in the Machine Shop fixin' just about everything from Jacuzzi Pump shafts on PBRs to making brass M-60 gun mounts. Spent many a fine hours crusing the river on a 17 foot Boston Whaler, Whiskey Foxtrot, keeping the drunken Papa Sons under control in their sampans after hours on the river. High point was water sking on the other side of the island, right off the Nha Be point, with the Seal Teams and drinking home made rice wine with the locals waiting our turn behind the STAB boats.Only R and R I took while over there except for a month excursion into Saigon on the mail truck riding "Shotgun".

I was on the 889 after it was towed from Guam in 1967. I can not remember the Skipper's name, but he was an Old crusty BM1, had an American eagle on his back. Served on the ship from around June 67 until Jan 68 when I was sent to Saigon to work with MACV Navy Disbursing as a DK3. Have been trying to get pictures of YFR 889 or 890 and have not been able to find any. We were originally docked at Nhe Be while the PPRs arrived and the first contingent of Seal Team 1 arrived. Then started ferrying goods up river to My Tho and Dong Tam to start. Then in later months we went as far as Ving Long. Thought I would drop you this line just to see if you remembered anyone from that period. Welcome home and thanks for your service to your country. God Bless

I was the leading ET on YRBM-20 from mid May '69 to late April or early May '70. I was assigned to YRBM-20 from the main ET shop at NSA Nha Be. I reported to CWO Johnson, a warrant engineer (MM?). I had four other guys working for me, two whose names I remember are ET3 Tom Swackhammer (Ohio), and ET3 Ed? Rankin (Bakersfield). Memory fails regarding the names of the others. I remember an RM (Radioman) from Jett, Oklahoma; I also remember that the ENs "blueprinted" a 6V53 for a PBR, they did it so well, they had to do another so the boat would be evenly powered. I joined the 20 when it was on the Mekong, left it in '70 while it was anchored downriver of the YRBM-16 at Chau Duc. I retired as a CWO3 Elec Tech in Sept '95 after having advanced to EWCS (E-8) in '85 and CWO2 in '89. Great site! Many memories awakened. Fair winds and following seas to all my fellow shippies of YRBM-20.

A childhood friend of mine, Jerry W. Kirkendoll, Army WO1-117th AHC at Long Binh,was kia 3/15/71, when he left from Plantation about 07:30 to take passengers to Hotel-3 at Nha Be. Upon return takeoff, 68-15411's transmission failed and crashed into a ditch there. All on board were kia. If anyone knew Jerry or has a photo of him, it would mean a lot to me to hear from you. God bless all of you for all you did over there. Even though the sentiment seemed unfavorable at the time, there were many of us who didn't get on that bandwagon, and we silently prayed for your safe return home. YOU are the best of the best.

2 boat patrol call signs were "Shark 81", and " Shark 82". Some of my crew mates were: Dennis Leaver, Bill Schlutz, and Ron Hall. We always envied the fastest boat, so every boat crew in the Section, worked hard to improve their boat's performance. We used to race each other back off patrol. I remember one time, we had the fastest boat, after a lot of tinkering. Another crew had to borrow our boat for a night patrol, because theirs was down for repairs. When they returned in the morning, we were waiting on the pier, to take back possession of our " fastest " boat, and get it ready and re-fueled for a day patrol. The tide was runnnig fast toward the pier, and the crew who had borrowed our boat, didn't start backing the engines down soon enough. Well, you KNOW what happened next. They hit the pier, and our boat was severely damaged. Steel piers and fiberglass don't like each other. We were not happy campers. On another note, thank God, I came home, went to college under the GI Bill, got married, and had kids,who in turn, gave us grandchildren. I often think of those I trained and served with, who paid the supreme price, and never had the chance to live a full life. God bless them, and may we never forget their sacrifice
