Comments: I came here from Linda's site "Mom's Vietnam Vet Message Board and Buddy Search", from her VN Vet's Links. I am really disappointed that you didn't include the Airboats of A-404 of the IV Corps Mike Force!!:>) On a more serious note, I have pictures of the Vinh Te Canal about the same time, it seems the water was alittle higher in my picture of the Minesweeper, and the mountain in the picture was, as I remember, on the left as you were going toward Tinh Bien; so the mountain I am sure was Nui Giai. I worked with the PBR's during the dry season; they would take us (IV Corps Mike Force) up the canal to set up ambushs. I normally had about 30 Chinese or Cambodian troops with me, with me as the only American. Also; I know, I know, picky, picky, picky:>), it was Chau Doc!!! You will find some pictures on my pages of the Airboats, but I have at least a hundred I need to get scanned. Highest Regards, John (aka Shotgun Jack), IV Corps Mike Force, 5th Special Forces Group, The Mekong Delta, RSVN, Sep.'69-Nov.70.

Comments: Great site. Very familiar stuff. I was an Army fixed-wing pilot at Can Tho and knew the entire Mekong Delta very well. On Armed Forces Day, 1968 my roommate and I took a ride, for fun, on a PBR. (It sounded like a good idea at the time.) Boat was to pick us up off a floating dock at Can Tho, but the throttle jammed and it charged right up on top the float - chased us up the ladder. Despite that start, it was one of the most memorable days of my life. We went about thirty miles down the Bassac on a MEDCAP. Stopped at several villages. Took lots of pictures. Finally I wandered off alone, down a treeline taking pictures. A little girl tugged at my sleeve, pointed at some hootches about thirty yards away and said: "VC." So, I didn't take any more pictures. In fact I went back and stood by the twin fifties for a while.

Comments: I was an early participant in US Navy RVN operations as a crew member on 36' minesweeping boats of MinDiv 33 stationed in Sasebo, Japan. In 1964 (early summer) we carried First Force Recon Marines to Vietnam and spent several weeks making charts of Cam Ranh Bay, Nha Trang, and other potential ports, dropping the Marines ashore ahead of our charting efforts for security. We were moored aft of the Turner Joy and Maddox at the pier in Subic Bay (late July after returning from Vietnam)only to find out in the coming weeks these ships were principals in the Tonkin Gulf incident. Our ten boats were embarked on the USS Epping Forest MCS-7 (Mine Countermeasures Support ship, a WWII LSD! After this first trip to SVN, about every time we got underway we went to Vietnam and participated in Market Time coastal surveillance or other special operations. I was discharged in 1966 after a one year involuntary extension was rescinded for my rating (ETR3)after spending 31 months overseas, 25 months having collected Hostile Fire Pay for our coastal/river surveillance efforts in Vietnam. I served briefly on the USS Widgeon MSC-208 for a couple of months prior to discharge. MinDiv 33 and the MSC's were part of Mine Flotilla One in Sasebo. MinFlot 1 was commanded by Capt.A.M. Savage whose family owned Savage Arms Co. He had nice shotguns, and used to shoot skeet of the flight deck (helo pad) of the Epping Forest. I can recall some YFB's in Sasebo being fitted with helo pads and berthing spaces in 1966, did these end up being YRBM's? We were told these vessels were to be towed to SVN rivers as command platforms for riverine operations.

Since I'm an old Army guy ('72-75) and my novel involves the "Army's navy" in Vietnam, I wonder if you have any knowledge in that area or can direct me to people who do. There is literally ZIP written about it. Any leads could be helpful, even if it's just from memory. I knew some guys who ran parts of the Mekong in Army watercraft, but my memory is dim as to what they said. Thanks! Jim Allen

Great web page, especially the article on Flag Burning. My Father flew B-17's in WWII, B-29's in Korea, and B-52's in Viet Nam, I dare some flag burning ass-wipe to ask his permission to desecrate our flag. I was present during the fall of Saigon, standing off-shore aboard the Hewes taking on refugees flying out to us in anything that would fly, let them ask one of those people about burning the flag. Finally, let them ask me. Thanks for maintaining this site, I've always had an interest in the River Rats. You guys did a great job, thanks for your service and your sacrifice. I am reading a book about PBRs and the Brownwater Navy, "Papa Bravo Romeo", by Wynn Goldsmith. I was searching for some more info when I found your site. I am thoroughly pleased with your site. I knew what the PBRs were, but I had no idea what you did or to the extent of your task. I have enjoyed my reading about the Brownwater Nave and your site has caused a hunger for more information. I am now on a quest for all I cand find, Thank You.

I am a first cousin of Jack Elliot who was killed in Vietnam in the brown water navy in late 1968. I was in the army at the time and stationed at Nha Trang. I knew Jack was in country but never got to talk to him or see him over there. I, and the rest of our family, would like to hear from anyone who served with Jack over there. We would very much like to hear any memories, experiences and reminiscences of Jack that anyone has. Anything you can send me will be shared with his two survivng brothers and the rest of our extended family. Thank you very much.

I was a civilian working for the voluntary agency IVS in the Delta in 1967 and 68. During the early days of the Tet Offensive, I was taken from near Hong Ngu to Cao Lanh (Kien Phong prov.). I was supposed to be met by Prov. rep. at the ferry crossing. No one arrived and then small arms and artillery fire started up near the ferry. Vietnamse were disappearing and the price of Coca-Cola was escalating severely. I have never seen a more welcome sight than the Navy lifer ( and the PBR wth its resplendant American flag) motioning me to come with him. The PBR's crew heard I was stuck on the ferry landing and came back up the river more than 20 miles to get me. I have always wanted to thank again the guys who went way out of their way to make sure I was safe. I am currently an attorney for the City of Philadelphia. Thank you.
