Comments: I have had severe respiratory problems ever since my tour in Vietnam. I am trying to get "buddy" statements from fellow shipmate who served in the Mekong Delta. I was on board the USS Satyr, a repair ship, from 1969-1970. Can you send fellow shipmates a mass E-mail asking if other sailors have significant respiratory problems from their service? I would appreciate it. Im working with the VA and they want "buddy statements". Did you know that the fish in Vietnam contain parasites and are known for causing a condition called paragonisis? The symptoms are chronic cough and bleeding lungs. I spent the next 3 years after being in Vietnam with bleeding lungs and a severe chronic cough. Over time these conditions have progressed and I now have additional respiratory problems. As sailors we were also exposed as you know to other agents such as dioxin from the US Army Chemical Corps spraying missions, and herbicide spraying from the USAF. In additon some of us were exposed to asbestos when the WWII ships we served on were modified and asbestos was exposed during shipboard renovation projects. Can you help me by forwarding my E-mail to fellow sailors? Thanks. Ed Seafeldt (206) 283-7409 ma99ma[ at ]wa.freei.net

Comments: Respiratory problems? Cancer? Chronic Cough? Tinnitus? From: RM2 Seafeldt, USS Satyr, ARL-23 Gunboat Repair Ship Date: Tuesday October 27, 1999 Time: 01:03 Comments Hi there from Seattle from RM2 Ed Seafeldt. Im a federal employee, with a wife and 3 daughters. Spent 31 years in the military, 11 in the Navy and 20 in the Army. Not a pleasant subject but do any of the rest of you have respiratory problems from your service in Vietnam? I started coughing while there and by the time I got home in February 1970 was coughing up blood/sputum. At age 19-21 I coughed violently for up to 2-3 hours a day. Gradually my cough got better but by the mid- 1980s had acquired bronchitis and adult asthma and had periodic bouts of severe coughing spells. I then acquired sleep apnea and had surgery to partially correct the problem. My chronic cough has continued in 1999 with a vengance. I have been sick with a lung infection since January 1999 and it now involves my frontal lobe (constant headache); chest (heart pain); stomach cramps(constant pain) and testicles (pain from coughing); speech(difficult); eyes (bloodshot); eating (diffiult because in interferes with breathing); vomiting (caused by violent coughing). Doctors at the Seattle VA and Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound don't know what to do with me. They love to throw medications at me but that just complicates things. If any of this seems like something that is similar to what you have please let me know. INFO / RESEARCH FOR YOU WHO HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS (1) Vietnamese fish products are recognized world wide for paragonisis (lung flukes or "parasites" These devils get in your lungs and tear you up. Classic symptoms are a severe cough and blood in sputum. (2) Nitrous Dioxide - Used in arc welding. Too much of this in Vietnam and your lungs were toast. (3) Forget about agent orange and dioxin. The government and big business shut this down. No matter what you say, unless you have terminal respiratory cancer you will never see a dime of compensation. And even if you do you will never spend any of the compensation because you will be dead. (4) Many of the ships we served on were from WWII and literally, recommissioned time bombs filled with asbestos products. "Ambitious stewards of industry" modified our ships while we were on them, disturbing the asbestos resulting in us breathing the particles into our lungs. Tastey huh. BOTTOM LINE If any of you have considered that your the only one with respiratory problems, think again. Lets talk "compensation". "Buddy statements" are about the only thing the VA understands. Please E-mail me RM2 Edward Seafeldt, Seattle, Washington Ma99ma[ at ]wa.freei.net or call me at home in the evenings (206) 283-7409 or at work (206) 281-3005. Im so screwed up from Vietnam that I only work a couple of hours each day, normally in the mornings. TINNITUS If you have tinnitus from Vietnam I can help you with your claim with the VA. I just received retroactive disability pay going back to the early 1980s for tinnitus in one year from gunfire, radio noise and concussion grenades. I also receive disability pay for burning my foot off in 1990 and severing my plantar fascia in my heel in 1981. Look forward to talking to you. God Bless ya even if your not all screwed up. River Rats stick together! Thanks to Albert Moore. Edward & Margie Seafeldt, Seattle, Washington

This picture must have been taken around Jan. '70 because I can remember being on the fantail shortly after super and one of your mess cooks dumped a can of trash & garbage off your stern and about 4 to 5 local civilians dugout boats, with make shift nets, started scooping this junk up. We had to use the high pressure fire hoses to keep them away from the ships because it was during the Tet offence and we were under orders not to dicharge our weapons unless we were fired upon. We were attached to COMLANSHIPRONTWO (command landing ship squadron two) and based out of Vung Tau at AB&T (Alaska barrage & transport) compound where we would beach the ship, open the bow doors, lower the tank ramp, & take on supplies.I hope to see more pictures, since I did not take any during my tour (I could not imagine anyone ever wanting to remember those days) and for that I am sorry. Would like to hear from my shipmates (it's been so long - can't even remember the names :-{ ). God Bless the USN!!!!!

Found your site while looking up Navy Reunions. The detail on the bombing of YRBM 16 brought back a lot of memories as I was stationed aboard the USS Hunterdon County (LST-838) as an SM3. That Thanksgiving night 1967, I just went on the Mid watch on the bridge and shortly after midnight I heard the call for assistance to help the YRBM 16. We immidately went to General Quarters and made the transit up river on a ship that was 327' in almost pitch black darkness. We were all affraid that we were heading into an ambush but made it safely there to the scene to help put the fires out. Hello fellow Gator Navy types and coast line sailors. I was on 3 LSTs and the USS WHITE RIVER from 1964 to 1968, seeing action in Vietnam on each one. My memory is that we were just doing the jobs assigned to us and didn't think anything about being heroes or doing anything special. -- Looking back, we were actually heroes. We did our duties, didn't think about doing anything else and deserve the kudos of the AMERICAN PUBLIC. I know that the WHITE RIVER received the SecNavUnitCommendation (2nd highest award in the Navy) an no telling what else and I suppose each ship I was on received something. I know that the USS WEXFORD COUNTY (LST 1168) was hit in Sept. 65 but fortunately the shell didn't explode. We laughed it off at the time but looking back, I realize that the entire crew is lucky to be alive. The TOM GREEN COUNTY and the WASHOE COUNTY were also work horses and exceptionaly active and heroic, **Its really hard to believe that I could have seen so much action in 4 years. Even rode helicopters off the White River going to get the mail. Had to fly over hundreds of miles of jungles and even drop down in them to let troops off going to and coming back from Chu Lai. A great experience but wouldn't want to do it again. Me and my mail bag saw lot of action each time we pulled into port. Rode on swift boats, tanks, jeeps, tanks that went into the ocean, everything. WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM anybody onboard those ships (White River from around Mar 67 to July 68) (Wexord County around Dec. 64 to Mar 65) (Tom Green County arund Mar 66 to July 66) ( Washoe County around July 66 to Mar 67) The dates and people are obviously fuzzy at this point, especialy as I drank Vietnamese beer twice during those years and got completely wiped out. -- - - I spent several weeks at Monkey Mountain in Danang getting transferred from one ship ot another, was on shore patrol with a billy club and had to escort the drunk bus around the area while it was being attacked (I've never seen anything so incredibly dumb), and spent the last day there waiting for a swift boat to go down the entire coast of Vietnam to get to my new ship on operation I waited at the Vietnamese naval base, drinking Vietnamese beer, don't remember much about the ride down the coast except that we ran aground in enemy territory, etc. --- Anyway, it was a four year blast and I even found time to bring home a Philipphino wife. Salutes to all!! REMEMBER, we did the right thing. The USA let us down by fighting a limited war and not going after the enemy in North Vietnam. Thats why we won WW11 and WW1, we went after the enemy on their home ground (eventually). In addition, the protestors were protesting about the wrong thing ..... They should have been saying, Get in there, fight, get it over with and come home, not get out at any cost. REMEMBER, we can never fight another limited action. ITS WIN OR ELSE. DON'T FIGHT A HOLDING WAR!!!!! I believe that we did learn that lesson. WHAT EVER YOU DO..... Promote this slogan. No more limited wars. Go after the ENEMY. Regards. Wesley

There are so many memories. I just read the book Papa Bravo Romeo (PBR) and it was so vivid about the boat guys and all the bad stuff they had to face. I look back and realize just how damn lucky some of us were. For those of you that lost something or someone over there I feel for you as we all do. It was a different time and a different place and all of us were changed in one way or another. I went from a shy boy to a confident man when I returned...all because of the hard work, the arduous task, the great men that gave it all for what we believed was for our country. Right or wrong the war did alot of things to me and probably all of you and quite frankly I wouldn't trade those years for anything. Saw the pictures of downtown Vung Tau (been there, done that)(had a nice "barb er shop" near the right side of the picture, as I remember) and that hotel/restaurant. Quite a trip...some I remember, some I don't care to. Took all four LST's (Luzerne, Pitkin, and 2 others) back to Mare Island early 1970. Boy, I had been on old Fletcher-class DD's, but those T's were really antiques. Had a Loran on there that was so old, had to manually count each step. "Killer" Krause (ET-2) and I made it go away (haha) and I used celestial and visual nav all the way back. Food was so bad, most of the crew ate C-rats. Wonder where Len("Gumby Gad") Gadsinski and Baldini are??? Flew back Incountry to the Mark and finished my tour on it. Was supposed to have gone to the Junk Force as advisor, but they wanted me to extend incountry for another year. However, "Vietnamization" was going on then (remember that??), so just completed my tour.

I was an 'intelligence/combat' photographer, whatever that is, stationed with UDT-13 and spent a week or so on board the USS TERREL COUNTY prior to SEAFLOAT being built. While there, we had a few search and destroy operations, got ambushed a couple times and ate some good chow on board the TC. Our OIC was LT Bruce Dyer (retired as CAPT). The officer in charge of creating SEAFLOAT flew in one day while we were 'hiking' along the river bank with an eye out for local inhabitants with AK's and we gave him some protection from whatever as we checked out Old Nam Canh and some other places in that area. SEAL One had some guys hot bunking with us. MM1 Moki Martin, Solano, Gore, Farmer, and Dee Daigle were there. LT Tim Wettack was the SEAL OIC. They worked at night and we worked during the day. Prior to my arriving, PCF 43 got blown up on the river by a VC attack that ultimately set off all the demolitions on board. During the firefight, Doc Worthington the UDT Corpsman, the skipper of the boat LTJG Don Drosz, and the coxn of the PCF, QM3 Tom Holloway, were killed. Most of the UDT men and most of the boat's crew were wounded. As a result of this action, John Lowry of UDT-13 got the Silver Star. Art Ruiz and Mike Sandlin of UDT were wounded. Art went home for a while and later came back on active duty. Mike returned to duty after a bullet hole through his thigh healed. He's not back on active duty as a recruiter for the SEALs. I am looking for anyone that was on the LST-786 at the same time I was aboard her. I was in the signal gang. They called me SMOBS. We spent the night of TET off of Vin Long. The fire fight that night was one to remember. I believe we had the whole village aboard the ship that night. We also had an attachment of (2) Sea Wolf UH-1 aboard along with providing support for the PBR's. I am looking for a TF-117 patch that we had on the black berets. If anyone can help locate one please contact me at the listed e-mail address. Thanks, and welcome home Bros.

I came on board LST-1123 Jan 68 at NSA Da Nang. Chief ordered me to the pier for beer call. I was 20, told the chief I was too young to drink. He said "where the hell do you think you are? " I drank my first of many beers: Pabst Blue Ribbon. I was fresh from Great Lakes Engineman A School and they made me the logroom yeoman. When I became EN3, I was fuel oil water king and in charge of aux engine room. We delivered suppies to Cua Viet, Chu Lai,and up the Bassac River to the Mobile Riverine Force. We patrolled the coast in Market Time and hosted PCFs and their crews. I would like to hear from anyone who served on the Sedgewick County during 1968-69, especially Walter Johnson, Rick Perryman, Bruce Chaffee, Lonnie French, Bruce Mazzone and others I worked with. 4706 W. Arrived in the Nam for Tet '68 aboard USS Kemper County (LST854) in support of river ops. Hit bases in all Corps but spent most of our time between DaNang and Saigon. Watched fuel piers a Vung Tau go up one night after rocket attacks on LST. Upon return to the world to see all the antiwar stuff of 69-74 in SoCal and San Francisco, stayed in reserves and joined PBRs at Mare Island. Got commissioned in '73 and checked out in '74...now a family man with my own two little reasons to continue to uphold and defend our freedoms and way of life forever and "against all enemies, foreign and domestic". Peace and Strength in Unity and Freedom.
