Great job on this web page. I served on USS TUTUILA (ARG-4), first in An Thoi and then in Nha Be, 1970. The photo of the Annapolis really brought back memories. Processed through the Annapolis in spring 1970 but never did get a pic of it; bought my Pentax after I got to the "Toot." Will pass this link on to a couple of buddies I'm still in touch with. Anyone have any photo's of either Nha Be or TUTUILA?

You have a great site which brought back alot of memories. In 69-70 I was deployed to Vietnam with MCB-#1 where we broke up into teams and worked various types of assignments. My crew and I worked at most all your advanced bases in the Delta including one you don't seem to mention, An Thoi over on Phu Quoc Island. I hope our efforts made life a bit easier for you guy's after we completed the work. We also did some work for the Army over in Rung Sat. Alot of hard work went into this site, thank you.......Bob
Record 445 Great site, nice to read all the messages. Was thinking it was all a big dream, until I came upon the web site.Looking at some the pictures sure brings back memories. Never thought I would ever see pictures of Ha Tien again.
Looking for a William Pinkerman that served in nsa Dong Tam in 70-71, I think you saved my life over there, so they told me.Will the world ever know what we went through. It sure was a hell of a way to spend my 19th birtday. Will submit some photos soon.

Record 1145 I had been on the USS Alamo LSD-33,up around DaNang, when I got orders for Mine Div 113, went states side for the training and ended up learning how to drive a river boat, not bad for a Gunners Mate 3rd. Flew into Saigon like everybody else, and hopped a ride to Nha Be, We worked on our ORE stuff for awhile, watched a big ship sink off the pier from a mine of some sort. Then we pulled up stakes and moved up/down river to the Mekong. USS Askari, then a couple of YRBMs, lots of time checking out sampans and setting out in the middle of the river playing cards and taking pictures. Then we went up/down river to Ha Tien, where we patrol the river (I forgot the name) that comes out of Cambodia. That is where I got my Purple Heart and Bronze Star, catching shrapnel in the leg and helping out the crew that were worse off than I was. By the way it was on Friday the 13th. We were there for sometime 3 or 4 months then back to the Mekong in May one our way to Nha Be, where we were doing the Vietnamization of our boats to the ARVN's. All in all not to bad, however it is growing dimmer and dimmer on the small details. We did work with the little speed boats with the remote control and chain bottom drag, which I remember. Funny I cant remember my own boat capt. though. I do remember an EN from Xenia, Oh but not his name There was Hemphill, I think from Ca, a Wilcox that got pretty shot up and had to go stateside, I had a friend on the boat that got sunk, I think if was MSR #7, In fact he lives here in the same town I do, Rulon Young is his name. I will try and get some pictures out for all to see if there is anymore interest. Great site for all us River Rats. Have a good one.

Record 1227 Congratualtions on this great site. It provides a great service. I have been researching information on my wife's uncle, GMG3 Tom Copp, who was KIA on Feb. 13, 1970 while on MSR-3 or MSR-4 as part of Mine Division 113. Tom was operating out of Ha Tien in late 1969 and early 1970. I am trying to reach crewmates or others who knew him to be able to learn more about his experience in Vietnam and share it with Tom's family. I've sent some photos of Tom to Kent Hawley, so hopefully they can be posted on this site. I have also corresponded with Woody Arnell and Rulon Young, both of whom served in Mine Division 113 at the same time as Tom. Woody was on MSR-6 when it (along with Tom's boat)came under attack on Feb. 13, 1970 and Tom was killed just a few weeks before the end of his third and final tour. Rulon was on MSR-7 when it was sunk some two weeks earlier, on Jan. 30, 1970 (there is a photo of the sunken MSR-7 on this website). Tom's boat was the cover boat for the MSR-7 that day, and as I understand it, he and his crew picked up Rulon and the rest of the MSR-7 crew (some off the MSR-7, some on the beach) under heavy fire as the MSR-7 burned and sank. Tom's memorial service (and that of David Hoffman, KIA 02/26/70) was held on March 11, 1970 at Ha Tien, with Rev. L.L. Westling presiding. Lt. Robert Aurin was the commanding officer at Ha Tien. Anyway, Tom's family has been happy to learn more about his service in Vietnam, and we would appreciate very much hearing from anyone his crewmates or others who remember him. Thanks.

Record 1611 I left CosDiv 11 just before SeaFloat and Solid Anchor were set up. CosDiv 11 was a coastal division until about November of 68. Then we suited up in Tiger Greens and tried to take on "Charlie" on his home truf. I can remember Ha Tien, Rach Gia, the Cau Lon, the Bassac, Old Nam Can, Song Ong Doc and the wonderful high banks of the Vinh Te where it cuts northwest along the border. Running those rivers in Swift Boats sure was interesting(?). Not much protection in the Swifts against "in coming". Was glad to leave there and let the guys in the River Divisions with the PBRs and the other Riverine Warfare boats take over those nasty day and night patrols. Hated night patrols and ambushes. At times couldn't see anything except the boat's wake. "Charlie" got real good at sighting in on that. Plus our boats weren't as quiet as some of gthe RivDiv boats. You got a great site here. I'll be back for more trips down memory lane

Record 1783 As helmsman(RD3) of PCF-38 I was part of the first 3 swifts to transit (Bernique's Creek) Vinh Te canal to the Bassac. Then down river to Rocket Alley which we transited to Rach Gia. Then Rach Gia via canal(with horse shoe in it)north to Ha Tien and back to salt water. All the fireworks was at the first big bend east of Ha Tien. The officers were all called to Saigon to tell our version of the 100's of innocent Cambodians and children (8 VC Kia's) we did in. Not a shot was fired by us the rest of the three days(except for a few large birds that flushed at the wrong time). Remember watching the bullets splashing toward us in the water as we went down the Bassac and weren't allow to fire back(friendly village)was unforgetable. Everywhere from HaTien south was a free fire zone(except a couple of green beret outposts) so that(Bassac) was disturbing to us.The three days was very nerve-wracking but actually far less damaging to us as were other places/days/patrols. Got wounded off Nam Can in March 69 and eventually got lost in the navy hospital paperwork and ended up on a destroyer out of Mayport,FL. Many other hairy raids fit in between the first trip east to the Bassac and my last raid near Nam Can in March 69. You've got a great site here. THANK YOU.

Record 1995 As a unit of the Naval Special Warfare Group, our Beach Jumper Team 13 of 6-8 personnel moved about often on various specops assignments. We reported to COMNAVFORV but made home base where ever we landed. I had the privilege of working with the Brown Water Navy on many occassions in different locations in IV Corps, from Parrot's Beak, to Mekong River, on Vinh Te canal, to Rach Gia and Ha Tien. Really enjoyed the open and friendly hospitatily where ever we went and the tough professionalism of the sailors that went with the ride-into-harm's-way. Am enjoying the many photos of places and craft that bring back some special memories. Will visit again.
