HA(L)-3 started a perminant detachment at Rach Gia in April, 1970 and I must have flown at least 20 missions in support of your "water born guardposts".
So I have a question: What ever happened to Hugh Highland and Di We Nee?

My brother (ENC J.A.Wilkey) told me of your web-page on 11/6 and I've been surfing since. I appreciate the effort you've made to save and share the history that effected so many, yet, is known by so few. I served aboard the YRBM-20 from the beginning, as I helped put her in service when she came in country February 1969. I served in RVN from 2 Aug 68 to 5 Aug 69. From the Annapolis I was assigned to NAVSUPPAC Vinh Long. We worked on the river aboard a barge (YR-9) much like the YRBM but lived and ate at a confiscated French villa about 3 miles across town. HAL-3, Det-3 was at the Army Air base next door. The 20 was towed from Japan where she had been built, and tied alongside the YR-9 which had been moved and anchored in the river near the RVN Navy Base, Vinh Long. When we moved aboard the 20, we remained anchored NW of the town of Vinh Long. Our original configuration was as follows: port and starboard ammies
housed the PBR squadrons, 52 & 57. The beer bar was on the first starboard ammi and known as "The Shack Out Back". The aft ammi had the SEAL Team hooch on it (Team-1, Charlie Platoon). There was also a smaller pusher barge aft, with 2 diesel engines ... used primarly for flight operations. HAL-3 came aboard with 2 Bell UH-1B gunships. I was assigned to them as their first LSE and all purpose gopher (I was an SK2). Near the end of April '69 we lost both of those birds (320 & 305) and 4 close friends in Cambodia: M. Schaferknocker, J. Hart, H. Castle, R. Reardon. It was after this incident that we moved closer to Cambodia. In May, we were towed by a civilian tug up the Mekong to An Long. We moved only once in my remaining time aboard the 20. That move (propelled by the pusher barge) was only a few miles to find the widest spot in the river. So the 20 must have moved to Chau Duc between Aug. and Oct. '69. Lt. Clark was our Captain. I knew Steve Crandall, whose pictures you have in your collection ... great guy. We were never known as the "Delta Hilton" while I was aboard, although we knew we were living well! I have many photos, both print and slides but they're not saved to disk. I'll try my best to get that done and send them. WELCOME HOME, to you and all who served.

Record 1664 I went to Nam aboard the USS PRINCETON LPH-5 as part of the Marine Aviation Detachment,(Sailors in Green), In 1961 and 62 we took Detachments of Air America helicopters over to Nam. We were operating out of Subic Bay, PI and were moored alongside Cubi Point NAS. We on loaded H-19's, UH 34's Kaman huskies, (Widow Makers), and even a few Cessna L-19A "Birddogs". We had Pilots from the various services aboard and on the way over to where we did not know, the hanger crews painted out all the US insignia on the aircraft. Then early one morning we went to General Quarters and Flight Quarters and prepared to launch the aircraft. We were shocked when the pilots and crew came out to man their planes in "civvies". The 1mc announced that we were off the coast of South Vietnam and we sent our birds away while the USS Coral Sea flew air cover for us. Then we skedattled back to Subic. With instructions not to mention the incident for twenty years...times up!
The USS Princeton Veterans Association is looking for shipmates who served aboard her in any capacity, whether as crew, in a squadron or just TAD. Go to the Princeton Website and join up! We are over 350 strong and growing. Our next reunion will be in Norfolk, VA in 2004.

Record 2041 I was forward gunner on Petersons,s boat. BM1 Yakey was
patrol leader. The other crew members were Hubbard (snipe)
and Moon, after gunner. I also was on Dotson,s boat
with Gurney. Gurney cut my beret ribbon on my 5th patrol. What ever happened on patrol with LCMD Shepard
when he took the Times Life photojornalist up river on MEDCAP. I ran off Peterson,s boat, per orders of Yakey, to get Sea Wolfs up. The Sea Wolfs were on the incorrect channel and didn't here the fire fight. The boat Shepard was on and his cover boat were under heavy fire. When I cleared the wall of the friendly camp I tried to jump over a pool of water and fell into a trap. I was drowning and all I could feel was the air on my fingers. I had my piece in my grip and all of a sudden I was being lifted out of the trap by the seawolf gunners. The gunners loaded me on to their seawolf and I blurted out the proper op frequency and started to vomit. The next day I had a high temperature and was waiting for YN1 Morrison to take me to the hospital and I walked off base. I was told later that I had fallen into a ditch unconsious and I was taken to an Army Hospital located in the Bien Thuy area. I was in a comma and finally came out of it several weeks later. I do remember that I had lost almost half my body weight. My unit was transfered to the USS Garriet County while I was in the hospital. I was told the door gunners of the Seawolf, who saved my life that day, were quartered forward on this LST. I went over to their quarters and fell down the lader and caught my arm on a S-hook holding the lader. I was literally meat on a hook. The door gunners again assisted me by taking me to Doc. To make a long story short I would be medivaced back to the States for more surgery and physical therapy.
I would deeply appreciate anyone knowing what happened on the day of the fire fight to contact me. I would love to here from any members of PBR Section 512.
