Was stationed at Nha Be 66-67 MSB Detachment Alpha. We were the first group activated at Nha Be and had to establish the base for Minesweepers. Total number of boats was about 12. During the first 8 months of operations, we had quite a few casualities. I was originally trained at Long Beach, Ca. to be in support, but due to battle injuries of the EM2 on boat #15, I was assigned to complete the remaining 11 months aboard her. The boat ( 52 feet ) had a complement of 6 crewmen. I remember the skippers name ( John Milum BM1 ) but can't recall the other fellows. Hopefully you guys read this and get in contact. Would you beleive, i've been searching for years to find a site where MSB sailors could tell their stories. We have quite a few to tell...for instance...how about that EM2 aboard boat #52 that was hit with 2-3 rockets smack on the pilot house and lived!! the pilot house was GONE. All he had on was his BOOTS while still holding on to what was left of the wooden helm.

Hi:
I was frequently in Tra Cu with my company. We worked regularly with the Navy along the banks of the Vam Co Dong Follows is an article I wrote:
During the late summer of 1969 the mission of the 1/27 changed from one of large company size reconnaissance in force operations to one of small unit (platoon and squad) ambush and interdiction operations. These operations were configured to deny the NVA supply access to the populated areas of Hau Niga Provence ( west of Cu Chi) and to stem the flow of supplies and troops flowing from the end of the Ho Chi Minh trail in Cambodia into the Saigon Area.
In late July 1969 the 1/27 relocated and constructed Fire Support Base Chamberlain on the Bao Tri ( provincial capital oh Hau Niga Provence) and the Duc Hua/Saigon Road which effectively cut of the flow of material moving south along the highway. The battalion then began operations to the west in areas that were former rice and pineapple fields ( now overgrown, laced with tunnels, supply caches and booby traps) the area extended to the west to the Vam Co Dong River and from the west banks of the river to the Cambodian border.
To accomplish the mission the combat companies were assigned to various RIF , interdiction and ambush duties throughout the AO the object being to create a maze of ambush and check points between the border and the populated areas that were adjacent to the Bao Tri/Duc Hua road. Part of the process assigned 1/27 troops to duty on the Vam Co Dong River in conjunction with the U.S. Navy and the RVN Navy. 1/27 companies were assigned on a rotating base to Tra Cu navel station which was at the intersection of the Vam Co Dong and the Tui Nau industrial canal. This station was approx. 5 miles from the end of the Parrots Beak and the terminus of the Ho Chi Minh trail.
The Tra Cu station contained a real mixed bag of forces and units : U.S. Navy Swift boat (PBR) detachment, RVN Navy with U.S. advisors operating as a River Assault and Interdiction unit with armored landing craft and monitor type vessels, A U.S. Army Infantry Company who operated with the Navy , A Special Forces detachment and a group of Cambodian Mercenaries one of who=s mission was planting listening devices along the Ho Chi Minh trail and monitoring NVA base camps in Cambodia, A military intelligence listing unit who monitored and processed the raw intelligence from the listening device, a 155mm Artillery Battery and a detachment of Air boats similar to the ones seen in the Florida everglades.
The activities along the river for the B Co 1/27 were fairly simple. We worked with the Navy stopping and monitoring river traffic. We were on alert as a rapid reaction force if the Special Forces got into trouble and we conducted RIF=s during the day and ambushes at night along the banks of the river at likely crossing points. A typical operation might be looking along the bank for signs of enemy activity, prepping the area with a small fire artillery fire mission to clear out the booby traps, landing a platoon of infantry and conducted reconnaissance the area looking for enemy activity, locating supply caches or stirring up a fight. Night operations were similar we split up the companies and put in ambush patrols at likely crossing points along the bank to lay in wait for enemy troops attempting to move across the river. Enemy contact was frequent but usually small units and resulted in the NVA being redirected back across the Cambodian border to their sanctuaries. The worst enemy was the booby traps along the crossing point and protecting the supply caches we uncovered. The majority of our casualties were booby trap related but during the course of the operations along the river we took several prisoners, produced some body count, and captured untold amount of weapons and supplies.
Were we successful? I think so. We saw the farmers move their fields back into former VC areas and reclaim land closer to the river. In addition when I arrived at FSB Chamberlain as it was being constructed you needed to go via heavily armed convoy to get to Duc Hua and then on to Ben Hua and Saigon. By the time the end of 1969 rolled around you thought nothing of taking a jeep and driving into the city like any other tourist.
Yea Wolfhounds !!!

Arrived 28 June 1969. Departed 29 June 1970. Served whole time on YFU64 as an Engineman. Remember Don Clark who has visited this site. Also, Nick Toto(NY), John "Aardvark" Nowak(NY), Howard Van Erem(WI), Thomas Jefferson Pate, some Army Warrant named Ferriby (?), and a lot of faces without names. I have a few pictures around the house somewhere. I also remember an EM3 named Ken Seith(NY) who after a trip to Subic Bay prompted us to paint "Almost Cherry" on the con until command in Danang had us remove it. It was a long year and a lot of work. I also remember the chief snipe on YFU61 was a good friend of mine named Karl "Red" Anderson. Last I knew he lived in FL but was originally from upstate NY. We went thru 9 craftmasters in the time I was there. Only one injured and evac'd. Would love to hear from any others who ever did time on YFU64.

Arrived Nha Be early April 68. Was heavy equipment operator and operated the crane that lifted out many damaged boats. Also drove the 18 wheeler that brought all supplies, ammo, food, and beer that got into Nha Be for about 7 months. Lots of close calls on the road but was too young and dumb to realize how God cared for me. I got rush orders to Danang and my replacement (Earl Leighton EO2) was killed shortly after when the 500 lb. mine exploded. Mike Nolan CE2 was also killed and close friend Bruce Lindhorst UT2 was seriously injured. I have quite a few pictures and slides of Nha Be and will share them with anyone interested. Other Seabees at Nha Be at the time was Joe Sweat BU,John Thorne EO2 ,Gosnell EO,Mechanics from Los Gatos, Ca. and Billy Sherill from Indianapolis. Minnetello was a steelworker and I can not remember the names of the other Seabees off the top of my head. We assembled the crane on the Mobile Support Base II and have pics and a news clipping about it. I would like to hear from anyone that can refresh some of the old memories. Everyone take care and if I can help you in any way just call. Gator

I was assigned to PBR Mobile Base One when it was still on the drawing board. At the time, no one could tell me anything about the base. After SERE training, I found it in Long Beach, CA. At that time it was just four barges being built and outfitted. It was ready to deploy in September of 1967. We loaded it aboard two LSD's; the Comstock and Whetstone and set sail for Saigon. Rough water made the crossing to Pearl a nine day ordeal. Before Pearl we got orders to Danang. I don't do rough seas very well (Being from the mid-west, I never learned about sea sickness until I joined the Navy.) At Pearl, I talked my skipper into letting me fly on ahead to Danang and set everything up for the base's arrival. We were towed up to Tan My at the mouth of the Perfume River from Danang in calm seas and anchored with four 6,000lb Danforth anchors. The PBR's showed up a few days later and started their patrols. Things were very quiet in that area of Vietnam until TET. Even then, the base itself never saw any action. To my knowledge, everyone got home safe and sound.

I already have a entry (guest record 644) but wanted to update/add info. I was the RM3 on T-112-2, my boat captain was Guy Dail, he was the old white haired BM1 who had been called back to active duty from the fleet reserve to run mike boats (LCM-6). He passed away a few years ago. Also our boat coxswain Johnny Maness (I hate to use this description of him, but he was the real light skinned black guy) has also passed away. Since I last logged in besides finding an old boat mate of mine, (Roger Pete), I have also had contact with guys from other boats in our Division that served there at the same time as me. They are Paul Kuhn from T-112-6, and Jack Barwick from the 112 Zippo boat. If anybody from our Division in the same timeframe reads this and needs there e-mail addresses contact me at my e-mail address and I can give it to you, also if you know of any other guys I haven't listed I would appreciate that info. I am writing this on the friday following the terrorist attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon, them Dot Heads have to get there due, and I hope Pres. Bush doesn't pussyfoot around like they did when we were in Nam. God bless you and God bless America.

Coxwain/RM3 on A-112-4 (aka PATCHES and Later HO'S NIGHTMARE) We resurrected her after her trip to the river's bottom after multiple rocket hits in late Feb 68. We took her out on our first mission escorting VN boats laden with rice and bldg materials up a canal to the west of Dong Tam.
It was supposed to be a "milk run"..show the flag etc. Trouble was neither of our gun mounts had been repaired yet and we engaged in our first fire fight with M-16s, a shotgun, one pistol, and a case of frags. We survived so I guess we won....shades of things to come. Still looking for

I was an 'intelligence/combat' photographer, whatever that is, stationed with UDT-13 and spent a week or so on board the USS TERREL COUNTY prior to SEAFLOAT being built. While there, we had a few search and destroy operations, got ambushed a couple times and ate some good chow on board the TC. Our OIC was LT Bruce Dyer (retired as CAPT).
The officer in charge of creating SEAFLOAT flew in one day while we were 'hiking' along the river bank with an eye out for local inhabitants with AK's and we gave him some protection from whatever as we checked out Old Nam Canh and some other places in that area. SEAL One had some guys hot bunking with us. MM1 Moki Martin, Solano, Gore, Farmer, and Dee Daigle were there. LT Tim Wettack was the SEAL OIC. They worked at night and we worked during the day.
Prior to my arriving, PCF 43 got blown up on the river by a VC attack that ultimately set off all the demolitions on board. During the firefight, Doc Worthington the UDT Corpsman, the skipper of the boat LTJG Don Drosz, and the coxn of the PCF, QM3 Tom Holloway, were killed. Most of the UDT men and most of the boat's crew were wounded. As a result of this action, John Lowry of UDT-13 got the Silver Star. Art Ruiz and Mike Sandlin of UDT were wounded. Art went home for a while and later came back on active duty. Mike returned to duty after a bullet hole through his thigh healed. He's not back on active duty as a recruiter for the SEALs. (53 years old)

How well I remember SEAFLOAT, 1969 - 1970.
I did a tour with the BietHi escorting the sand barges aboard SWIFT boats (no place to hide.)
If the world had a rectal orfice, it would definetly be in Nam Can Vietnam.
What I did for fun while I was there? I shot rats at night with my .38 S&W.

To those that gave their lives for us to come home: " You will always be remembered, Thank You!"
