Record 797 I was up the hill from you during 1969-70. One of your crews was kind enough to take me and the NILO out for an overnighter, I appreciated your kindness.
I still remember a briefing I got, in Saigon, just prior to going to Ha Tien. They put up some slides, showing some of the great locations (assignments) in Vietnam. Then they said that it was not all great and put up a slide of Ha Tien.
I must say that I enjoyed my tour there and it was because of the great guys I met at Ha Tien. Thanks for the momories.

He never spoke much of Viet Nam, other than he served on the Bayfield and Enterprise, and that he was on PBR somewhere around DaNang area. He received the Purple Heart for wounds received when two boats came under attack. He was there from 66 thru 68. He graduated from high school in New Jersey and enlisted in California/ basic in San Diego? If anyone served with him or knew him, please contct me. Also, if anyone can help me find out how to get the VA to allow a dying vet to die in any VA hospital, please e-mail me. My brother's story of dying is only three weeks long, but too long for this guest book. I made him a promise before he died but don't know how to fulfill it. Record 794 I enjoyed reading your WEB page, and especially enjoyed the pictures of Plantation Road. I recognized many of the sites in the pictures. Although as a medical advisor to the VN Air Force Surgeon I traveled all over the country, when at my home base at VN Air Force Headquarters my sleeping quarters were the "Florida Bar"--a building on Plantation Road that had been leased by our government that housed 36 of us advisors. Maybe some of you remember passing the Florida Bar--the sign remained even while we lived there.
My two experiences with the Navy were during my enlised days before I received a direct commission as a Medical Service Corps officer: 1951-Corpsman school at Great Lakes[The Air Force didn't have a school and so we trained at Great lakes]. AND 1952-my trip to Japan as a passenger about the USS Haase. When I enlisted in 1951, the Navy was my first choice but the recruiter had a waiting list and I did't want to wait--so the Air Force.
Keep up the good work and know that all of us who served really appreciate what you are doing to preserve an important part of our history.

Record 787 Stationed in Vinh Long April 1967-April 1968 Engineman/ Fireman. Repairing all boats and landing craft in support of the River Patrol Squadrons. Up to the night of Jan 30 1968 we seemed to be in a state of suspended animation from the rest of the war. The countryside was beautiful and the people seemed friendly. I was standing mid watch on the piers when all hell broke loose. Were we that naive? It is a long way from that time, but I remember it like it was yesterday.
I have a cruise book(I'd guess that's what you'd call it)from that time and some photos of the village after the attack on that night. Anybody remember those days? If anyone has queries about anyone in the unit I have names but not much else other than an official military story of the attack on Jan 30th. I received that when I was discharged from the Navy in 1969. It was in my records. If anyone would want to see it I could Xerox it. It makes for good historical reading if nothing else.

Saw the pictures of downtown Vung Tau (been there, done that)(had a nice "barb er shop" near the right side of the picture, as I remember) and that hotel/restaurant. Quite a trip...some I remember, some I don't care to. Took all four LST's (Luzerne, Pitkin, and 2 others) back to Mare Island early 1970. Boy, I had been on old Fletcher-class DD's, but those T's were really antiques. Had a Loran on there that was so old, had to manually count each step. "Killer" Krause (ET-2) and I made it go away (haha) and I used celestial and visual nav all the way back. Food was so bad, most of the crew ate C-rats. Wonder where Len("Gumby Gad") Gadsinski and Baldini are??? Flew back Incountry to the Mark and finished my tour on it. Was supposed to have gone to the Junk Force as advisor, but they wanted me to extend incountry for another year. However, "Vietnamization" was going on then (remember that??), so just completed my tour.

I also want to thank the Seawolf helicopter crews for their brave gunfire support. I also want to thank the crews on my boats for their bravery under dangerous conditions. No one arrived and then small arms and artillery fire started up near the ferry. Vietnamse were disappearing and the price of Coca-Cola was escalating severely. I have never seen a more welcome sight than the Navy lifer ( and the PBR wth its resplendant American flag) motioning me to come with him. The PBR's crew heard I was stuck on the ferry landing and came back up the river more than 20 miles to get me. Guest Record 725 There are so many memories. I just read the book Papa Bravo Romeo (PBR) and it was so vivid about the boat guys and all the bad stuff they had to face. I look back and realize just how damn lucky some of us were. For those of you that lost something or someone over there I feel for you as we all do. It was a different time and a different place and all of us were changed in one way or another. I went from a shy boy to a confident man when I returned...all because of the hard work, the arduous task, the great men that gave it all for what we believed was for our country. Right or wrong the war did alot of things to me and probably all of you and quite frankly I wouldn't trade those years for anything. The beer parties...trips to town...Miss America...the huge C4 explosion...catching catfish...etc...etc...etc

Guest Record 724 YR-71 was at SCRF Annex, Camp Tien Shau, DaNang. We repaired and recovered PBR's (RIVDIV 543) and Swift Boats.
With our LCM-8 that was made into a floating mobile drydock.
After the turn over of the Swifts, the PBRs as well as the Coast Guard Cutters. We were sent south first to Cat LO then Vung Tau (rough duty) then up river to Bhien Thuy.
Set up shop mid-river outside NAVSUPACT Bhien Thuy until we
we moved up river to Tan Chau. We were at Tan Chau for a few months then we had company...If I remember correctly it was APL-23. Then it came time to DEROS...being a snipe meant sea duty....so I ETS and joined the Army.
Spent 23 years in the military and without a doubt my tours in the Brown Water Navy is what I consider the high light of my career... not only because of the location by the people that I had the pleasure of serving with...

My name is Joyce Snodgrass and my husband was stationed in Vietnam
from April 1970 thru April 1971. He was an advisor on River Patrol
Boats. He was stationed in Nah Be and Binh Thuy. His name was EN/2
Ronald D. Snodgrass (Snotty) from Texas. If I understand this right
he was Petty Officer in Charge of Commander Task Force 212 Mobile
Maintenance Advisor Team and later served as an advisor to Vietnamese
Navy RPD-57. I got this information from his citation for his Navy
Commendation Metal. I am trying to find out information about his
group and to try and locate anyone who may have served with him. Is
there any archives for his Task Force and Group. Ronnie died of Agent
Orange related cancer on Dec. 1, 1997. My two son's, one who was in
the Navy and one who is currently serving as a field medic in the Navy
(Stationed with the 1st Marines) would love to have this information.
I would appreciate any help that you might be able to give me.

Guest Record 719 While looking up information on Agent Orange, I came upon several swift boat,Riverine, and Brownwater Navy sites. My father was Capt.Bill Diffley and he was the CO at Nha Be in (I believe) 1969 and part of 1970... I remember how he worried if the boats were late getting back...He died in 1991 of AML, acute myelogenous leukemia, and now they are saying that there is a possible link to that and agent orange.....
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knew my daddy....I have some of his pictures from Nha Be and will try to get them out....unfortunately he was NOT a good photographer!!!
But he was a wonderful man.
My best to everyone who ever went to Viet Nam.

Guest Record 710 Hello fellow Gator Navy types and coast line sailors. I was on 3 LSTs and the USS WHITE
RIVER from 1964 to 1968, seeing action in Vietnam on each one. My memory is that we
were just doing the jobs assigned to us and didn't think anything about being heroes or
doing anything special. -- Looking back, we were actually heroes.
We did our duties, didn't think about doing anything else and deserve the kudos of the
AMERICAN PUBLIC. I know that the WHITE RIVER
received the SecNavUnitCommendation (2nd highest award in the Navy) an no telling what
else and I suppose each ship I was on received something.
I know that the USS WEXFORD COUNTY (LST 1168) was hit in Sept. 65 but fortunately the
shell didn't explode. We laughed it off at the time but looking back, I realize that the entire
crew is lucky to be alive. The TOM GREEN COUNTY and the WASHOE COUNTY were also
work horses and exceptionaly active and heroic, **Its really hard to believe that I could have
seen so much action in 4 years. Even rode helicopters off the White River going to get
the mail. Had to fly over hundreds of miles of jungles and even drop down in them to
let troops off going to and coming back from Chu Lai. A great experience but wouldn't
want to do it again. Me and my mail bag saw lot of action each time we pulled into port. Rode on swift boats,
tanks, jeeps, tanks that went into the ocean, everything. WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM anybody onboard those ships (White River from around Mar 67 to July 68) (Wexord County around Dec. 64 to Mar
65) (Tom Green County arund Mar 66 to July 66) ( Washoe County around July 66 to Mar
67) The dates and people are obviously fuzzy at this point, especialy as I drank Vietnamese
beer twice during those years and got completely wiped out. -- - - I spent several weeks
at Monkey Mountain in Danang getting transferred from one ship ot another, was on shore
patrol with a billy club and had to escort the drunk bus around the area while it was being
attacked (I've never seen anything so incredibly dumb), and spent the last day there waiting
for a swift boat to go down the entire coast of Vietnam to get to my new ship on operation
I waited at the Vietnamese naval base, drinking Vietnamese beer, don't remember much about
the ride down the coast except that we ran aground in enemy territory, etc. --- Anyway, it was
a four year blast and I even found time to bring home a Philipphino wife. Salutes to all!!
REMEMBER, we did the right thing. The USA let us down by fighting a limited war and
not going after the enemy in North Vietnam. Thats why we won WW11 and WW1, we went after
the enemy on their home ground (eventually). In addition, the protestors were protesting about the
wrong thing ..... They should have been saying, Get in there, fight, get it over with and come home,
not get out at any cost. REMEMBER, we can never fight another limited action. ITS WIN
OR ELSE. DON'T FIGHT A HOLDING WAR!!!!! I believe that we did learn that lesson.
WHAT EVER YOU DO..... Promote this slogan. No more limited wars. Go after the ENEMY.

Guest Record 705 Among the many camps I was at along the Cambodian border, I spent several weeks at Tra Cu ATSB. I remember that as one wild place. Mortar attacks, parachute flares, the awesome miniguns on the C-47 gunship, etc. Tra Cu scared the crap out of me many times during our short stay.
For those of you who might've been based there, you might remember the 60 foot tall orange tower that supported our radar system. Our mission was to detect infiltration from HCM trail along the border.

Guest Record 702 Served as an SK2 from 1970-1971. Worked in the supply office requisitioning supplies to repair the PBR'S. Commanding Officer Mr. Fry, and Supply Office was Ensign Hillouse. Stood Junior Officer of the deck watches. Remember the constant smell of the Nuc-Mom factory off to our port side. Very little privacy racks very tight, as I remember 6 high. Concusion granades constantly going over the side. As I recall the YRBM-21 was approx. 180 feet long and approx. 50 ft. wide. I believe 5 decks Including the flight deck which included 2 huey gun ships. We housed approx. 300 men including the vietnamese. I remember about the second week I got there we were watching a movie on the mess deck when a vietnamese stormed into the mess hall with a granade and started to pull the pin. Probably some sailor pissed him off that day. These guys were small , but very hot tempered. On of the sailors standing near him,and the granade and got him out of the mess deck. I said to myself , this is going to be a long year. Does anyone rember this incident approx. August 1970. I remember barges tied up along side of the 21 with the PBR'S tied up to them. I also remember our famous beer barge which was not too shabby. I also remember the cockroaches scurring accross the counter in the chow hall. I remember listening to Chriss Noel every day. I believe she lives with her husband not too far from where I live in Boyton Beach Fl. From what I understand Chriss is very active in veterans affairs. Things could have been much worse I'm sure. It wasn't a bad place to spend your year in Vietnam. Other guys would come to the 21 for in country R&R. I had to leave real suddenly after 8 months on the 21, as my father wa dying. The Red Cross got me home in 48 hours. I left in my greens and when I arrived at Kennedy airport I looked like a bum, and was called baby killer and was spat at. I met a bunch of great guys on the 21 and would do it again if I had to. Would sure like to hook up with anyone who served on the 21.
