I was on the YRBM 20 from Feb '71 until the 20 was towed to Long Pier in April '71. Most of the crew was released with undated orders and were suppose to be on their honor to report to Annapolis in three days. C.W.Bell and I got our orders stamped in Nha Be (by the same yeoman from the YRBM 20 that left the date off) and didn't reported in until we got orders for our next duty station, ten days later. We lived at the Vic' and in that short time learned how to make money selling non-rationed items like candy, soap and tissue paper from the well stocked Cholon PX. From that point on I never spent my paychecks but managed to stay at the Vic' so often the people at the front desk kept room 701 reserved for me the entire year I was in-country. By the way; the terrace of the Vic' that's on this web sight says it's on the 13th floor. For your information, I have a booklet I saved from the hotel that says the terrace was on the 9th floor.
From there I went to the YW 126 and Bell went to the YF 866. On the YW, we spent most of the time tied up at Cat Lo skiing, drinking beer, shooting the .45 at empty beer cans in the water and watching movies. We had three mama-sans cooking and cleaning the YW until we got caught of the coast of Vung Tau with them onboard. The Craftmaster got sent to another boat and we got an Admirals inspection. Everything turned out OK because the Admiral knew the women were there just to clean and since they had worked on the Cat Lo base before they were hired to work on the YW, we all got off with an ass-chewing and a new Craftmaster that turned out to be a good guy - Chief Dixon. We then went back to parting everyday at Cat Lo or Vung Tau; except when our screw fell off and we spent six weeks at the Port of Saigon in dry dock. I spent about two thousand dollars at the Vic' during that time on the room, a girl, parting around town, food and consa. I have many great memories of Saigon but have yet to see other vet's talk about the "fun" stuff. Like the USO show on the YRBM just before it got towed to Long Pier that featured the big breasted girl that did a striptease and more, kicking back in the nets around the flight deck of the YRBM while getting a buzz and watching the helo's shooting tracers at VC all night and all the other cool stuff people don't want their relatives to know about.
The YW was more like "McHale's Navy" with our laid back lifestyle and constant focus on liberty call. I had a unique tour; my brother was wounded six weeks after arriving in-country and is still disabled so I appreciate my good fortune. You have a great web site. Thanks for your hard work. was one of a handful of Seabees who supported a PBR group at ATSB Tra-Cu on Operation Giant Slingshot. Tra Cu was a small plot of land 2inches above sealeval appox: 5 miles from the cambodian boarder. was there on TAD for 3 months, wound up staying 6 befor returning with my unit in Da Nang. the reason I extended there was simple...I worked and fought alongside the best dam men in the Navy. Just thought I would try to reach out to a few Navy guys from back there. I really had it made my first tour, clubs and messes, working on slot machines in Danang, traveling all over I corps. I tore up my knee one night durring a mortor attack on the base. I ended up in 106th army hospital, yokohama japan. I felt bad about bieng there with all the others on the limb ward. anyway, I voluntered for a second tour when I recovered. yrbm-17 dong-tam was my next duty station. worked on river boats, water pumps, ramp gaskets for mike boats. Was the original eager-beaver firefighter on the navy base. Helped set up thousands of cambidoian refugees in dong tam at the old 9th div army base. If David Casman, Kieth tyler, Nick Nagel, frenchy, bear,or anybody else want to talk. E-mail me. I have some old photos of yrbm-17 crew

I was the District Phung Hoang (Phoenix) Army Advisor with the ARVN in Duc Tinh District, which included Sa Dec. We used to run combined ops with the navy riverine force based in Sa Dec -- mostly along the Mekong/Basac, but sometimes up the creeks and canals. I remember the navy mess hall in Sa Dec had by far the best US food around (not that there were many choices). I ate Thanksgiving dinner there twice on the same day. One op I went on with the riverine force was most interesting. I was with one other American advisor and we were along with our counterparts and an ARVN Regional Force platoon. We boarded landing craft at the navy pier and crossed to an island on the north bank of the Mekong we called "Football Field Island." One of the landing craft had a mortar mounted on it and that was to be our indirect fire support. There were also a couple of Swift boats along. The boats put us in and then stood off. We were looking for a VC camp from which VC came raiding into Sa Dec Province. The whole island was mud, mangroves, and little creeks. We found the camp (or at least a camp)-- a few hootches, a couple of individual weapons, ammo, the usual pile of documents -- but nobody except two women cooking a pot of rice almost the size of the ones cannibals have in cartoons. Charlie had obviously known we were coming and di-di'd. So -- we stopped for lunch (!) Remember -- these were ARVN. The advisors advised hot pursuit, but they were hungry. What rice they didn't eat, they tipped out and pissed on. THEN we went after the VC. As we were gearing up to leave. I looked at the two women and they looked very unhappy. I thought it was more for the wasted rice than this bunch of ARVN clowns chasing their menfolk. So -- I gave them a batch of piastres to pay for the rice. (Hey, I was young and American -- you pay for your food and don't upset ladies.) Off we went through absolutely foul ground. The mud stank; the creeks stank; bugs by the millions; and you couldn't see three feet away. You needed one hand to swat the bugs, one hand to hold your weapon, one hand to untangle yourself from the undergrowth, and one hand to hold of the branches whipping back from the guy ahead. And all they while, we could hear bits of music, shouts and laughter drifting our way from the navy holding position off the island. The we either caught up with Charlie or he caught us. We took fire from somewhere -- who could tell? Immediately, every ARVN started blazing away on full automatic in whatever direction his M-16 was pointed, then reloading and letting another magazine go. It was RRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPP! click-click-clack RRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAPPPPPPPPP! I looked over at the other American who, like me, had assumed the extremely prone position. He had the PRC-25 radio and was calling the navy for fire support. I snaked over and punched him and asked him if he knew where we were. He said he had no idea. I asked where the enemy was and he said he had no idea. I asked him how he was going to direct fire and he said he had no idea, but he wanted some. So I took the handset away from him and told them to wait. The firing died out, we we did a close-in search and found nothing, so we moved out. We finally got to a large creek too deep to ford and at last we knew where we were to some degree of accuracy. We figured that either the VC hadn't come this way or they had a gettaway sampan. We decided to call it a day. At least we had spoiled Charlie's lunch. We moved south alongside the creek to the south bank of the island and the boats came in to pick us up. As were were loading, we came under fire again. The boats hosed things down as we scambled aboard, but the fire continued, wounding one ARVN. When the craft I was on was loaded, THE RAMP WOULDN"T COME UP. The crew chief -- whatever his official title was, the guy in charge -- fought his way through squirming and yelling and ducking (and a few shooting) ARVN to the ramp and worked on it, but no joy. Meantime, Charlie is still popping away. Finally, the crew chief had the craft BACKED across the river. So we went backwards at full speed, with water swireling into the deck full of ARVN and me and the .50 hammering over our heads. Fun. We made it. On the 'friendly' side, the crew chief finally got the ramp closed by shoving up on the bank, cranking up on the ramp cable, and shoving again until it was closed and back to Sa Dec we sailed. Thank you, navy, for the good meals and getting my ass off that island. God bless America.

I was with Riv.Sec 543 March to Sept. in Nha Be, was with 535 in Can Tho Sept. to March '68. Scott Delph (PBR 750) was my boat captain. Marc Cline and Tom Craghead were my best buds. The YRBM-20 was used in the 1990s at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) as a temporary workspace, mess, and duty berthing for ships that were drydocked there. When I was on the Carl Vinson (CVN-70), it was in drydock at PSNS from 1990 to 1993 and the Engineering, Weapons, and Reactor departments used it. It was tied up next to the drydock and we did all our work on the YRBM-20 since nearly every space on the carrier was being refurbished. I had no idea, until now, that the YRBM-20 was ever in Vietnam and had such an interesting history. Believe me, by the time I got to it, there was no beer bar and there were never any drinking parties, sad to say.

First of all thanks for doing all this work and setting this up for everyone. I have blocked out most of Vietnam. I was stationed in Danang for 3 months at the Naval Support Communications Center. I was then transferred to PBR Mobile Base One. Took me several days to find it. I bummed rides and whatever. Stayed at a SeaBees camp one night on the way there. Don't have a clue where that was. I was a Radioman 3rd class. PBR Mobile Base One was called "Curveball" and we were located in a cove. I remember one Sunday we had about 67 helicopters land on beach, sanddunes, and on our helo pad that held one to join us in our great meal. They mostly be 101st airborne and knew where to get a great meal. There was a fire on beach where some Army guys got burned up and our guys put out fire and got bodies out but too late. Believe this happened October 1970. We turned over everything to the South Vietamese and our barges, PBR's, and Mike 8 Boat were towed seaside. We went down the coast and our destination was Danang Harbour. This was about a month before I came home in April 1971. Like any information available from all Vietnam Vets - Army, Navy, Marines, etc. that were there during 1970-1971. I be from Charleston, WV and thankful for any help.

I arived at Nha Be very soon after the first tent was put upin '66, while the sand was still being pumped off the bottom of the river. Did most anything the CO wanted and mainly did PBR repairs at night. Finished up my tour as a boat engineer for the SEAL TEAM'S mike boat up to the day it was struck by a mortar. If anyone remembers me please write. I would very much like to hear from any of the team that were aboard on that day. I was aboard for the med-evac and the air strike afterwards but have no knowledge of how the many wounded made out. If anyone can fill me in please contact me. I remember all the faces but can only remember two names: Commander Mac and an Engineman Chief, I believe his last name was Ruth. I think the Base CO's name was LT. Bayer. I have some pics of the MSB that was cut in two, if any in that group is interested. Best wishes and Welcome Home to all of you!..........Jack Bender EN2

Also, anybody onboard the LST Garrett County who took in RIVSEC 522. 2. Also was onboard the LST at the end of Jan 68 when we transited to Vinh Long to rescue the RIVSEC trapped in the Comm Center. 3. Departed Mekong Delta in July 68. I knew what the PBRs were, but I had no idea what you did or to the extent of your task. I have enjoyed my reading about the Brownwater Nave and your site has caused a hunger for more information. Thanks, Bubba. I can finally look at where all the stuff happened without going blitzo, if you know what I mean. I visited the Vietnam Memorial Wall in DC last Summer for the first time. It helped to get rid of some hostilities I have carried for many years. I am currently involved in a web-page site for POWs/MIAs and it is very time consuming gathering information but well worth the effort. We cannot allow ourselves to forget those who have not yet come home. Thanks again for the refresher course.

Our cutter was not the one involved in that horrible friendly fire incident on 18 May of '70, but I still get sick thinking about it. We had been there from 17 April to 10 May. We ran a Medcap at the end of April, and I understand that the Petty Officer who was killed was the skipper of the boat that took us up river for that evolution. I loved the Web Pages. Brings back so many memories. I was with a V.N. RID Tangos Alfas a Monitor and a CCB. We Had four boats sunk. Two were sunk at the floating dock at solid anchor. one tango, on the Ci Nap at the VC grave yard, the alfa on twin blooby river. You had a shot of two of our damaged alfas backed on the beach at solid anchor. Does any one remember the brick kilins across the river, or the old french fort that was covered over for the runway. I spent 26 years with no one to talk to who knew any thing about the boats, or would beleive, any thing about them. I would like to here from others who were there.

I traveled the Delta as a Teletype repairman for STRATCOM from OCT 68- OCT 69. I had several occasions to visit the offshore barges at Chau Doc. I went out for a beer with some Navy fellows I met at the old french hotel where we had a detachment and they took me out to the big barge on a minesweeper. I also flew in on a Sea Wolf that was just giving me a lift from Moc Hoa. I got a tour of the boat and you Navy guys treated me well while I was there, its a bit belated but thanks. My brother Dean Alley worked for "Alaska Barge and Transport, Inc." Company during the Vietnam war. He was the Captain of a Seagoing Tug. In a letter from him to my sister Lois Kibby dated June 19, 1967 from Singapore he said that I have been working on the Saigon River and the Mecong River Delta for the past month. When he wrote the letter he was in Singapore and his Tug was in Dry Dock undergoing some needed repairs. He estimated that they would be finished with the repairs by the end of June,1967. I would like to know the date Dean arrived and left the war. Also the name of the Tug and the places of operation Verle Dean Alley, was born March 24, 1927 and died July 5, 1974 Thank you, Murlin whip[ at ]nctimes.net

A Nha Be website ? Amazing! Great work, Kent, and thank you.
I was in Nha Be as a Teletype operator (CYN3) during the buildup from a tent compound to a base.
My time there seems to have pre-dated that of most other visitors to the site.
Anyone else out there from the early days?
