That Thanksgiving night 1967, I just went on the Mid watch on the bridge and shortly after midnight I heard the call for assistance to help the YRBM 16. We immidately went to General Quarters and made the transit up river on a ship that was 327' in almost pitch black darkness. We were all affraid that we were heading into an ambush but made it safely there to the scene to help put the fires out. If you were on board the Hunterdon County 1967-1968 Please feel free to e-mail me. NOTE TO WEBMASTER: PLease correct spelling of Hunterdon County in the YRBM 16 Article. My Father flew B-17's in WWII, B-29's in Korea, and B-52's in Viet Nam, I dare some flag burning ass-wipe to ask his permission to desecrate our flag. I was present during the fall of Saigon, standing off-shore aboard the Hewes taking on refugees flying out to us in anything that would fly, let them ask one of those people about burning the flag. Finally, let them ask me. Thanks for maintaining this site, I've always had an interest in the River Rats. You guys did a great job, thanks for your service and your sacrifice. Comments: Well,I've seen the pages;and they look good;however-where are the LSMR's??-They had the fire power of 7 destroyers( Rocket Boats) They were a laugh a minute going up rivers(inset chuckle here). The White River had several names of affection from the crew A.K.A."The Binjo Maru" The Rocket Rain Maker" The laugh a minute boat...why there was nothing more fun than a pleasant day going 25 to 30 clicks up a river;getting stuck on a sandbar, meeting the friendly folk of the jungle(V.C) and killing them. I mean major....."FIRE FOR EFFECT" here. were not talking zapping one or two zips..nah!!! this is major stuff;Wipe out,The White River A.K.A."The RAT" caught two N.V.A. regular division off guard.they fired on us after the Mark 7's 10s and 12s began raining on them.(they all went to Buddah that day) great fun;and no bic!!! you had to see them in action...a big light show."Like the song of the times said(Song=river),a real song."What the world needs now is more LSMR's,that's the only thing there's just too little of."I was fire control from 68-70(so I know as I was dialing in the grids),up and down Nom, from I Corp to 4 Corp to Phoc Quac(great Noum Marm sauce-yum!) to the Cantho(cannot) and up the D."Hey kids what time is it?"I always remember that poster hanging in the barracks at Yokosuka,(slept there while in the yards) It said; "Join the Navy; Go to far away exotic lands;see interesting and unusual vegetation; meet interesting and different people and...............kill them...So make the pages complete...get some LSMR's in there.....and remember if their dead their V.C.I know our fearless Leader...Lieutenant j.g(junior god) Bonaparte said so. I can't tell you how much it means to me to see the photos of the chou doc -tan chou area since I spent a good part of the year there. I even recognized the the river bank where the A boat was sunk near the rvn outpost, we were the first boat up that canal in 1967 when that outpost was over run the night before. This picture must have been taken around Jan. '70 because I can remember being on the fantail shortly after super and one of your mess cooks dumped a can of trash & garbage off your stern and about 4 to 5 local civilians dugout boats, with make shift nets, started scooping this junk up. We had to use the high pressure fire hoses to keep them away from the ships because it was during the Tet offence and we were under orders not to dicharge our weapons unless we were fired upon. We were attached to COMLANSHIPRONTWO (command landing ship squadron two) and based out of Vung Tau at AB&T (Alaska barrage & transport) compound where we would beach the ship, open the bow doors, lower the tank ramp, & take on supplies.I hope to see more pictures, since I did not take any during my tour (I could not imagine anyone ever wanting to remember those days) and for that I am sorry. Would like to hear from my shipmates (it's been so long - can't even remember the names :-{ ). God Bless the USN!!!!!

I cross rated to steelworker in the Seabees after I left Nam. I retired as a Senior Chief Steelworker in 1988 but I will always be a river rat in my heart. Until our Stab boats arrived in country in early 70 I worked with the Duffle Bag unit out of Thuy Nhon and rode Tangos, Alphas, PBRs. and Army air boats up around FOB GettysBurg where the seals were making a man made canal joining the Vam Co Tay and the Van Co Dong using det cord. After Duffle Bag I went on 99 patrols with Riv Div 512 PBRs. When my boat arrived in country I was ready to operate thanks to the men I served with in the above mentioned units. I think that was a major factor in my coming back home in one piece physically. My heartfelt thanks to all the River Rats, Seawolfs, Seal teams, Army recon and Marine Recon I had the pleasure to operate with. You are all heroes in my books. Thanks again for a great web page.
