Navy Lieutenant Dale Myrekord was adviser to the Vietnamese navy's 30th River Assault Group (RAG) based at Vinh Long in 1964 and 65. He was killed in an ambush of his small boat party near Sa Dec on March 16, 1965. The 3d Battalion, 15th Regiment of the 9th ARVN Division was searching for the attackers on March 17 (Saint Patrick's Day) when we were diverted to a fight on the north side of the Mekong River. The unit that attacked Myerkord's patrol had crossed the river in the dark and was attacking an outpost. The 15th Regiment and the 30th RAG from Vinh Long surrounded the 261st VC Main Force Battalion and tried to eliminate it. The enemy unit held us of funtil dark when they were able to escape in sampans. The 114th Aviation Company (US) from Vinh Long provided airlift to the battle area, and aerial fire support.

Update from previous entry when I was looking for John Thibadeau, Boat Captain of T-131-7. I was able to find the entire crew of T-131-7 and we had a rip roaring reunion in Nashville TN Oct. of 2003. Even had an opportunity to get the records corrected; John (BM1) in-country retired as as CWO3 and lives outside of Knoxville TN. He and Lt. Kahn re-submitted the paperwork from the firefight on the Giao Hoa Canal when I was hit & Zeph Lane HM1 onboard as we were the MedEvac boat that day. Zeph was critical, penetrating wounds of the brain, sucking chest wounds, severe shrapnel wounds in his lower legs, ankles. I was hit in the face arms, hands and blown against the fwd. ramp. To shorten this, I performed an emergency tracheotomy, used battle dressings on Zeph's Chest wounds. He was going into such severe shock that I couln't pry his jaw open; The Trach was the only way to get him some air. Smitty came down & assisted as did Thibadeau. To complicate matters the shrapnel set off a fire in the well deck when it blew (fear of secondary explosions, etc. and further damage) So when I jumped up I beat out the fire, & brought it under control--then turned full attention to HM1 Lane. I never thought, no time for thinking-just reacted. The VC, etc. hit us w/AW B-41 rockets-3 on our boat, one passed through, one hit below the gun turrents and the third hit a steel post holding up the flight deck & and rained shrapnel everywhere. Lucky it was just me & Zeph. When the Chopper got there we were still under fire-Thibadeau and I carried HM1 Lane to the Dustoff, I refused to go & returned to my 50 cal. to reak havoc against the enemy positions. On 28 February, 2005 in the Capital Courtyard, Tallahassee Florida I was Awarded the Silver Star with Extraordinary Heroism for actions that 31st day of March 1969 (over 35 years ago). The MRF was all great no exceptions, great young men who grew old together in a hurry. Thanks to Lt. William Kahn, CWO3 John Thibadeau, and most of all to the expert medical personel that treated Zeph at Long Binh 21st Evac, Yakooska NH, and Bethesda, Md. We never thought he'd make it with the severe, critical wounds. It was truely a MIRICLE and the fight Zeph Lane had, his will to survive. I regret but one thing, our last conversations were on that canal deep in the jungle of Vietnam where we shared so much. Zeph was back from R&R exactly 2 weeks and had been married in Hawaii to his "Bobbie"...only to return to COMBAT...Zeph went on to recover and become a flight surgeon, living on the edge...as was I. We never were able to hook up after that fateful day on the Giao Hoa Canal 3/31/69~Zeph was killed flying a private plane in 1985, leaving behind two beautiful daughters, and a loving family. Jamie (who was in Tallahassee for the Awards Ceremony) and Kim who's started her own family in Arizona. H. Bruce McIver P.O. Box 528 Tallahassee, Fl 32302 raid72macvnag[ at ]aol.com Many Thanks to Smitty, Bernbeck, Watts, Parker, Bell, Thibadeau and Lt. William Kahn. My prayers go out to Zephs wife, Bobbie, his Mom and two daughters, Kim and Jamie Lane. And his brothers that worshiped Zeph, Peter & Brian. I'm looking foward to a "family reunion" with all of Zephs wonderful family...hopefully in the next year or so.... The Ceremony on 28 February would not have been complete without Jamie, John Thibadeau and Ron Smith. God Bless and may God Bless America............Bruce McIver

Operations Yeoman, was HSAS then changed to NSAS. Was there when the planning and building of bases in Mekong Delta supporting Swift Boat bases. Remember well the officer who joking came up with Air Cofat. We had offices in the Cofat compound in Cholon. This is the compound where the PX and Commissary were located. At the time we had 2 C-47s 1 C-45 and a HU16. We considered the HU16 a jinx as it had a habit of shooting craps and leaving the aircrew stranded somewhere. The most memorable time was when a crew were taking it to the Phillipines for a 30 hour maintenance check when both engines quit and had to be landed in open ocean dead stick. The Navy pulled the Oklahoma City off line to rescue the air crew and take the Hu16 under tow until the seaplane tender Norton Sound could get there from the PI. Seeing as how we hauled passengers and freight just like a airlines Air Cofat seemed like the proper name for us. Air France and Air Vietnam were already taken.

Thank you! I like your site very much ! Sincerly yours, Inzest

Not much to tell, volunteered for that crap. Wanted to save the world I guess. Started in lighterage and started volunteering for runs to Dang Ha and Hue with supplies from Red Beach II. Harbour patrol and a couple coastal runs. Talked with the Seals a lot that were with us at the APLs, all great guys. Then I found out about the rivers. Volunteered and was attached to the Third Marine unit on the Song Thu Bon river at a place called CP Bravo 3. That was just across the river from CP Hotel 6 and mabe 3 clicks up river from Charley Company. I guess later that area was known as Liberty Bridge, but no bridge when I was there. We were direct support for the Marines there. My job was boat engineer and bow machine gunner. I was there on the river for seven and a half months. It was a happen place! We lost Vinnie there and he drifted down river, we couldn't get to him. Can't remember the name of the Boatswains mate on our crew but we had an officer with us Ensign Young. Wonder what ever happened to him. (Good Guy) Well this part of the story goes on forever.... but better end for now. By the way Vinnie was Vincent Ramires of Calif. He was just as Gung Ho as I was. He was a river rat and was on a beach during the tet offensive and recieved shrapnel in his leg while trying to jump onto his boat, as it was pulling away. Luckily he made it. He was honorablly discharged from the army I believe sometime in 1974, while at Fort Dix. I am desparately trying to find any information on him becaused he passed away 7 years ago. His name is Verny Green, I do not know his the name of his unit. I only know the name "River Rats" because he had a yearbook. I would love to hear from anyone who knew my father or served with him. Arrived "in-country" in March of 1967. Spent a few days in Saigon going through some kinda preparations...then "trucked" down to Cat-Lo. Just a young boy at the time and thought my world had came to an end! (SOME KINDA senior trip!) My General Quarter "war crimes" there was an M-79 Grenade Launcher(an excellent duck hunting gun) Got me a letter of commendation from Gen W.C. Westmoreland. Goes with my other"gee dunk" medals! lol, again! Worked in the engine shop there for some time over-hauling those 12 V 71's. Am suffering with c.m.s.(can't remember [ at ]#%[ at ]&) Stood guard duty at the Main Gate, The North Gate, The River Tower(all nighters), and The "stupid" water tank gauging episodes tower watch!( seems as if our calm or north wind brought in a horriffic aroma of nuck mam)sp.-5 points I did such a "good" job over hauling engines they gave me a field promotion to 3rd Class Electrician's Mate!Go figure! So we worked over the electrical systems of all those fine river boats too! One memorable experiance was when we kept "missing" our battery acid concoctions. Then we were asked by our Vietnamese leaders if we had any rubber gloves, as their men were getting battery acid burns!! Ha! Ha! lol.. I remember MANY trips to Vung-Tau getting shit-faced! Thanks for the memories guys! God Bless you ALL! Would love to hear from anybody around while I was there in'67-'68! Oh! Yeah! Does anybody remember Smidley the Australian Shepard? Or how about the camp monkey? (REAL MONKEY) He drank plenty 'o beer at the EM Club! Before doing the"in- country" thing we did two opperations abourd The U.S.S. Came on board after the ship returnned from Singapre R&R. Served on board as ship's photographer as OM2, attached to R2 division. Had two beer bardges alongsides to lift and repair PBRs etc. Left Nha Be under heavy escort, down river to Vung Tau for 2 wks. before riding out a typhoon en route to Subic Bay where we were decommisioned and prepared for transfer to the Tiawanise Navy. Spent a month in Subic, then on to Kaoshung Tiawan for a month, changing over to the Taiwanise Navy, then flying out to Taipei, and on to a harassed landing in Tacoma Wa. Had five guys on the ship from the Pittsburgh area, and many old memeries.

We served with pride with our accurate NGFS. Sometimes we were on NGFS teams 1 and 2 spending 12 on and 12 off. Other times we were at general quarters. Once we spent 32 hours at general quarters. Our call sign was Grand Opening and we responded to the resquest of spotters:Wolf Man 1, Wolf Man 2, Killerman 1 and Killerman 2. There was 9 ships assigned to a flagship that gave the assigned missions. Our 5"/54 gun was the most up to date and often spotters called upon Grand Opening by request because of our accuracy. Our maximum range was 15 miles with an effective range of 13 miles. Everytime we fired a mission in daylight we received counter battery from enemy forces. Sometimes we were in so close that small arms fire could have reached us. We received shrapnel in our BPMDS tubes from air burst. We fired H&I missions most of the night. We onloaded ammo practically everyday. Some of our targets were 12 and 13 miles inland, so we had to position ourselves very close to land. When we left the Gunline we normally went to the Gulf of Tonkin to escort AirCraft Carriers. Once we spent 63 days underway. We anchored in DaNang Harbor on the 28th of April and 29th July in 71. Ships were not allowed to remain in harbor when nightfall came. I feel we should be considered as brownwater Navy due to our service on Freedom Train. I owe my life to Captain Henry our CO, because of his brave performance under tremendous pressure. He had a lot of expeirence under various commands in Vietnam. I left Larry Mckee in Vietnam and GMG2 McKee came back to Arkansas. I have never spent one day with out thinking of Vietnam. I suffer from major depression, anxiety, chronic PTSD, and have 3 diseases generated by Agent Orange. The Good Lord keeps me going from day to day. God Bless all you Nam-Vets out there and I hope you find comfort in the Lord.

C'mon guys! If there had been this many of us at Hue during TET in 68, "Charlie" wouldn't have lasted 30 minutes. Our ramp was down at the LCU ramp when the shit hit the fan and all I saw was a few marines telling me to get out into the river before "Charlie got lucky". I still had about a half a well deck of ammo left and ended up taking it back out to the USS Tripoli. I had to live with the thought that a lot of the bodies we brought out the next two weeks were my fault until two years ago when I got the Tripoli's Deck Logs from the National Archives in D.C. The "choppers" took the ammo right back in within an hour after we offloaded it. If any of you are looking for proof for any of your claims all of the dailys and deck logs are in D.C. Along with command reports and yearly reports. I just got 50% PTSD with 9 years backpay because of finding the proof I needed in various deck logs. Anyway.... Had good food though and really good fresh bread. Used to trade for that bread. Hope to hear from you all soon. I was with India Company 3/9 and enjoyed working with the sailors on board the ship. Another operation we were on was LAM SON 719 which was a secret mission for along time. I know we were surpose to make a beach landing but was cancled due to our other units taking out the MIG'S and the Air Strip of the NVA. The NVA was building up to push down south against the Marines. When the NVA got word that Marines were going to land on the beach they pulled back. Well thanks allot and hope to hear from you. I ran across this site while looking for my old friend Terry Manton. Sadly I found him but too late. He passed away in June of 2002 at the young age of 54. We attended Gunner's Mate Shool, trained togther, and served together on the same patrol. All in all we spent the better part of two years as friends and brothers which is quite a feat in the active Navy considering all the tranfers taking place at that time. I guess this is more of a remeberence of Terry more than of Vietnam. We were known as the "golddust twins" during training and while seving on the boats. I never could figure out why we were called that but we definitely were connected at the hip. Where I was, he was near by and vice versa. While in Vietnam we were Fox patrol and spent many a long night out on those rivers. While there were the bad times the thing I remember most were the times he and I spent getting into trouble together. Like the time he shot a hole in the side of the boat while unloading the Remington which came right after I did the same thing with the M-16 the day before. I wonder how we survived each other never mind the war. I could go on and on with stories of "Terry and me" but I can only say this. Terry was my best friend in the service. Without him being around I don't think I'd have made it. We looked out for each other not only in Vietnam but before going there. When things got tough it was his sense of humor that kept us all going. He was a quiet man except when he felt he was wronged. He had honor never hesitating to step up in defense of the "little guy." Terry, I will miss you.

After we returned, we and the YTB 784 moved "Sea Float" into place and also moved barges up to the Camobian border later on. The 784 went to Subic for an overhaul and never came back. I served with several boat captains and Chief Flaradeau was there when I left country. I served with A LOT of really great, hard working guys. It was an experience I'll never forget. I still have a lot of photos of the boat and various parts of the Mekong. There are also photos of the freighter that hit a mine near the tank farm by Nha Be and sank near our base. Arrived incountry as RMSN, stayed at Annapolis BEQ, then to Cat Lo, worked in comm shack. Sent to Nha Be to learn begining teletype repair. Back to to Cat Lo, Sent tad to ATSB Go Dau Ha. Went with Army convoy that dropped me off at Go Dau Ha. Worked in communication trailor there. It was air conditioned. Cooks there set fire to mess barges on a regular basis. Navy finally built us a new chow hall/kitchen. Remember the outhouse, bullet holes and all. Zippo boat came by one day to burn off the field in front of us. Concrete bridge over the river destroyed before I got there. Temporary bridge was in use then. Did mail runs to Cu Chie and Saigon PBR's went into Cambodio while I was at Go Dau Ha. Finally went back to Cat Lo to finish tour. Had a puppy named Garble for a little while at Cat Lo. Went back to the states assigned to ACU-2 in Little Creek. Was on LCU 1611 and put LCU 1653 in service. Got out of the Navy for about year and half. Went back in and retired as DSC(SW) in November of 90

I was a En2 aboard Askari from late 69 until 70. I replaced a En1 by the name of Hanson as LPO of the inside engine shop. Remember the MSR-7 and have some pictures of the boat before and during its reconstruction. I would like to hear from any of my old shipmates and and any information on what happened to Chief Robbie and CWO4 Perkins. Mr. P got me out of Nam 4 months early--won't ever forget that.
