I have been trying to locate information about my Fathers tour in Vietnam. The pictures I have posted on the web page are the only pictures I know of he had taken wile in Vietnam. His specialty was minsweeping and when he shipped out to Vietnam, he was stationed in Charleston, SC. Rich, and others hae pointed me to this web site for additional references and information and I am grateful for this great site. I'm hoping to find someone who worked with or knew my Dad so I can see the types of things he faced day to day while in Vietnam. He never really talked much about his tour there after coming back home. He passed away December 31, 1977 from cancer. My only regret so far is that it took me this long before I started looking for more information about his service. I want to thank all of the Vietnam veterans for your service to this great republic we live in. If it were not for your sacrifices, and the sacrifices of others, we would not be enjoying the freedoms we have today. I salute you all and wish the very best for you and your families. MY STORY IS ABOUT HOW WELL WE DID EXCEPT, MAY 18, 1970 AT 0400 HOURS. SONG ON DOC CALLED FOR GUNFIRE SUPPORT 20 MILES TO THE NORTH OF THE BASE. I WAS IN THE 5"38 GUN MOUNT ABOARD THE SHERMAN. THE BASE WAS AT THE SAME LONG/LAT FOR A LONG TIME. WE KNEW WERE THEY WERE AND IN NO WAY SHOULD WE HAVE FIRED, YET I, WE WERE ORDERED TO FIRE. AFTER TEN ROUNDS, CEASE FIRE ECHOED THU OUT THE SHIP AND MY BIGGEST FEARS ENTERED MY MIND. I HAD MEET SOME OF THE GUYS AT THE BASE AND SHARED PHOTO,S OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS. THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW, I'AM SENDING THE ROUNDS TO END THEIR LIFE. AFTER THEY WERE HIT THEY WERE AIR LIFTED TO OUR SHIP, BECAUSE WE HAD A DOCTOR ABOARD. WE HAD TO CARRY THE DEAD AND WOUNDED BELOW DECKS TO SICK BAY. I CANT TELL YOU HOW SICK I FELT. I THOUGHT OF THAT NIGHT FOR 30+ YEARS AND WILL NEVER BE THE SAME. THE CREW WAS SO UPSET THAT THE ONLY WAY WE COULD PROTEST WAS TO STOP OUR SAVINGS BONDS. THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW WE WERE CALLED TO OUR DEPT'S AND TOLD THAT IF WE DIDN'T STOP THIS PROTEST AND RETAKE THE BONDS THEIR WOULD BE HELL TO PAY. TO ALL THAT I HURT AND KILLED I WILL LIVE WITH THIS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. I JUST WISH THAT THEIR WAS SOMEWAY TO END THE PAIN FOR ALL OF US. Hello, The company I was with (D Co.,3rd Recon Bn out of Quang Tri) was taken to Cua Viet in mid-1969 to run night ambushes for a month. We pitched tents in the old amtrac area across the river from the r & r center. We were taken from the dock area by outboard skimmer or PBR and inserted upriver at dusk. 4 man teams were normal. We were picked up and brought back to base in the morning. One morning, after picking up all of the teams, our boat hit a river mine and sank. The accompanying boat stood off and watched/waited to see if there was more to come. We saw some civilians on a hill overlooking the river, but nothing further happened (although I learned that I could, indeed, tread water). After what I think was about 15 to 20 minutes (but seemed like several hours), the other boat began picking us up. All of our gear and weapons were lost. I remember several weeks later after divers had recovered the weapons, they were give to us to clean before turning back in. Can anyone fill in more of the story? I don't remember the date, or even the month for sure. Warm regards to all from Oregon. Bill Moore

Highlights of the tour included CI School and jungle escape and evasion training in the snow at Camp Picket in Virginia; transiting the Panama Canal; crossing the Pacific Ocean all ahead flank at 10 knots; painting the ship olive green; TET Offensive; guiding dust-offs to landing on the flight deck, to name a few. This a strange request to ask you guys that where with the PBRs. My name is mike spurr, I was in the army, not the navy. My unit was assigned to the PBRs , in june of 1969. There were 3 PBRs and there was about 12 of us in my unit ( Alpha co. 2/28th Inf. reg. 1st Inf. Div. BLACKLIONS ) We were on an operation, and our platoon leader told us that we were picked to patrol the song be river with 3 PBRs .We approched a river and there were 3 PBRs waiting for us. They split us guys up between the three PBRs , I was picked to be on lead PBR and to sit to the left of the twin 50s. so there were 4 army and the navy crew on each boat.We would patrol with the navy during the day and at nite they would drop us at shore and we would go in the jungle, seek the enemy and set ambushes. The next morning we would radio the PBRs and the would come and pick us up. I have pictures of the boats , but I dont Know what navy unit we were assigned too. I went to san diego to see the PBR they have on display ,It was great to see that boat after all these years. If any of you guys were on that operation , please get back with me. It might have been a tributary of the song be river. I know they airlifted those boats by ch47s to that small river. Thank you MIKE

You have a great site! I was assigned to provide ground security on the east bank with 27 CIDG, a mechanic (Mop), an interpreter (Be), 2 SF NCOs , and 1 SF Officer from Det. A-415, Thuyen Nhon, RVN. I arrived on August 12,1970 and participated in 2 search and clear missions, 1 night ambush, and 1 raid during which I was wounded and MEDEVACed on August 23, 1970 (SP5 Raymond S. Bramwell, KIA). I request your permission to use your photos of SEAFLOAT, river craft, and weapons, etc. Question 1: Who was your NILO (Naval Intelligence Officer) at that time (I don't remember his name). Question 2: Who was the Seawolf M-60 Gunner on August 23, 1970 at 1045 hours? He fired a burst right at me on the first pass--thankfully, he missed: I had a hell of a time getting the troops not to fire in self defense and shoot Seawolf down during the second pass. Believe me, it wasn't easy (I was bleeding like a stuck pig, my buddy was KIA, I had 3 CIDG WIA, my radio was kaput, and we were in contact with VICTOR CHARLIE). Question 3: Who were the MEDEVAC guys (ARMY)? A BIG THANK YOU to the guys on the PBR who pulled us out; A big THANK YOU to the guys who got off that boat and carried out my buddy on a litter, I thought for sure that guy with the AK got you, but lo and behold you got back up! I happened to be going up the Qua Viet River on the way to Dong Ha aboard YFU76, or LCU 1576, my memory doesn't serve me as to which one when the YFU62 was mined. She was headed down River from Dong Ha and we were headed up River from Qua Viet. We were looking at her from about a hundred yards away, when she hit the mine. White water shot out on eather side of her stern,. and a muffled metalic sound was heard, unlike the deafening sound effects of a movie. She sunk down in the stearn until bottoming out in the river, with 2/3 of her still above the water. There was no movement on board, as I'm sure that everyone was dead. We were ordered back down river, and told to anchor in the river until further sweepboat mine clearing operations were completed. Some Army or Marine APC's gave assistance to the boat. After 3 to 4 hrs. the river was declared free of mines and we were ordered to start upriver again. Guess Charlie didn't get the message, as a Mike 8 boat hit another mine further up river on the way down from Qua Viet. This was all & all my worst day in Vietnam. I do have a picture taken the next day of the 62 sitting sunk in the river. I thought to myself, that this is getting serious, as I always blocked out worrying about the one that would get me. When you look out on a cargo of over 100 tons of blackpowder and projectiles you have to block it out to maintain, sone semblance of sanity. I would like to hear from anyone that was stationed at Cua Viet, with the Mike Boats LCM's, or the SeaBees, there was some fine guy's. I (Gerry Lee) was on the LCM-8#397 untill it went to DaNang for a complete over/ then we ran a LCM-6#33 that was outfitted for sweeping, Then took over a LCM-8# (The Blatter Boat). Would love to talk to someone who was there when the 62 was hit, or the night the Zappers came through the swimnet, and put charges on us, or right after the Jersey pounded the shit out of Northern country, a little Island called "TIGER Island", And then shortly after, the LCM-8#(Lets Not say) Mr.B took His crew to Tiger to pick up suveniers for all His Friends back home, and got His crew all killed! If anyones out there, that remembers these things, You remember Me!,they called Me Captnice, I was only a gunners mate,But That's Another Story! I was one of the 380,000s! Thanks For The Memorys, as Oh Bob would say!

I spent one year working down at the shipyard in DaNang harbor where we worked mainly on LCM's and occasionally a "spook" boat as we called them (a fast moving, iron plated, armed to the teeth) kick-ass fighting machine would come in for repair. I worked on the boats for about half of my tour then when the mail orderly rotated back stateside I was given the job as company mailman. This job consisted of me going to the airport daily picking up mail and dropping it off at not only our base but also several other camps. I remember one of them was Camp Horn (USS Army). Made friends with some soldiers that lived on a water tower right below the giant tank of water. Would go visit at night and watch the war go on. They flew helicopters. I got to make a flight or two with them, man that was interesting. Made alot of friends over there but as time passes the names are no longer with me and the faces are fading. I played on the Navy's traveling flag football team. We were a very good team with an excellent black quarterback who could throw the ball a long way and I was his favorite receiver and was known as white lighting because of my speed. Think his name was Williams but that is only a guess. We were a great pass and catch combination. I also threw horseshoes out front of our barracks with the guys while drinking statside beer. All was not rosy because work consisted of alot of long hours in the hottest climate I have ever been in doing some of the nasty work imaginable. If the conditions were not bad enough there was the siren that when it went off you made a mad dash for the bunker. You never knew if "charlie" was accurate with his aim on his "Bottle Rockets" as we called them only these rockets packed a rather lethal explosion. I remember one of the Chief's was on something like his fifth tour of duty. I do not know if he did not like his wife or if he prefered the mama-soons and the weed. However, he took his job serious and took care of us boys and he was a good man. My experience was great and I am thankful to our Lord Jesus Christ for bringing me home in one piece.

I arrived in Saigon in December 1970, Stayed at the "Annapolis" hotel until I got order for Solid Anchor. I arrived before Xmas to enjoy Christmas with Admiral Zumwalt. There was a Chief with a beard down to his chest and they didn't want him to appear, but he did and Zumwalt made the comment, "that's the greatest beard I have ever seen!" We did not have a mortar platoon when I arrived. I was attached to a group of "Volunteers" to train with the Marine Lt. and the "Gunny" Sgt to learn how to plot targets, align "aiming" stakes, and fire the Mortars. We had four 81mm and two 60mm mortars. We built ammo bunkers for each mortar and place stationary 'base plate' for them, made out of 50 gal barrels (cut in half) and railroad ties that surrounded the barrels. The mortar base plates were placed inside and dug into the sand. This allowed us to continually fire, without the plates sliding. [We had gone through aligning our position with the aiming stakes (set on magnetic north by compas)every 3 or 4 times we fired.] We were able to hit most targets after the first shot of WP when foward observers would call in and redirect our coordinates to the target. We shot H&I every night, with thousands of mosquitoes biting us. After we built the mortar pits, we got hit by a mortar attack and I was running to get to the pits to fire back with shells falling all around me. Normaly while under attack of mortar and rocket fire, the sappers are working there way through the concetina wire amd we had claymore set up with trigger mechanisms. I had to get to the mortar pit to set off the claymores and begin firing toward the target provided from the firestation Hdqtrs. It didn't last long, especially when the 'BLack Ponies from Ben Tuei arrived and begain diving with there 20 mm mini guns blazing. After the first instance, we all slept at the motar pits and eventually built a shack out of mortar boxes filled with sand for protection. We had Arvn counterparts we trained and had some occasions to go out with the Seal platoon to a couple of different villages searching for information. The landing craft we used was inforced with 8 inch of steel, armored with two mini guns on each side, one 50cal on each side, with an 81 mortar on the bow and a 105 recoiless on top. Quite a floating fortress. I have fond memories of all I served with, Delberta, Pinson, Larsh, Fisher, and others name I dont recall offhand. but a great bunch of guys and very professional.

I am requesting information on Navy and Marines that served on board the U.S.S. Westchester CTY LST 1167 in November 1970- March 1971. I would like to know how many have Type-2 diabetes and if any have cancer or other diseases. I know it's so hard to find all who was a board the ship in these times but sure would like to hear from as many as I can. We were all part of a good team in those day's and lived a board the ship in a good and frindly mander even if we were Sailors and Marines. THE food was pretty good and the ship wasn't that bad for what the ship had been through. I was with India Company 3/9 and enjoyed the ship and allot of the crew. I remmber the liberty in Hong Kong when the two planes crashed into the mountain. I am putting together a list of all who was on board the ship and now have diseases. I was reading where the LST'S were given praise for comming up the rivers and getting supplies to those on the river. Some do not thank the Navy played a part in country Vietnam. Most ask were you on a Carrier. But to all who served on LST'S one would only have to serve on them ships to know how it really was. I thank all of you Navy Sailors for making my trips with you a good thing to remmber. And to all my fellow Marines I hope you also enjoyed our stay on board the LST. Ihope to hear from allot of you who are still out there today. Good Luck to ALL Of You. John Goldsburg.

I have contacted the Army Review Board to support my effort to get my medal. I received my 1970 medals in 2004. I E.T.S.ed upon arriving in Fort Lewis during a large protest. Paperwork did not come except a DD-214 which I could not read, and a Honorable Discharge that had me as a PFC instead of E-5. A surprize to me was they busted the wrong guy. I served on board the Westchester CTY LST 1167. We were picked up at Red Beach Okinawa in November 1970. During these times I had a good time aboard the ship. Sure would like to talk to some of the Sailors and Marines that was on board the ship in 1970-1971. Would like to know if there is any Sailors or Marines suffering any diseases that are on the Agent Orange list. The unit I was with was India Company 3/9. I still can't get out of my mind of seeing the big flashes going off on land in Vietnam. I also rember how quit it was one night when we were going what looked to be up a river and how quite it was and how it seemed to be so weary the way the what looked to be fog or just so weard. Please excuse my spelling. If any of you out there Sailors or Marines read this please drop a line. Would like to know if the ship ever took on water in Vietnam waters and how it was changed to drinking water and showers and such. Does anyone know about operation CUU LONG 44, while we were aboard? If this was put in Marines records was it put in Sailor records the same way? This information would be very inportant to me if one really does rember. I know we went to Subic Bay for liberty. And also went to Hong Kong. Thats where the jets buzzed the bridge and then crashed into the mountain. I thank the pilots did not make it. Rember choppers being dispatched to the mountain for remains of the pilots. Well if any of you can help out please e-mail me. SEMPER FI. John.

I TOOK MY WIFE TO SAIGON IN SEPT. 2004 NOT SURE IF SHE WOULD LIKE IT. SHE LOVED IT AND SO DID I. BECAUSE OF THAT WE ARE PLANNING TO GO BACK IN LATE MARCH. THIS TIME WE WILL BE VISITING HANOI, HALONG BAY, AND SAIGON (YES THEY STILL CALL IT SAIGON). SAIGON IS NOT AS SLEAZY AS IT WAS WHEN WE WERE THERE (SINCE I'M MARRIED I GUESS THAT'S GOOD - THE COMMUNISTS ARE SOMEWHAT PURITANICAL). I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND GOING BACK TO VIETNAM. IF YOU HAVE P.T.S. YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK WITH SOMEONE QUALIFIED BUT I HAVE READ THAT IT IS A GOOD THING TO RETURN. IF ANYONE IS PLANNING TO RETURN, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS OR IF ANYONE HAS BEEN THERE RECENTLY I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES AND SUGGRSTIONS. WHEN I WAS THERE IN 9/04 I WAS SURPRISED TO GO BACK WHERE I LIVED AND WORKED BECAUSE IT WAS STILL THERE. THE BILLETS I STAYED AT ARE NOW A PLASTICS FACTORY AND AN APARTMENT BLDG. COMNAVFORV HQ. IS NOW THE EMPOROR HOTEL, ETC. IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE ANY INFO FROM THE PLACES WE ARE VISITING SEND ME AN EMAIL AND I WILL TRY AND GET THE INFO FOR YOU. I was stationed in Dong Tam, but maintained communitcation equipment at the MACV and RVN compounds in My Tho, Go Cong, and Ben Tre. I remember the MACV compound at My Tho as a place that looked like it walked out of the movie Casablanca. Slow rotating ceiling fans and tile floors. You expected to see a short heavy set gentleman in a white suit come down the hall at any time. It had a real French air to it. Numerious times I had to take the fairy at My Tho to go to Ben Tre. We would have to wait to load the fairy on this jammed little market street. The market place was always jammed and made me feel uncomfortable just sitting in the Vietnamese crowded street waiting to load. And, the kids were all trying to sell you something or wanting something from you. On the trip across the river we went around the tip of what I believe was called "sniper island", and there was the wild looking Monk monastery on the tip of the island. Seems they called the Monk there the "Coconut Monk" because that was all he ate. The road on the other side of the river from My Tho to Ben Tre was always "Indian" country and on at least one occasion my vehicle, and almost myself were hit by sniper fire.

Hello Sirs, I am French and zippo collector, I am looking for information about Zippos. There are lot of fake PBR zippo for sale and when I ask the sellers they often answer " The PX/BX sent special order to local Vietnamese craftsmen to engrave zippo with etching process" I think is not the true, I know konwal or penguin lighters engraved for BPR soldiers. When you were looking for a zippo, did you go to the PX/BX and got one factory etched engraved or a blank and then you go to the nearest craftsman to have it engraved? Sorry for my bad English Have a nice day Regards, Robert

My story may not contribute anything new, but here goes. I served as an SK2 from April 1970 to March 1971. My first supply officer was D. K. Guinn Lt. Jr. grade. OIC was LT Fry. My next supply officer was Ensign Hillhouse. I do remember the hand grenade incident. I had recently reported aboard when that a flick was to be shown on the mess decks. I wanted a "good" seat so I sat all the way down in the front, before the movie began, this vietnamese walks in and has a frag granade and is getting ready to pull the pin. thank god to guys walk in behind him and pull him back out the hatch. I worked in the supply office next to sick bay, which was next to the radio shack. One day Lt. Fry decided to hold an inspection so the whole crew was I believe was on the flight deck, we all could have gotten wiped out rather easily. what I'm really trying to find out is all I can about the yrbm 21 itself. does anyone rember it's deminsions, where is it now? I stood Jr. officer of the deck watches, anybody know if the quarter deck logs still exist? Where was the conversion from ww2 oiler to yrbm done? the hull seemed rather thin. does anyone have any information about it's thickness. It was rumored to be only 1/4 inch thick. I was the whoused to shoot at objects in the water and throw granades mostly concussion at the bow. I'm trying to do a human interest story for our local newspaper. there is no money involved.
