Record 2999 Great site. Brings back memories. We had to come to Nha Be to Fuel our PBRs. Also dilivered one that was hit in Cat Lai to Nha Be on a Semi trailer. Also escorted the Acteon Fuel tanker when it was brought up river. It was always our boat's job to patrol that area when it was anchored. Often went on board and traded M-80s (yes firecrackers) for beer and steak. Spent alot of time in their bar. Anyway, thanks for the memories and welcome home.

Record 2998 Months ago I sent you my comments and rememberances of the BS that t0ook place aboard the YR 71 by all the racist people that ran the barge way back then. You didn't have the balls to print the truth or what took place. If you had a question all you had to do was ask some of my peers who served under Lt. Hunter and LTJG Salez. My peers would have supported what I reported to you. It was not all a bowl of roses as so many vets protray their time in country. This website is just a sellout like everything else that wants to cover up the truth of what really took place. You didn't even have the courtesy of responding to my previous email and thanking me for taking the time to correspond with you even though you could not submit my memories in the state that I recalled them. So you chose to ignore me and the truth altogether. Shame an all of you who maintain this website. I served honorably and was treated with dishonor by those in responsible positions above me. The truth is the truth whether you care to recognize it or not. Sugar coat it if it makes you feel better but the sugar coating is just a cover up for the lies and BS that really took place. I hope you can live with your denial of the truth and look in the mirror each morning and see the denial and deal with it each and every day for the rest of your lives. I am bitter about all I experienced while serving with you and your denial of it only enhances my sadness at your lack of intestinal fortitude. (for those of you who had trouble passing 4th grade - that means a lack of guts). Rolf Olsen YN2 YR 71 1970-1971.

Record 2993 Went to RVN Oct66 was stationed out of Nha Be when she was still tents, and a bunch of sand. Rode MSB11 for minron 11, BM1 Coleman, BMSN Whilloughby, the rest are just faces in my past. Numerous fire fights, & hairy moments sweeping for mines.Remember Tank farm on Long Tau & Saigon River getting hit, And the civilian tanker getting hit & sunk at the mouth of the Saigon River, And one of the boats bringing up the first command detinated 1000lb russian mine found on the Long Tau river. Base rocketed & mortared 6,7th,& 9th August 1966.Left for states side Dec 67......Just before the Party. Went to Vietamese Language School in 71 46 wks. Last class to go through Wash DC. went back incountry very few americans left we deployed with the Vietnamese. I rode Boston Whalers out of Quin Nhon. Great Boats, mounted M60 forward, with a few thousand rds in the void. And two xtra cases ammo, carried 3-4 cases of concussion grenades for the swimmers around the Korean Piers, and searching cove 1,2,3,with grenades, M60, and M79, I rounded the cove one night and a VN PBR had run aground & Charlies was having target practice with them. when I came around the bend there 50 barrels were so hot I could see them glowing in the dark.radio was not working, these were the only guns they had , and I suspected they fell asleep that is why they ran aground(I should have left them there) I scrambelled some american helos from the army base, and with my boat, & 2 Johnson 40's I & a ship mate 2nd class electrition Wilson from Philly, managed to keep them off there ass long enough by drawing there fire, while they all pushed the boat off the bar.And end the night patroling inside the Leper Colony at Trung Hung Dau 4. and of course a few Ba Muoi Ba's beire(Translates to beer 33)After 5 mths the Navy sent 8 advisors to Nam Can(BM,s & GM,s Mike Tatosian, Chuck Sgt. Rock Stark) in the delta on operation "Kibitser" our mission was to end the infaltration of NVA Regulars in to the delta by boat. This was done my setting up water born guard posts, ambushes, & patroling.....It was like the shoveling s--t against the tide.Very frustrating. I got myself in trouble with the VN Lt., for greasing some fisherman on the river at 0300 while we were heading down river to begin patrols(fisherman my ass). The American Commander(Name I cant remember but thanks) saw it my way and got me out of town as they wanted to courtmartial me.They sent me North to ThuanAn/Cua Viet with the VN Junks, ambushes, patrols, I stayed with them till Mar73 .This is the only time I felt safe while working with the VN's these men believed in the mission. And took no prisoners. I was proud to serve with these guys. They lived like pirates on the Missippi in the 1700's. I retired from the Navy as a GMCM in may 89 with 24 yrs. But these were some of my proudest moments.Have a fine Navy Day!

Record 2982 I was a member of the original crew of Operation Seafloat. Lived on the barges when they were anchored at Nha Be, then we were transported to the Song Cua Lon aboard the USS Crockett. I remember very well the dark morning when we were floated up the river courtesy of HCU-1, and Bosun Jernigan taking charge of getting us moored in the river. My job was as radioman/electronics tech in the "com van" aboard the barges. Lodge RM1, Whitley RM1, and Mooney RM3 were my co-workers, would like to hear from them or anyone who was a "plankholder" of Operation Seafloat. I remember a Swift boat sailor, his name was Penta, I can still see the name above the pocket on his new greens as we placed him in a body bag and loaded his remains aboard the seawolf. He had been in country for less than a week. Stepped on a mine.

I was the one who was held by a vietnamese sailor who thought I was sleeping with my female translater and he wanted a part of it. Held me at gunpoint on the messdeck for what seemed to me hours. Also was aboard helo that took the wounded steward off when the 21 was hit by rpg's in May 71 and was hit by shrapnel. The steward later re-enlisted at the AFEES I was stationed at in DetroitI was also the one who had to go out with the boat crew each time a floater came down river to ascertain if it was an American. Also took Bac, my interpreter, to her home down river every Sunday so she could visit her family.

Record 2954 I'm re-visiting to say thanks to all of you. Came to this site by accident, looking for any kind on information or help to jar my memories & help support my PTDS claim. Claim hasn't been settled yet but & that's not important now. What is ... all of you! We all came here for a purpose, some searching, some showing the way. We all hurt and feel the pain, and I'm so glad to have found this place. Each of you came and told a story as I also did. You took the time to hear mine and I read each & every one of yours. I found what I came looking for,... But found more than I thought possible, all of you. Many Thanks To All Of You!!! There are a few at the site I have to thank via email for they held the key for me. The last few weeks have been overwhelming for me & I just haven't got to them yet but I promise I will. And for you that haven't met Joe yet, Be very careful he's every where watching over us.
Something else I want to share, talk about strange. Dec 9,03 I sent a request to the Dept. of the Navy- Naval Historical Center, Washington D.C. trying to locate information. Never heard a word from them. An hour ago, almost a year later I receive a very large manila envolope, delievered by UPS, from the historical center. There's over a hundred pages here and just at a glance it's amazing. They have detailed from the time I was at Cua Veit, & Danang just about every rocket, mortor attack,... They know the how many, what size and what they hit, rather it was a jeep, boat, building, & etc.
I went down to the Delta To the USS NUECES & they sent acomplete history of it. I'm going to have days of reading & degesting information. Example did you know?... May 20, 69 six unknown rockets hit Cua Viet, destroyed the EM Club.
I'll get back with you & again thank you all..... Harold

Record 2950 Before in-country service: 1 yr at NAS Seattle and 1.5 yrs on USS Stoddard DD-566 (see www.ussstoddard.org) with one cruise to WestPac. Mostly did plane guard duty for America and Intrepid. Picked up debris from one flight deck crash. Also spent many days in gunfire support S. of the DMZ, threw over 5000 5" rounds. I was in mount 4.
After SERE in Coronado, transferred to a Ton Son Nhut org whose unit desig I can't recall except for "Det Charlie", and it was a liaison between USN and VNAF. Got to play captain's driver at night as Sr officers weren't allowed to drive their own cars. He was an F-4 pilot and I was told a superb one. I made BM3 while there. There was a PN1 named Mueller whom I didn't get along with too well, and an SA named Paige, can't remember any other names.
Next stop, late in the year, was Cam Rahn CTF-115. There were two jr officers who bought a pig just for fun, and raised it. Attention was received from high places, and it became a major project with lots of important visitors. Another BM3 had lots of farm experience, but disagreed with how the officers managed the farm so they tried to get me interested. I LOVE pigs - when they're cooked and carved on my dinner plate!! No interest at all in raising the filthy animals. There was one pig we named "'Boats" because he was cool. There was a BM1 who might have been named Donovan or something. There was a guy who loved classical music and even had training in conducting a symphony orchestra. Some of us spent time snorkeling in the coral reefs - what a gorgeous beach that was!
Took two month TDY to Sea-Float. From reading these accounts, I must have been there at the quietest time, but I have the most memories from that short stay. I stood watches at the 81mm mortars, and went out to cut tall trees that the helo drivers didn't like. One day, when I was NOT cutting trees, the other team was fired upon and had to beat it back to base. The helos went out and shot the place up, but I don't think the cong were ever located. Before the helos got up, we pounded with mortars. One of the rounds fell far short and exploded on the riverbank. I remember watching the round's trajectory in the air, it was so slow. It should have gone well OVER the "Chu-Lai" (not sure of spelling - the training camp for repatriated VC near the Sea-Bee base), but instead fell SHORT of it. THAT caused some excitement! The next day, my team went to the same area, and when we landed on the bank, I found the mortar's crater and the tail fins. I still have the fins as my best souvenir of Vietnam.
I remember the over-water latrines, cold showers (unless you were the FIRST that day, to take advantage of solar-heated pipes), mosquito nets on the bunks, and the night the Sea-Bee base was attacked. I actually slept through the gunfire and caught hell for it! That same BM1 was there - he could reem a sailor out very effectively! I remember the various boats and the Seal teams. I'm a big-time fan of the Seals, because I figure we'd all be dead without their patrols. I remember them returning from an ambush, and one of them beside himself with excitement for the thrill of mowing 'em down with his BAR. They once brought back some captured weapons, including a home-made mortar with the most humongous warhead I ever saw. I remember one of those tough blood-thirsty warriors at the dinner table, praying before eating, extremely intelligent and interesting to talk to.
I remember that a supply ship came with the reefer broken open, and tons of steak and lobster spoiled and tossed overboard. And I remember our evening meal always alternated between steak and lobster! Also that there were no "eatin' tools" available - my parents sent me a boyscout kit to eat with. And I remember a sailor tripped on the tripod leg of the $30,000 night vision scope and sent it to the bottom of the river. Poor guy, he sure caught hell! One of our snipers shot at some movement about a mile down the bank, and caught hell for shooting without permission - go figure. Oh, and there was the time the new OinC fell overboard.
One name I can remember is BM3or2 Navey, initials U.S.! He told a story about being sent to his first sea-duty after bootcamp, preceded by a naval message "USNAVEY will be aboard ". You can probably fill in the rest of the story. He was a quiet guy, and I'm certain not the type to make up such a story. And I'm very certain of the spelling.
After a couple more months at Cam Rahn and just before my scheduled R&R, my Dad died and I discharged a month short of 4 years service. Went back to college (Drexel, engineering), worked at the Naval Ship Engineering Center in Philly, then the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster. That closed (thanks to BRAC) and we transferred to Naval Air Systems Command at Pax River. I'm three years from retirement with a total of about 40 years of service. One-tenth of that carries twice the memories of the other 9/10ths.

Record 2943 I was transferred in from SRF-DaNang in June of 71, after we turned our small craft over to our counterparts.
I was an En-3, and I worked in the Pump Shop, a hooch on the starboard bow. We mainly overhauled the Jacuzzi Populsion pumps from the PBR's.
"Gus" Gustillo, EN-1, was my supervisor. He was a Filipino, and because I was married to a Filipina at that time, and loved Philippine cuisine, I always appreciated the times he cooked meals in our "hooch". He was an avid fisherman, and there was always fresh fish & rice available.
I was there at the "turnover" ceremony. I'll never forget the morning we flew off the fight deck for the last time. Does anyone remember the flap that happened in the galley that last morning, when the new owners of the YRBM-21 couldn't seem to find anyone that could fire off the galley equipment in order to prepare breakfast. I guess that there wasn't equipment designed specifically to prepare fish-heads and rice.
LOL, we had a chuckle over that! Does anyone have any pics or memories of the time we were rocketed on the starboard side. There was a bird destroyed, and the officer's mess took a round. Several of the Stewards were hurt as they prepared to serve the officers their coffee and crumpets at the mid to 4 am watch. I'll never forget the GQ alarm klaxon that woke me out of a sound sleep that early morning.

Record 2935 I first came into country and was assigned the USS Luzerne County LST 902. Later re assigned the USS Tutilia ARG 4 in Na Bei. I did 3 tours in the rivers. On the LST we traveled the rivers delivering important supplies, like beer, soda and cement. The LST traveled alot as far north and Da Nang. The ARG was stationed at Na Bei and very seldom moved, we repaired all kinds of river boats, drank lots of beer and gave our best to the young girls in town. About 1971 we gave the Tutilia away to china. I was then stationed on the USS Ocallahan DE 1051 where I came back to the coast of Viet Nam for 2, 6 month tours on the gun line. Some how I count 5 tours, well that's it.

Record 2933 First comment: WOW!! What a web site worthy of ALL Brownwater personnel. I served on the Clarion River from Dec '66-Dec '67 as a gunnersmate working out of the armory. Excellent bunch of guys & officers & darn proud to say I served with them. Had a lot of great times & stressful times. After going to S.E.R.E traing & two weeks at Camp Pendleton for various weapons traing from the Marines I finally made it in country to Da Nang in March '68. Was placed on board the APL-27 for awile (volunteered to help be a night baker for a while; was ok). Finally got assigned to Harbor Security as a gunny on one of the patrol boats. If I remember correctly there were only 2 boats with 81-MM mounted on the bow. I was on one of them. 24 on-24 off. Not bad really. We patroled across the harbor near Red Beach. Was about two hundred yards from bamboo rockets firing the night the ammo dump at Deep Water Pier was hit and exploded for days. We were ready to fire with mortars & 50-Cal but were to get out of the area. 253 people died that night, mostly civilian but their were some Americans. If you served any amount of time anywhere in Viet Nam, you tended to become numb after awile with your experiences & what you saw. I know now why the beer had so much formaldehyde in it---not because the cold storage warehouses kept getting blown up but because we already preserved if something happened to us. I had an angle watching me while there. I guess I can't the same for some of my friends. I stay active in my church & actually am a producer/director of a fairly succesful puppet ministry (yeah, puppets-ever tried to handle one correctly?). OK! Enough time has been taken. God bless all you brownwater sailors, army & marine included, who served to help a country in need. Record 2918 I served on the Hampshire County LST 819 from the time of her recomission in 1966 at Todds Ship-yard through 1968 when I left her in Da-Nang Vietnam. I was a Seaman on deck-force. We participated in Operation "Deck House 5", "Market Time" and shuttled between Da-Nang and Chu-Lai. I also remember going up the Cua-Viet River on the DMZ. I have some bad memories of that place. I might have forgot how to spell some of the places I mentioned, but if you were there you know what I am trying to spell. It would be fun if someone I served with would read this and send me a e-mail. I knew everyone on deck force and gunners-mates. I wasn't the most squared away sailor but I am proud to have served on the Hampshire County and the crew at that time. I will never forget my experiences with her, some good and some frightening or not so good any way. We were a tough bunch of roudies!
