Comments: Dear Kent: My brother (ENC J.A.Wilkey) told me of your web-page on 11/6 and I've been surfing since. I appreciate the effort you've made to save and share the history that effected so many, yet, is known by so few. I served aboard the YRBM-20 from the beginning, as I helped put her in service when she came in country February 1969. I served in RVN from 2 Aug 68 to 5 Aug 69. From the Annapolis I was assigned to NAVSUPPAC Vinh Long. We worked on the river aboard a barge (YR-9) much like the YRBM but lived and ate at a confiscated French villa about 3 miles across town. HAL-3, Det-3 was at the Army Air base next door. The 20 was towed from Japan where she had been built, and tied alongside the YR-9 which had been moved and anchored in the river near the RVN Navy Base, Vinh Long. When we moved aboard the 20, we remained anchored NW of the town of Vinh Long. Our original configuration was as follows: port and starboard ammies housed the PBR squadrons, 52 & 57. The beer bar was on the first starboard ammi and known as "The Shack Out Back". The aft ammi had the SEAL Team hooch on it (Team-1, Charlie Platoon). There was also a smaller pusher barge aft, with 2 diesel engines ... used primarly for flight operations. HAL-3 came aboard with 2 Bell UH-1B gunships. I was assigned to them as their first LSE and all purpose gopher (I was an SK2). Near the end of April '69 we lost both of those birds (320 & 305) and 4 close friends in Cambodia: M. Schaferknocker, J. Hart, H. Castle, R. Reardon. It was after this incident that we moved closer to Cambodia. In May, we were towed by a civilian tug up the Mekong to An Long. We moved only once in my remaining time aboard the 20. That move (propelled by the pusher barge) was only a few miles to find the widest spot in the river. So the 20 must have moved to Chau Duc between Aug. and Oct. '69. Lt. Clark was our Captain. I knew Steve Crandall, whose pictures you have in your collection ... great guy. We were never known as the "Delta Hilton" while I was aboard, although we knew we were living well! I have many photos, both print and slides but they're not saved to disk. I'll try my best to get that done and send them. WELCOME HOME, to you and all who served.

Comments: Respiratory problems? Cancer? Chronic Cough? Tinnitus? From: RM2 Seafeldt, USS Satyr, ARL-23 Gunboat Repair Ship Date: Tuesday October 27, 1999 Time: 01:03 Comments Hi there from Seattle from RM2 Ed Seafeldt. Im a federal employee, with a wife and 3 daughters. Spent 31 years in the military, 11 in the Navy and 20 in the Army. Not a pleasant subject but do any of the rest of you have respiratory problems from your service in Vietnam? I started coughing while there and by the time I got home in February 1970 was coughing up blood/sputum. At age 19-21 I coughed violently for up to 2-3 hours a day. Gradually my cough got better but by the mid- 1980s had acquired bronchitis and adult asthma and had periodic bouts of severe coughing spells. I then acquired sleep apnea and had surgery to partially correct the problem. My chronic cough has continued in 1999 with a vengance. I have been sick with a lung infection since January 1999 and it now involves my frontal lobe (constant headache); chest (heart pain); stomach cramps(constant pain) and testicles (pain from coughing); speech(difficult); eyes (bloodshot); eating (diffiult because in interferes with breathing); vomiting (caused by violent coughing). Doctors at the Seattle VA and Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound don't know what to do with me. They love to throw medications at me but that just complicates things. If any of this seems like something that is similar to what you have please let me know. INFO / RESEARCH FOR YOU WHO HAVE SIMILAR PROBLEMS (1) Vietnamese fish products are recognized world wide for paragonisis (lung flukes or "parasites" These devils get in your lungs and tear you up. Classic symptoms are a severe cough and blood in sputum. (2) Nitrous Dioxide - Used in arc welding. Too much of this in Vietnam and your lungs were toast. (3) Forget about agent orange and dioxin. The government and big business shut this down. No matter what you say, unless you have terminal respiratory cancer you will never see a dime of compensation. And even if you do you will never spend any of the compensation because you will be dead. (4) Many of the ships we served on were from WWII and literally, recommissioned time bombs filled with asbestos products. "Ambitious stewards of industry" modified our ships while we were on them, disturbing the asbestos resulting in us breathing the particles into our lungs. Tastey huh. BOTTOM LINE If any of you have considered that your the only one with respiratory problems, think again. Lets talk "compensation". "Buddy statements" are about the only thing the VA understands. Please E-mail me RM2 Edward Seafeldt, Seattle, Washington Ma99ma[ at ]wa.freei.net or call me at home in the evenings (206) 283-7409 or at work (206) 281-3005. Im so screwed up from Vietnam that I only work a couple of hours each day, normally in the mornings. TINNITUS If you have tinnitus from Vietnam I can help you with your claim with the VA. I just received retroactive disability pay going back to the early 1980s for tinnitus in one year from gunfire, radio noise and concussion grenades. I also receive disability pay for burning my foot off in 1990 and severing my plantar fascia in my heel in 1981. Look forward to talking to you. God Bless ya even if your not all screwed up. River Rats stick together! Thanks to Albert Moore. Edward & Margie Seafeldt, Seattle, Washington

Comments: I have had severe respiratory problems ever since my tour in Vietnam. I am trying to get "buddy" statements from fellow shipmate who served in the Mekong Delta. I was on board the USS Satyr, a repair ship, from 1969-1970. Can you send fellow shipmates a mass E-mail asking if other sailors have significant respiratory problems from their service? I would appreciate it. Im working with the VA and they want "buddy statements". Did you know that the fish in Vietnam contain parasites and are known for causing a condition called paragonisis? The symptoms are chronic cough and bleeding lungs. I spent the next 3 years after being in Vietnam with bleeding lungs and a severe chronic cough. Over time these conditions have progressed and I now have additional respiratory problems. As sailors we were also exposed as you know to other agents such as dioxin from the US Army Chemical Corps spraying missions, and herbicide spraying from the USAF. In additon some of us were exposed to asbestos when the WWII ships we served on were modified and asbestos was exposed during shipboard renovation projects. Can you help me by forwarding my E-mail to fellow sailors? Thanks. Ed Seafeldt (206) 283-7409 ma99ma[ at ]wa.freei.net

Spring of 1970 we engaged a large force of NVA outside of a small SF camp near the Cambodian border in which we had a small A Team involved and consistant high volumn of ground fire on our gunships and my aircraft. We were allowed to refuel and rearm on a barge that was in the river not to far from the action. The speed in which we were rearmed by the personel on that craft was outstanding and prevented a possible loss of that A Team. I would like to thank all of the men on that craft that day. It turned the tide for us and will always be in my memory. You chow was also outstanding ...had not had steak in 6 months.

Comments: Was first stationed at Tan An (Sept.'69). Remember the inspections and the strip shows, boys? River Division 573, worked it's way West. If I remember things right, we lived on the floating barracks/supply ship, at Tra Cu, on the Vam Co Tey river, it was called the "Apple". Smoked a lot of "Can Sa" on that barge. We then got orders to go to Rach Gia, the advanced base there was called Rach Soi. Those orders scared the crap out of us because there was a lot of NVA activity due to the fact that it was so close to the Cambodian border, we were used to dealing with VC. I spent a lot of time on the canals in night ambush, just 3 clicks from a NVA Prisoner of War camp. We had one incident of NVA troops trying to cross the border, they had been driven out of the nearby mountains by B-52's, I still remember the rumbling. When the fire-fight was over we went out into the field to get the body count. Any one out there remember any of this? Contact me? I am pictured on Kent's Web site sitting on the bow of my boat, relaxing, playing the guitar with a couple of friends during some down time.

Comments: I have just come online with tne Internet and found your website by chance.I have spent a number of hours so far going over your website and have had a lot of enjoyment going over your stories & photos. It brings back a lot of memories for me as I was in Vietnam in 1969 where I served with the Royal Australian Engineers on board AV1356 Clive Steele as a gunner behind an M60.The Clive Steele was a WW2 LSM,commonly known as the "Jolly Green Giant". Most of our time was spent down the Mekong delivering 105 shells to your fire support bases like Cantho,Catlo.I have quite a number of slides of your boats taken around that region and some years ago purchased a book "The Brown Water Navy" by Col.Victor Croizat which I have read a number of times.Feel free to contact me ,keep up the good work mate.

Comments: Hi - noticed your link at the Rota AA page and thought I would drop you a line. I am not sure if our paths crossed in Rota but your name sure looked familiar. I kinda think we may be from the same era since I was up in I Corp with the marines in 70 - 71. I graduated from Rota in '68 having spent my entire 4 years of high school there. Still brings back fond memories. Drop a line if you have a chance and I will dust off some old yearbooks.
