I, Jerry W. Castleberry was on board the U.S.S. Boston Cag-1, CA-69 from July 1966 to April, 1969. I made two tours to North and South Vietnam. We supported Naval Gun Fire Support for our comrades on the beach. The Boston was very sucessful in her missions. We had several firefights and had damages to the Boston. Mount 51, five inch guns in front of the bridge had a direct hit, and several sailors was injured. We went to DaNang, Vietnam on April 30th and May 17th and was anchored in port. We took on frindly fire from our own comrades because they thought we were the enemy. Sprays of enemy fire was all around us. The Boston shot more then 38,000 rounds in 1968 and had to go the Subic bay, Phillipines to replace new 8" gun barrels. The Boston was in the brown waters, and we drank the water that was poisoned by agent orange. Our government is not really taking care of the Veterans. We need to be totally compensated for being exposed to toxins of agent orange and other chemicals. I recommened that all sailos who was near South Vietnam or ported in DaNang harbor to file a claim for agent orange if you have one of the diseases list from The Department of Veterans Affairs. We you start you claim do get discouraged, keep the claim open on appeals. Keep sending back to the VA on time every form that the VA wants you to fill out. Comrades we as sailors can win the war on this matter. It's all up to you. I received 20% disability on diabetes because I never gave up. I also had to go before an administrated judge from Washington D.C. The judge was in my favor so act now and push your way threw. I can't understand why Senator Kery said what he said in 1971 about Vietnam Veterans. Our leaders will say anything to deceive us as Americans to get leadership in Washington D.C. Togetherness is this best thing we can do to let America know over the many years bloodshed has made America free. Thank you for allowing me to express my thoughts to the world. Welcome Home to all, I have been into this site many times , reading all the letters from each one . I have written a few in here over the last few years also and even found a Buddy of mine from serving on the same four Man Boat on the Perfume River , Terry Blanco from Memphis and we have been togeather a few times since and enjoying talking about almost 40 years ago, it sure don t seem that long ago and my Dad says the same about WW-II and that was 60 years ago for him !!!! The main reason i'am writting today is there is a Reunion coming up June 16-19th in 2005 and i want as many people to come as can , i went to # 3 Reunion last Oct. 2003 in San Diego and it was Great , i met some Great Guys at that one and hope to meet many more . The Reunion is in Branson Missouri and its at the Radisson Hotel you must talk with Christy Blakey 417 335-5767 the rooms are $75. per night and there is a Reunion registration fee is $35.each and that covers our Dinner at the Banquet. This is NSA DaNang Association U S Naval Support Activity Da Nang , don t matter what Job you were in we were all there at one time or another and i would say over the years there must have been over 50,000 Men from naval Support DaNang so lets make it to Branson and meet each other and tell our Storys to the ones that believe them and enjoy being with Brother & Sister Veterans. Jerry Hubbs is our Presidtent and his e-mail address is gghubbs[ at ]msn.com and i am sure he can answer any questions you may have , i hope we have the biggest turn out ever and that it will build more & More each year as we all grow old togeather. Thanks for taken the time and reading all this and if anyone was on the LCM 6 or 8's drop me a line . God Bless all Active and Veterans of our Military David E. Greetings Nha Be Vets, Since non-volling from subs gets you an E-ticket to Nam, that got me to Nha Be via Saigon.I was the dude who set up the food for your parties which you tipped me in San Migiel beer. Only two major incidences happened on base during my first tour. UDTs brought in a large mine and proceeded to defuse in front of curious onlookers, me included. Luck was with me that night...I left and went to bed. Later on, it exploded killing I don't know how many, but I believe the XO. My barracks were the closest to the docks right off the main road in back of the small quonsets huts (see the picture here) that ran paralell to the docks. Thought we were being attacked! Later that year one of those quonset huts blew up from a booby-trapped grenade brought in in a weapons cache. No day to day trying to stay alive story here as you can see. You guys faced that every time you went out. I don't know why but I forgot everybodies names except one ; Michael David Myers who was my best friend while I was there (also another cook). You guys sure put on some great parties. Loved going on the beach and getting laid. Does anyone remember the "INAGODDADAVEDDA" BAR painted up all dayglow with that song playing nonstop? How about the swimming pools they put in on base? I hadn't seen pictures of Nha Be except for my own. Didn't know that I could find a web site like this and I sure am glad it's here.Peace.....Tim also known as Woody

USS Brule delivered Cargo up and down the rivers of Vietnam. The ship served the Mekong and Bassac rivers in the Delta as well as SeaFloat and SolidAnchor on Song Bo Di at the southern most tip of Vietnam. From May of 1970 to May of 1971 was a period of time of "Vietnamization" of the war. The most noticeable change was seen on our missions to supply SeaFloat. During the beginning of service, we had helocopters, swiftboats, and PBR's as escorts. By the end of my tour we had no escorts and, in fact, had to serve as an escort to an unarmed tug transiting out of the river.

I served as Operations Officer for NSA Danang and Naval Advisor to Vietnamese Transportation Unit at NSA Danang. This was during the Vietnamization program and things didn't always go smoothly with the turn over. The combined Officer and Enlisted Club was a favorite place for lunch especially from the Screaming Eagle pilots coming down from Phu Bi. Our LZ was the football field where Roger Staubach and others used to play! My Vietnamese counterpart didn't like to do much so I usually served as OIC of the the Vietnamese LCM crew whenever we had to deliver supplies to Swift Boat bases in MR 1. Would enjoy hearing from fellow Navy vets who served at that time at Camp Tien Sha as it was known.

I am pleased and a little overwhelmed to find this awesome site. When I saw the main gate photo, my mind refused to believe I must have stood over a hundred watches there. I was always a late night early morning MAA, SP or main gate guard. The last time I stood MAA, I had to save our Captain from the XO who was about to bust in his door and kick his butt. So I must have waved thru a bunch of you guys or at least escorted a few of you rowdies back to base. I worked down in the supply warehouse by the pier. If you put in for parts or traded for neat goodies like watches or K-bars, you probaly got them from me. How can anyone not have posted about "Brown Dog" the alcoholic stud dog. He bunked in our barracks but never belonged to anyone. Boy I'll never forget his bloodshot eyes. I got a couple of joy rides back then. Thanks guys you that looked out for me. I think I recognize a few of the names listed on this board. I'll be back, enjoyed the photo's and posts.

Spent my first year arriving July 6, 1969, on YFU 63 out of Danang supporting detachments fom Dong Ha, Cua Viet, Hue, Tan May, to Chu Lai and Sa Hyunh. The Yr 71 was in Danang then. I didn't know anyone on it then and had no clue I would be stationed on it down south in the delta on my second tour. Heck, I had no idea I would have a second tour. My second tour I came to the YR 71 in Dec 70 as a YN2 in Binh Thuy and left a few months later transfered to Special Services in Nha Be. I remember how crazy the command was. Twice they refused medical attention to injured Vietnamese children one of whom died shortly after receiving medical attention from the doctor on the YRBM 20. I remember XO Nelson Salez shooting his M79 at the little kids in their sampans as they were trying to salvage garbage from the YRBM 20 which was anchored up river from us - these kids were just trying to survive. The kids were not supposed to cruise in their sampans directly between the YRs on the river in case one of them let loose a mine. One day Nelson Salez saved all our garbage, loaded it in the Captains Gig that evening and drove up in front of the YRBM 20 and dumped it into the river and radioed them asking them how they liked our garbage floating by their barge. What the hell was he thinking. I went into the radio room one time on official business and he pulled out his 38 and stuck it in my stomach and told me I had no business in there and to get out. He backed me out the door with his gun stuck in my stomach and slammed the door in my face. I remember BM1 Reno one night getting drunk and shooting at the Vietnamese fishermen in their sampans and Reno called Jones, who was on watch, up to the first class quarters. As Jones later said, Reno told him he wanted to shoot him. Rumor was Reno had to be subdued in the first class quarters and given a sedative. What a role model he was. One night a granade mysteriously went off right over the XO's stateroom blowing a hole in the deck which happened to be the ceiling of Ltjg Salez stateroom. Hmmmmm. I was playing Ueker on the mess decks at the time and thought we had been mined. Unnerved a lot of people. There was no barber so they picked a kid named Ray and made him Barber - sort of on the job training - no experience required. A 1st class told Gary Gossett to get a hair cut which he did. The 1st class did not like the hair cut and said Gary didn't get one and wrote Gosset up for disobeying a direct order to get a haircue when Gary actually had gotten one. When Gary got to Captain's mast Seaman Ray tesified that he had given Gossett a hair cut as requested. Gossett was given a verbal reprimand for not getting a haircut that was pleasing to his 1st class. There were rules of dress implemented that if we wore shorts they had to be hemmed to 2 inches above the knee - no hotpants in our Navy - and the Master at Arms went around with a ruler measuring the length of our shorts. We had to wear certain pants if we wore T-shirts and other pants if we wore the green fatigue uniform shirts. Here we were sitting in the middle of the river on the Cambodian border at Tan Chau, as though some VC sniper might see us from the beach and be horrified that one of us might be wearing shorts that were hemmed 3 inches above the knee or a shirt with the wrong pants. The whole command was a joke, from Lt. Kem Hunter who had supposedly applied as Conscientious Objector status that wasn't accepted by the government, to the illustrious Ltjg Nelson Salez, to all the lifers who gave us such a double standard to live under. It was my understanding that Lt. Hunter had a nervous breakdown in Binh Thuy and was taken to the hospital and placed back on command about 3 days later. Unbelievable. We had a saying back then that the Navy was 180 years of tradition unchanged by history or modern technology. Who was the ET2 who stood toe to toe with Ltjg Salez and refused to salute him. Salez said that he was an officer by an act of congress and the ET2 had to salute the uniform. As the ET2 later told it, he told Ltjg Salez if he took off the uniform and hung it on tree he would salute it all day but as long as it was worn by Ltjg Salez he wouldn't do it. Would love to get back in touch with John Upchurch, Charlie Gaspard, Gardner "Nat" Clark, Rick Davis, Gary Gossett, BM Rice, Mike Harley, Roy Braundmier, Dall and so many others. Just got in touch with Joe Best and have tried to contact Tim Estep. Lt. Hunter, BM1 Reno, whoever the Chief Petty Officer was, Warrant Officer Parker and especially Ltjg Nelson Salez please don't bother. God Bless those of you that cared. I look forward to the next time we meet.

Read Lawrence Buchanan's post (#1468) And it sent chills down my back. He mentioned being in Dong Tam the night the LST across the water got hit, Hell, I was on that LST. I had a real bad headache from drinking the formlydhyde laced Budweiser on the bow ramp, the cargo deck was like a boiler factory and the cargo hatch was blown all to hell. The Army CO sent a guy down to tell us we had to get off our "boat", and our skipper was nice enough about it all but quite firm in sending the word back that no, the Navy doesn't abandon ship simply because someone was shooting at us. Helluva night.

A week ago I didn't know how to turn on & off a computer, now first time on the web I make a hit on your site. WOW! Am I impressed.Been trying to fine someone to locate information to support VA claim but no one I have spoke to really knows how, so I bought a second hand computer (what a mistake) to try this myself. Let the adventure begin. Well the VA tells me they have no record of me being in Vietnam. They don't come right out and call me a lair for they do say my events sound crediable, but according to them I wasn't there. Imagine that. So here I go. I Was sent to Cua Viet, at the mouth of the Cua Viet river and the DMZ with the III Marine (Amphibious) Div. I was station there 8/68-11/68. While there I witnessed a PBR Blow up at the boat dock killing a man aboard. Don't know if it was caused by incoming or an accident, nor did I ever learn the name of the man killed. I Can't remember dates when events happened however while I was there the president implimented the bombing halt of North Vietnam.Boy did we get pounded that night, hit our amo dump, fuel dump, and no jets from Danang or off our carriers came to our aid that night or any other night after that while I was there. Then 12/68 I was transferred to Danang and stationed aboard a 100 ton floating crane. Some time between 1/69-5/69 two large supply river boats (for some reason YFU's comes to mind) were hit and sunk due to rocket attack in the Danang harbor. We spent three days raising the wreackage and recovering the bodies of our dead. I helped a corpman put bodies in bags, the smell so bad zip a little, vomite alot. From there I volunteered to be sent to the USS Nueces (APB40) in the Mecong Delta where I finished my tour with task force 117. In closing I'd just like to say thanks for beinghere Harold.

Thank you for providing this great site. It certainly brought back memories about that period in time and that area of the world. To provide a little background, I served as a Quartermaster on the CGC Mellon (WHEC 717) as part of Operation Market Time. Most of our time was spent as NGFS ship at the mouth of the Song Ong Doc river however, we also saw action around Anthoi, Mei Li II and several other locations along the coast, providing gunfire support with our 5" 38 calibre gun. The Mellon also provided Station Ship duties during part of the Columbia Eagle incident, maintaining COMMS between the Columbia Eagle and COMPHISEC (Admiral Zumwalt) until properly relieved by a Naval Squadron (Note: This incident involved a mutiny by 2 US merchant seamen on a ship chartered by the USN to carry ammunition to Satahip Air Force Base in Thailand). The ship also shadowed an NVA SL4 infiltration trawler all the way to Hainan Tao island, sometimes pulling to within 25' of the enemy vessel. We were relieved by the CGC Berring Straits in June of 1970 so that we could return to Hawaii and resume Ocean Station Vessel duties. Would welcome any feedback from individuals that may have had contact with the Mellon during that timeframe.

I don't like war but if you had to fight I couldn't imagine a better place than the rivers of sunny Viet Nam on a beer-laden Tango boat. Remember making coffee with plastic explosives, race track and manning the helm with your feet while sitting outside the coxswain's flat, trading c-rats for whiskey and beer and ice, LRPR's as a "treat", and the bad stuff like rockets coming at you like knuckleballs, giant rats and leeches. 35 years ago and I'll never forget it. Hello, to all who served on the USS Pitkin County from '66 to '67. I was an EN3 who was assigned to the maden crew who commissioned the ship in Long Beach, CA. We were commissioned with our sister ship the Coconino County. Some of the more memorable events started when we broke the block in one of our engins in route to our home port of Guam and were docked for repairs in Alongapo, The Philippines. We were "STUCK" for about 90 days because they had to completely remove the engine from the ship. I think the guys on the Coconino County were really p'd off. So sad, what a tough detail!!!! Then finally on station in Nam we were part of Operation Market time for about six months. Our main assignment was to service the Swift Boats and crews. I wonder if we ever serviced Carrys Swift Boat? Then we had the "Misfortune" of being picked to spend about two months doing the Census of the Merrianas Island Chain. We even went to check the Census on Quave Jima which is the Island they used to film the movie "Mutiny On The Bounty" with Clark Gable. Oh, and yes they still don't wear tops there. I wonder if that's still true today? Then there was the baseball game we played with the guys stationed on Iwo Jima. Darn we lost. Then back to Ops. Market Time until 12-67. I truely think I was blessed with the best of times on the USS Pitkin County. I have lots of pictures I took during the above, check with me.

Am looking for Marines that served onboard this ship the U.S.S. Westchester Cty LST 1167 in 1970-1971. I think the unit was India Co. 3/9. Believe Captain White was CO. I would like to know about the water filter system on this ship and where or how drinking water was taken aboard the ship for us to drink. Also for showers and for pressing uniforms and cooking of meals. Need to know what kind of filter systems these were and how many boilers was onboard. Sure would like to know if allot of Marines and Navy are still living who served onboard during the Vietnam Era. Really need to know the mission we were on when we went up this river in Vietnam during 1970-1971. Rember seeing the rounds going off on land and ourship was real dark that night. Everything was so quite. We were like snesking up this river. The smell was so different like something I have never smelt before. It the smell still sticks with me today, and the darkness was different too like a stillness that just came over my body. It was real weard and I still see that river sometimes in my sleep. Can anyone help me with this. Thanks John.

I am proud that I served as an Army Company Commander on the USS Benewah in 1968-69, as a member of the Mobile Riverine Force. Brownwater Navy! A proud force of Navy and Army folk who lived and fought together in a close and a very personal way. I can't say enough good about the Navy Troops, Sailors, I suppose, that supported us. They took us through small canals, under fire and sometimes dieing, all the way, to landing sites that were frought with danger. It is hard to describe the rain and hail of bullets that we experienced, yet the boat drivers kept going to take us to our landing site. We would often catch a B-40 going down the canal. Many fine Sailors died proctecting us. It was not unusual for our boats to come under a hail of muderous fire in an ambush on the canal. We only had speficic ways to go, and the bad guys knew where they were. A B-40 into a gun turret meant the death of a sailor, which I have seen often. We would get up at about 0230 in the morning and load up into the boats, go through the canals and land on a place along the river where it was thought the enemy may be. Sometimes, the mud was so deep, we could not get thru it. Thankfully, Charley was not there. He could mowed us down there. Suffice it to say, it was pretty exciting for me and the Navy guys. Actually, there was no difference between the Navy or us. We could both die! I wish I could tell you more. Greene

My first trip to Vietnam was with Swiftboats, this trip was cut short by a hearing loss, then I went into Assault Craft Div 12 as maintenance Petty officer and made a short trip to Vietnam up the river from Danang to Hue on the perfume river. Then I returned to Coronado which had become home to me. I wanted to reenlist in "country" and volunteered my third time with Seal Team support boats where I was stationed at Camp Fay with all the spooks of that era. Then I volunteered for my fourth tour with PBRs. This started out with the knowledge the unit I joined had just left Giant Slingshot and there was a need for advisors in Benluc. I volunteered again and ended up in Raid 71 which became Rid 44. I was bored with heavy assault boats so organized a Boston Whaler ambush team. Were we successful? Not really! It seemed that praying wives and mothers messed up a lot of good ambush plans. We did develop very good tactics. I volunteered for EOD and received two waivers; one for hearing and one for age. I was 37 when I completed diving training at Key West Underwater Swim school. I served in EOD on both areas Hawaii and Ft Story then a tour as the EOD team attached to Minewarfare in Charleston, SC.

My father (James Ervin Rivers)was attached to PCF 12 & PCF 102 but he never talked much about his time over there, just a few details. Is there anyone out there who served with him or knew him, that might help me in telling his story to his grandchildren. He passed away 18 May 1994 from cancer. The only thing I have of his is his Shadow Box and a copy of his Personnel Records but that doesn't help me with how he recieved his medals or what kind of man he was over there. If anyone knew him please contact me with more info. Thank you & God Bless!

This is a great site. I used it extensively last year in putting together a Grandfather's Navy Memory Book for my grandchildren. I was the Assistant Enlisted Personnel Officer at Naval Support Activity Saigon, first in Saigon (bunked at the North Pole BOQ in Cholon) and then at Nha Be when we relocated there as part of Operation MOOSE (jokingly referred to as Move Out of Saigon Expeditiously after 1968 Tet Offensive). Processed virtually every one of the Brownwater Navy men through the Annapolis BOQ/BEQ, made all of the in-country assignments and got most of you back out of country after your tours. Ran across many of you on a regular basis. Was a great experience with the finest in the world.

I hope this wont be considered as spam or advertising, if it is I apologize. I am a veteran myself, not old enough for vietnam but did medical support for Beruit. I am now the editor of Airboat World Magazine. I would like to run an article honoring the veterans that served in airboat platoons during the vietnam war. Anyone that could send information on how I can get resources for this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot All gave some...Some gave all...

Chronic respiratory problems ever since being on USS Satyr (Converted LST- Repair ship). Started with chronic cough, chronic nasal drip and chemical sensitivity. Over 30 years later this is still a constant physical reminder of service in Vietnam. Please contact me if you have similar medical problems due to your Vietnam experience: exposure to diesel fuels exposure to sandblasting operations exposure to welding operations exposure to hazardous chemicals in machine shop exposure to painting operations worked in area of your ship impacted by poor ventilation and or ventilated by air conditioning exposure to second hand smoke Suspect other fellow shipmates health also impacted by poor LST ventilation and air conditioning. Would like to hear from you if you also served on LST, ARL or other type of ship and have similar problems. Have lots of information for you on how your hypertension can impact your respiratory problems. Have used National Institute of Medicine to document known medical association between multiple respiratory conditions like adult asthma, bronchitis, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive lung disease, chronic cough, chronic nasal drip and chemical sensitivity. Also if you have tinnitus and hypertension how this can impact your respiratory problems. Also, ships crew and I, over last 30 years have compiled extensive list of hazardous chemicals our unit had on board. Navy now has HAZMAT list for each class of ship. When we served, Navy has advised me that they didn't keep a detailed list. Agent Orange is not the only hazard you faced. Big mistake to concentrate your efforts on adjudication of disability claims on just Agent Orange. There were plenty of other respiratory contaminates out there. Record 2802 In May of 69, I met Mike Wilson from Durham, NC. We were in Charleston, SC where we both were given our orders to the same place, Saigon, RVN. We were clueless on what we'd be doing there. We took 10 days leave and headed to Little Creek, VA for our counter insurgency training. From there we made a stop at Travis AFB, then on to RVN with a short stop in HI. We ended up in Saigon for only a couple of days and then on to Cat-Lo where we served in a support capacity. Most of the Naval folks spent time rotating in and out of other bases in the Mekong Delta. This is what we did to suport the war. I was a Mike boat driver carrying supplies up the river, crane operator (Big Bertha) lifting Swift Boats, PBR's and Vietnamese junks out of the water for repair and overhaul. My CO was affectionately known as "Bull Dog". A Mustang LT who really did love his guys. I'll never forget, he loved to smoke and be driven around in his jeep. He always looked after us, even when we got in trouble. Some of the other men that I'll never forget. BMCM Charles "Chuck" Baldwin, who later went on to be Command Master Chief of the Ike, and was in the running for Master Chief of the Navy. He finished second to his best friend, Master Chief, Hagan, this may be spelled wrong. Chuck, Mike and I still get together as often as we can. Chuck is currently the Commandant of the Delaware Military School, which he opened several years ago. Mike Wilson, is still in Durham, SC with his wife Denise and Family. Others I remember but have not been able to contact. Herman W. Duell III, from Falls Church, Va. who ran the paint locker, and was as crazy as can be. BM2 Larry Hurst from Raleigh, NC. Both were excellent sailors and Bronze Star reciepients. I will never forget their fun loving spirit. I would like to know what become of these men. Others; BM-3 Fudge, BM3 Ayers from Montana,BM-3 Smith (smitty) from California, GM3 Andy Anderson from Beckly, WV (he dove of the boom from the top of the crane (YD)at the quay wall one evening after we left the Acey/Duecy club. I got halfway up (never was one for heights). There are other names that escape my memory now, but I see there faces and remember the stories. Mike and I both left Cat-Lo the same day and went through Oakland and then on to Charleston. I stayed in the Naval Reserve program for 28 years and was assigned to the Reserve Cargo Handling Battalion Det 4. Our battalion was recalled to support operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm on Sept 6, 1990. We were on active duty from Sept through April of 1991. Our Skipper was Captain Bob Davis, from Columbia, SC. None finer along with his staff. We brought everyone home. Thanks for the opportunity to post this message. If any of my old shipmates from Cat-Lo are out there, I'd give anything to hear from you. Regards, BMCS Larry Teachey, Retired.

Also serving in the medical dept at the time was Lt. Wright, MD (he had a big python snake anybody remember him?)and Lt. Stanzick, Md and HM2 Fuge.
