I served at CSC Qui Nhon from 1/69 thru 3/69 then was transferred to CSC Vung Tau. Vung Tau had two hills (actually small mountains). CSC Vung Tau was located on "The Hill" with the lighthouse when I first arrived there. Some 6 or 7 months later we moved to "VC Hill" on the other side of Vung Tau. "VC Hill" is what is shown on this website as "The Hill". "VC Hill" was an old French Fort originally built to defend Vung Tau harbor from a naval attack. A hundred plus yards above the Navy Compound on "VC Hill" was an army communications facility that was located at on the summit of the hill. As the need arose, most of the sailors at CSC Vung Tau, one or two at a time, were sent to Cat Lo to ride the swiftboats when Cat Lo was short of personnel due to leave, illness or other reasons. The base at Cat Lo and our compound on "VC Hill" shared the same commander. I returned stateside 12/71 after nearly 2 years in country. I don't remember his name, but someday I'd like to contact one of the officers that I served under. We used to call him "Trung-Uy Fall-In-Well", a nickname that he received during his first week at CSC Vung Tau when he fell into an old water well about 50 yards from the compound.

My late cousin, Marion "Bart" Bartholomei, talked about being aboard a PBR, I think as skipper, during his last couple of tours in Vietnam. He didn't talk much, and I was about 20 years younger than Bart, so I don't know all I should. I was in the Navy in the mid 1970s, after the end of the Vietnam conflict. Bart joined toward the end of the Korean war, then just stayed and stayed and stayed. Retired after about 30 years, then signed up for the Military Sealift Command in his late 50s and was there until shortly before his death. I wish I knew more. Bart was a great role model, and one of those old eagle-eyed warriors. He died of lung cancer at 65, and the Navy that had been his home for over 40 years in one form or another took him out to sea one last time. Thanks and God Bless all Bart's brother sailors. As I watch my son go through the Sea Cadets and remind me more of Bart each day, I'm proud to have touched that heritage, and of the history you represent. I'm going to try to learn all the things Bart wouldn't talk about, reading this site. An uncle, Sgt. Isaac Tolman Leadbetter, USMC, served in China in the 1930s and in the South Pacific in the 1940s, and he didn't talk much, either. But my son has been taught to respect these men, who did their part at their country's call, and went on to influence others and leave a legacy of honor and dignity. So a hearty salute to Bart, and a "Semper Fi!" to Uncle Isaac.

Request: Does anyone remember this man, please? Braud, Hermas EN3 RivDiv 532 (05/70 16 days) If anyone does, he was very special to me and will always be remembered. He has recently passed away (April 22, 2003) of a heart condition. I am going through the motions of having an "In Memory Of" patch made for him that I will wear on my jacket and eventually want to make the walk to the wall that he was never able to make after he came home. If anyone remembers him or might have pictures with him in them that they would be willing to scan, it would be hugely appreciated. Have a feeling I'll always miss the man .. not sure if I am in mourning or healing or what .. maybe trying to heal wounds that he had both inside and out even though he's gone now. Not sure but would appreciate the knowledge that someone just might remember him. He always felt like he wasn't home yet .. worried that he wouldn't be remembered .. ironically, even after this amount of time, he's on my mind a few hundred times a day. Never to be forgotten and always to be missed. Thanks folks and even though I wasn't there ... to anyone that was .. "Welcome Home". Xtas

Arrived in Nam Can as a Ensign in late 1971 after a 9 month language course at Defense Language Institute in Monterey. Spent most of my time as a watchstander in the TOC. Ed Lefebre made a BIG impression on me during my first weeks at Nam Can. I have some pictures of the base during the Vietnimzation period as the US compound grew smaller and our numbers went from a few hundred to about 30 when I was given my ticket home. I retired a Commander in 1993. I'm now a stockbroker with a 17 year old boy and a 14 year old daughter. Any one from that era - shoot me an email. I'd like to find out what happened to us all. Looking at my old pictures, we were all so young.

Glad to see the site recognizes the Army's Brownwater fleet as well. We don't seem to get too much press. I served with the 5th Trans. The 5th used LCU's mostly, but had two tugs for the ammo runs to Cogido.

I served at Solid Anchor from about March of 71 til June 71 as a GMG3 in the gunners shack. When I get time I'll scan some photos and send them to you. This place was a real hole in the ground. We had to drink either the really bad Pabst BR or coke. The water was loaded with salt from the canal/river and who knows what else and was almost undrinkable - even when kool-aid in the mess hall was added. Many of us came down with non-specific urethritis from this brew we were pushing through our kidneys. Most of my time was spent in storing and dispensing ammo when it came in on the LST's. Driving a pettibone forklift into the well deck and unscrambling the mess was always fun. The best thing there were the other guys that I worked with. While many of their names have drifted off into the past, I will never forget them. The VC once in while kept us hopping with a mortar attack or once I watched a couple of them blow away a So. Vietnamese Ranger hooch across the river with a 75mm recoiless. The only time I was actually shot at with a rifle was by some KC scouts that we didn't let into the base without I.D.'s I was never convinced that they really had come over - that event cemented those thoughts in my mind. I know if anyone remembers me that they will be dumbfounded to know that I am now an assistant pastor at Calvary Chapel Rialto, in Calif. This is why I listed our website - it's the only one with a recent picture of myself. May God bless you all. Roland

Was Gun Boss on Hunterdon County/LST 838 from July 69 (missed the first moonwalk...) to July 70.. Remember BM3 Ronnie Marcum from Waco TX saving life of BM3 Feldman from D.C. area during salvage of capsized PBR. He received Navy/Marine Corp Medal for this. Was privileged to get to know many PBR/Riv Div, Seawolf, SEAL, Minediv, etc. sailors 'though names are sketchy at best. I remember SN Freddie Giordano who almost got whacked during refueling at Vung Tau when mooring line wasn't cast off from fuel pier (VN on pier...) and mooring line almost parted... Will never forget the preparations for Nixon's April '70 incursion into Cambodia... All those Chaplains milling about giving services, counseling, hearing confessions -- they were expecting heavy casualties. Hunterdon County was largest ship/anchored furthest up the river in Cambodia as forward support for PBR's, SEAWOLVES, SEALS, Army Cobra's, etc. No sooner than we anchored, another "T", Jennings County maybe came alongside and resupplied us. Thanks guys, that was superb!! It would have been slightly better if you hadn't told the Task Group Command staff that you had traded movies with us and that we had Zefferelli's "Romeo & Juliet" which was new and really hot for that time... Wouldn't you know it, to show their admiration for all our hard work and exposure to danger/enemy fire (they conveniently had anchored right below the border w/ Cambodia) they sent a chopper to rip it right off the projector in the Chief's locker. That's inspired leadership!! We got over it though and have lots of good memories of several ship's parties around Long Xuyen with Army Signal Corp unit and a basketball game against some Chinese there (I was ref)... After all these years, nothing but good memories but often wonder if drinking that foul water out of the Mekong (Agent Orange cocktail)will ever catch up with us... Just surfing this GREAT site makes me want to dig up my old slides & stuff. I have a lot of old patches from the RivDivs we supported, my old beret, etc. Would enjoy hearing from anyone "back in the day."

Back again and still looking for old shipmates...found one so far from the original group in Da Nang or on ops. Also have a new email address. The book is almost finished and I'm still looking for more help with pictures of the 8-Boats from 65-68 brothers, lost all of mine in a fire. I was in Da Nang until I got sent to survey the Cua Viet with QM 'The Mighty' Quinn, from there sent to run the ferry on the Cau Dai near Hoi An while the bridge was rebuilt...'Dodge City'. From there to Tan My until 'Frosty' Cain and Ken Brown were killed on the road back from Hue, then up to finish up on the Cua Viet during and after Tet of 68. I have hooked up with Bob Kilkelly who was the snipe on the 876 with Quinn and was in contact with his seaman but lost contact. Would love to talk to anyone that remembers (or better them) Horace D. Breedland, 'Granny' Flagg, Lang, Al Zaner, 'Smitty', (black) Chief Parrish or any others from the 8-Boats from these times. A lot of the guys from 67-68 in Cua Viet are a blur so I can't come up with names. By then I figured I was going back to die on that river. Memories: The night we were caught up river at Dong Ha and it was supposed to be over-run by 'Chuck'...the guys on our PBR took a ton of fire from the other side of the river! Didn't even get a scratch...lucky dudes! The big Acy-Ducy game in the hooch at Cua Viet one night? The table piled high with MPC (around 14 Grand). I was holding the winning hand...couldn't match the pot and the hooch was 'locked-down' because of the size of the pot? Passing the 1475 just south of the ramp at Dong Ha when all hell broke loose from the river bank? We didn't take a hit but they blew the hell out of that U-Boat. Please...if anyone has anything or knows anyone please contact me. Home phone is 724.224.3023 Cell is 724.448.1509 Bob Johnston BM3 nickname there was 'John' Boats: 913, 860, 876, 565, 876, others

Record 2722
Joined the Navy in Dec. 1965 at the age of 17 but delayed going to USNTC San Diego until Jan 3. 1966 after I had turned 18 late Dec. About the 2nd or 3rd week of boot camp I received my draft notice though I don't recall if it was from the Army or the USMC. I believe the Marines had just instituted the draft in 1966. At any rate completed boot camp and then went to Electricians Mate 'A' school at San Diego. Upon completing the course my entire class received orders for NAVSUPPAC Danang, Vietnam. After training in small boats, weapons, counter insurgency and SERE training, most of it done at Camp Pendelton, we left for Subic Bay to pick up our boats. From there we were transported by LSD to Danang. Most of my tour was without incident though we did come under mortar attack one night in Hue and had some sporadic contacts with VC while going up and down the rivers to Hue and Dong Ha. In 1967 we were part of a group that helped with evac of Marines whose company had been ambushed in a valley north of Dong Ha. We transported food, beer, toiletries, ammunition of all kinds to the 3rd Marines at Dong Ha and Hue. My primary job aboard the boat was to maintain the two generators and the electrical systems aboard. While going up river, especially to Dong Ha, my job was to lay out on the bow ramp that was lowered and to spot for mines that the VC would float down the river camoflauged with clumps of grass. There usually was another fella with me though now I don't recall his name. We both were considered sharp shooters. I can't complain about the food because the boat had a very small galley and we more often than got hot food and real eggs...hehehe not the powdered stuff. We did occasionally eat C & K rats but this was rare. For whatever reason the US Navy decided we didn't rate M-14's or M-16's and issued us M-1 Garands. A fine rifle to be sure but WWII vintage and we had two 20mm cannons in gun tubs port/starboard. These were also WWII vintage including the friggin ammo which would fail to fire, jam the gun, or blow up. We used percussion grenades while anchored in the river at Dong Ha to discourage VC divers(VC UDT?). I believe we were credited with 5 VC KIA during my tour and the worst duty we had was transporting refrigerated trailers with Marine KIA, some of them buddies from the the 3rd Recon Bat. We did transport VC prisoners as well. There was a few times we were allowed to go to the Marine fire base at Dong Ha where we made many friends, drank a boatload of beer and talked about "The World". Same with Hue. To this day I thank God for allowing me to survive my tour when so many guys around my own age didn't. During that period we had no KIA or WIA aboard my boat but one of the boats in our squadron did hit a mine that killed an Army Captain and wounded a bunch of people. The only person I stayed in touch with after my tour was a fella by the name of James Butler, we all knew him as Jay. After Nam and the Navy we stayed in touch and even worked together in Palmdale and Lancaster, CA. For many years I did my best to forget my experience over there and find myself today a 56 year old man trying to remember names of boat mates and details. If any of you out there have info and can help me fill in the blanks please contact me at my e-mail address. Your first e-mail may bounce due to the security restrictions I have set up. Be assured though it will come up in a section labeled suspect e-mail so I will see it. If that happens please be patient and I will return the e-mail. Just make sure you put something about LCU's or NAVSUPPAC Danang in your subject line. Haven't been to "The Wall" in DC yet but plan on going before to much longer. Welcome home guy's and God speed.

I served onboard a landing craft (LCM 8). Our primary mission was to tow barges of fuel or ammunition to various points in the canal and river systems of the Mekong Delta. We were on our missions for several weeks at a time and often completely isolated and unprotected from the ambushes we encountered. We were armed with two fifty caliber machine guns that scared most ambushes away. We were always vulnerable to the water mines that the Viet Cong used to ambush us. My greatest fear was of snipers. I am so proud of the fine soldiers with whom I served. They are always in my thoughts and prayers. I salute our brothers in Iraq. May our country embrace them always. They are fighting very bravely, just as we did in Vietnam.

Attention Bill Bounds record #2687--re: LST explosion in Danang harbor. Bill I think what you are remembering is the YFU-78 going up at bridge ramp in Feb. 69. I remember it so well because the 78 was our sister boat (I was on the 82), and she got the load that day that was first assigned to us. I had been in country about a month, was on watch that day and took a message from Literage H.Q. ordering us to pick up a load of ordinance at Bridge ramp and proceed to Dong Ha. We were preparing to get underway when I got another message from H.Q. cancelling our load..No explaination given, but a few minutes later I overheard the h.q. giving the 78 the same coded message we had gotten and laterthat day she got underway for bridge ramp. That night a huge explosion light up Danang harbor and we knew bridge ramp had been hit. Ordinance continued to cook off and explode all night. We found out the next morning the 78 was blown in half and 7 of her crew were killed, plus 3 or 4 of the ramp crew. It was suspected that vc swimmers had gotten in and planted satchel charges on the 78. A few days later while on a mail run into danang we passed bridge ramp and I got several pictures of what was left of the 78. It was God awful and when I thought about h.q. cancelling our orders and giving them to the 78 I was physically sick.. Those guys that died could have been us. We never did find out why H.Q. did that. From then on I knew I was in a War... God bless you brother and I'm glad you got home safe too. Let's never forget the ones that didn't.. MAX

I had to move out of the Special Forces camp A325 at Duc Hue when it was converted to a Ranger camp in 10/70 so I was sent to Tra Cu for a while. Not bad, when you compare it to FSB Gettysburg. The one question I have concerns a time when I was still at Duc Hue, the free fire zone to the north of Tra Cu, just under the Angel's Wing. I don't remember the date, but it was after we had gone into Cambodia. It was during the daytime and we began hearing a very loud noise coming from the southwest (Parrots Beak direction). Turns out it was a Navy amphibious craft (the type that rides on air) cruising through our area. It had to have come from Tra Cu's area. Does anyone know any details about this?
