Got to Guam and picked up Mon CTY as she was being refitted. Old WW2 LST that saw her last days after VN war. I was Chief RMCS and CMA. Had to scrownge almost everything we could find to get her in shape for river runs. One Skipper was LCDR Marnane. Other was a redhead LCDR from Boston.. Name?? RM1 was Fast Eddie Torrance. EMC Fowler..RM3 Clack.. Ran rivers from Vung Tau ..to .. Can Tho ..Quenohn?..Danang ..Con Son Island (Bad Trip) where we took prisoners from SVN (Possible Viet Cong) and chained women children and old men in our tank deck for the miserable trip to the Island. Worst couple days of my Navy carrer.. Could not beleive my eyes one day as there was the OLD USS Benawah .. a barracks ship that I'd been on in Naples Italy In '53.. We were tied up at Newport Pier when TET68 hit. Had to get out as VC were trying to blow up ships to block harbor.Made it! Thanks for great page...

Many good memories of the people I met while at NHA-BE. I have since lost contact will them all. After becoming such a fan of Seal Team 1 and the EOD Detatchment at NHA-BE that after my tour was up I went into the Diving Navy where I stayed until I left the Navy in 73 for the Gulf of Mexico oil fields where a diver could make a pretty good living. I am still here in the diving business searching the web for traces of past friends especially the ones I met at NHA-BE between 66 & 67.

I was the Program Manager from the Navy Mine Defense Lab, Panama City, Fl on development and deployment of the Drone Minesweeper (MSD) used to remotely cut mine control wires from shore using a chain drag. It was controlled from a PBR mothership. We deployed 6 to Nha Be in July 1967 for test and evaluation. Later, a total of 23 MSDs were built with many deployed throughout Vietnam through 1973. Our team of 4 civilians spent most of July 1967 sharing space on the Seal Team Barge at Nha Be for tests on the Saigon River. The evaluation was done by Navy Research and Development Unit, Vietnam (NRDU-V).

I always envied you guys. When I was there in 65 we were searching junks and going up the rivers in a Motor Whale boat. I saw my first Swift boat shortly before leaving Viet Nam. We were the first Brown Water sailors but no one remembers us. Getting shot at is no fun but in a whale boat you're sitting ducks. We were still using Thompson machine guns and BAR's. We had seven to a crew; sure would have liked the chance to serve on a Swift boat but didn't want to bad enough to re-enlist. Good Sailing to all you Swift Boat Sailors.

I first got in country in early 68 and voluntered for YFU's. Was put on the 73 as a CS3 and made many runs to Dong Ha and Cua Viet, Hue etc. Was on YFU 73 behind YFU 62 when it hit the mine and blew up. My very distant cousin, Ken Russell, CS2 was killed in the blast along with other friends. Later we sunk (YFU 73) at pretty much the same spot and when the boat was re-floated it was sent to Subic for refitting. I transfered to a brand new YFU 82 and except for the last three weeks in country spent my final days on the 82 (until June, 69). I was on the LCU 1492 for the last three weeks. Went on for my final 18 months on the USS Hunley out of Naval Weapons Station, Charleston, SC. Would like to hear from anyone on the 73 or 82. Great web sight! Keep up the good work. If I could remember more..I would be glad to write it down. I have a really hard time with names,wish I had written things down.First thing I remember is The Annapolis Hotel,and the very first time I was out front on the street, a cowboy on a hot rod bike zoomed by and jerked my new watch right off my wrist.I had the 16 sights on his back, but decided not to pull the trigger.What a wake up...Sent to Rid 42 for some months, then on to RAS 15 for the last part of tour. Had some good times in a Army bunker, just relaxing, and talking with Smitty, a Radioman off the Communication Boat.Hard nights on the river,but I am glad I was able to walk out of there.A lot of Memories.Spent a little free time in the President Hotel,with a fool called Hammer, who ate a steak with his hands in this fine Dining Resturant. When I arrived in country June 67 I went to MMAV Cam Ranh Bay. I worked in the shore shop for a time then helped build a dry dock. Then worked on FMS797? for awhile. They towed another FMS to Cam Ranh FMS811 I think and made me chief enginer. It took us a little time to get it ready. We took it to DaNang early 1968. I went home June 68.

A college friend of mine, LCDR Virgil Snyder, was deeply involved in riverine ops. I was in a 7th Flt liaison role and also headed up the fleet's public affairs efforts in country. Snyder, at my specific request, arranged a night patrol on a PBR in August '66 and accompanied me. It was one of two military experiences I shall never forget. The other occurred at the Black Virgin Mountain in the Parrot's Beach area of Tay Ninh province. During my tour, I participated in gunfire support ops north of DaNang, Sea Dragon ops against NVNese artillery in NVN, a trip into LAOS and the Plaine des Jarres and a hair-raising C1A landing under mortar fire at Dong Ha near the DMZ. None compared to that PBR mission on the Bassac.

Missouri has partial records and I can't prove I was there. My DD-214 is not good enough, eventhough my VN medals are listed. Spent less than 180 days IN-Country before transferring to NKP, Thailand. Found 4 witnesses who saw me there, who submitted sworn statments. Two of them served with me in the same units as listed. BVA Hearing pending after being denied twice. DFAS in Denver can't find my payroll file. 1973 fire did not affect Vietnam vets. So, what happened? Are there any Army rosters? NPRC claim rosters were not kept past 1966. So how were Air Force or Army lowly sergeants tracked? I feel like an undocumented Puerto Rican who honorably served our country. I remember going to Can Tho on a truck convoy after the Bin Thuy amo dump was blown up (April 1972?). We were all being moved about to other places due to Vietnamization. Any ideas are sincerly welcomed. I will not rest until one shred of official evidence is found. Thank you. I can't believe this has happened to me, and been depressed over it. My family tells me to give it up, but I can't. It's become a fight to honer my family name in recognition that I did in fact served.

I served with LT.J.G.Maitland & 5 other on Swift Boat #101 until it was sunk in 1969. I don't remember very many names of the guys on board other than a few last names, Banes & Barfield. We were stationed in DaNang for about 9 months. We did a night patrol and came under fire from both side of the river. Banes was shot in the chest. Hello to all my Brothers, I visited Beautiful Downtown Vung Tau, on my way to the "Tut", for a Tour and a half. I worked in the Electronics / Photo Lab. with some really great guy's. If I could play "Where are they Now", I sure would like to hear from my SHOP MATES, like Roy Geiger, Rodger Crow, Chief Walker, and Chief Wade. I was in on the fun, during the Tet Offensive, and the Fun Cruse to Subic Bay, and Tiawan. I think The Tut, got up to 12 KNOTS, on our way to the Phillipines. I cant believe 30 some odd years have passed. If anyone remembers me, I'm the guy who climbed the Main Mast, to work on the RADAR, when it broke. I played Guitar, Tenor Sax, and Harmonica, (Not all at the same time) when we would JAM, after the evening movie on the Helo Deck. Was on board the YR-71 in Danang and was on board during the move South to Vung Tau, Bhien Thuy and Tan Chau. Worked in Outside Repair, AC & R shop and was boat engineer on LCM6 boat for a while. I was trying to build a list of crewmen on the YR but much of my personal items were lost in a flood. What I remember most about the YR: The rocket attack that hit SCRF before we left Danang...and getting my head stitched from slamming into a locker on the YFNB2. Doing body recovery with Randy "River Rat" Jacobson. The young girl that was shot and her father tried to bring her to YR at Tan Chau for medical attention...and our fearless leader wouldn't allow them near the YR...and she died by the time they got her to the other boat. I remember the drinking parties in the Electrical Shop... and Tommy Walters...who never got a hair out of place during his whole tour of Vietnam... Jim Rice and his love letters and questionairs to half the women in California.. the cock fights on top of YFNB2, and my favorite memory..Donald Hannichek and my home made PBR made out of the P250 and aluminum boat.... Left the Navy after Vietnam...came home and joined the Army and played Army until 1990 and retired and moved back to California... In Ocotober of 1965 a bunch of us went from the training sessions at Coronado UDT School (indocturnation) and Camp Pendelton (weapons familiarization)to the ship yard at Bremerton, Washington. There we put three old LCU's in service (from the mothball fleet). These were the 989, 916, and on other whose number I can not recall. We were then loaded into the USS Catamount (an old LSD with a proud record-a WWII vet). Six weeks later we arrived in 'Nam. I was on the 989, BMC Fuller was in-charge. We were the first LCU into Chu Lai (delivering ordinance). We were shot at there too-by Marines. Little did they know that we had our own Marine detachment aboard. I've forgotten his name but we called him "Jarboon" and he was treated as a member of the crew. He had a "6-by" and a water camel headed for Danang. We also had 8 UDT guys attached to our boat (offically-there were orders signed and everything). After Chu Lai we returned to the Catamount and went to DaNang. When we arrived there in December of '65, we were the only LCU's. In 1966 we were transfered to Literage Command,NSA DaNang, and our boats were called YFU's, it was a political "thing". The 989 became YFU63. We operated within DaNang for awhile and then we were sent up to Hue with a load of 105mm rounds. After that we made several trips to Hue and Chu Lai-those were the only destinations available to us at the time. We once pulled a half sunk LCVP from an AKA off the sand bar at the mouth of the Perfume River (the Navy was more worried about the .50 Cal. machine gun on board than the boat itself). We also made a trip up the "right" branch of the Perfume River to about 7 miles south of what was to become the DMZ to see if LCU's could make the trip. We once again had several UDT guys, and a 1/2 dozen Recon Marines. We were so brave then. We then returned to the blue Pacific and went north to a beach that the UDT guys checked out as a possible landing sight-5 miles ABOVE what would become the DMZ-brave and stupid. Luckily, nothing happened. I guess Charlie could'nt believe it either. I left when the 63 was getting ready to go to Subic Bay for an overhaul and upgrading. My question here is, does anyone know what happened to the YFU 63? Also, if R.C.Riddle, GMG3 (2 20mm cannons, 4 .45cal. automatics, 4 M1s, and 2 Thompsons, and we had a missle tech as our GM-another first) is out there, or En Hart (off the Atlanta IX-304) or Ganetta, send an e-mail. I've already found our cook, Eugene Hansen. He's retired, he made Chief and exchanges Christmas cards with Chief Fuller and "Stormy", our Qm. Memory's fading after 35+ yrs. Came aboard "Frannie(benjo)maru" in Subic Bay. Slept in the handling room first night(port side). crossed the little puddle to Cam Rahn to load bullets in the rain Christmas day then southward to kick off "Deck House 5" (cover of life mag.) Came aboard as Sn, A- school in Yokosuka to make Qmsn. Two years of fun and frolic(right!)Can remember some names but not faces like Nick FacklerQm1 and John L. GMG and a few others. Time is the bane of man. Just went looking one day for LSMR525 and found this page. Saw some pictures of the ol' girl and it jogged a few memories. Left "Frannie" a QM3 and went home for thirty days then on to "deigo" to ACU1. Got out in June of 70. Would like to here from some of the guys from the ol' "Rocket Rainmaker". Donald and his slingshot were a reality.

I was with the Australian Forces at Nui Dat an old rubber plantation near Baria. Once while in vung tau at the us px I met a guy named Fred Tolliver s Chief PO who was at one time a submariner. Anyway Fred said to me to visit Cat Lo any time I was passing from vung tau to nui dat. And I did visit Fred on a few occaisions, and had a cold beer with him. He asked me on one visit what we needed at Nui Dat and I told my men could use a cold beer. Weeks and weeks later a jeep with a 50 cal on the back came screaming in to our area with CPO Fred Tolliver driving and a seaman on the 50 cal, also on board he had a 40 gallon drum filled with canned beer and ice (we had no refrigeration at that time) That night we were firing our 105mm howitzers at various targets, and Fred asked could he fire one of the guns, and of course he could much to Freds delight, a great guy. I last met Fred by accident in an US club in Saigon and he was on his way back Stateside, we had a cold beer together said our farewells, didn't exchange addresses and went on our seperate ways. I found the following on the internet. I think it is disterbing if it is true. What are your thoughts? ______________________________________________________________________ This was written by a retired admiral and Annapolis graduate. The item offers no direct testimony about Kerry, but it does provide informed background useful in assessing what Kerry seems to have claimed for himself. It confirms information I have received from other sources. Our media should be demanding that Senator Kerry open his service records in the same way they demanded that of President Bush regarding his NG service. I was in the Delta shortly after he [Kerry] left. I know that area well. I know the operations he was involved in well. I know the tactics and the doctrine used. I know the equipment. Although I was attached to CTF-116 (PBRs) I spent a fair amount of time with CTF-115 (swift boats), Kerry's command. Here are my problems and suspicions: (1) Kerry was in-country less than four months and collected, a Bronze Star, a Silver Star and three purple hearts. I never heard of anybody with any outfit I worked with (including SEAL One, the Sea Wolves, Riverines and the River Patrol Force) collecting that much hardware so fast, and for such pedestrian actions. The Swifts did a commendable job. But that duty wasn't the worst you could draw. They operated only along the coast and in the major rivers (Bassac and Mekong). The rough stuff in the hot areas was mainly handled by the smaller, faster PBRs. (2) Three Purple Hearts, but no limp. All injuries so minor that no time lost from duty. Amazing luck. Or he was putting himself in for medals every time he bumped his head on the wheel house hatch? Combat on the boats was almost always at close range. You didn't have minor wounds. At least not often. Not three times in a row. Then he used the three purple hearts to request a trip home eight months before the end of his tour. Fishy. (3) The details of the event for which he was given the Silver Star make no sense at all. Supposedly, a B-40 was fired at the boat and missed. Charlie jumps up with the launcher in his hand, the bow gunner knocks him down with the twin .50, Kerry beaches the boat, jumps off, shoots Charlie, and retreives the launcher. If true, he did everything wrong. (a) Standard procedure when you took rocket fire was to put your stern to the action and go balls to the wall. A B-40 has the ballistic integrity of a frisbie after about 25 yards, so you put 50 yards or so between you and the beach and begin raking it with your .50's. (b) Did you ever see anybody get knocked down with a .50 caliber round and get up? The guy was dead or dying. The rocket launcher was empty. There was no reason to go after him (except if you knew he was no danger to you just flopping around in the dust during his last few seconds on earth, and you wanted some derring do in your after-action report). And we didn't shoot wounded people. We had rules against that, too. (c) Kerry got off the boat. This was a major breach of standing procedures. Nobody on a boat crew ever got off a boat in a hot area. EVER! The reason was simple. If you had somebody on the beach your boat was defenseless. It coudn't run and it couldn't return fire. It was stupid and it put his crew in danger. He should have been relieved and reprimanded. I never heard of any boat crewman ever leaving a boat during or after a firefight. Something is fishy. Here we have a JFK wannabe (the guy Halsey wanted to court martial for carelessly losing his boat and getting a couple people killed by running across the bow of a Jap destroyer) who is hardly in Vietnam long enough to get good tan, collects medals faster than Audie Murphy in a job where lots of medals weren't common, gets sent home eight months early, requests separation from active duty a few months after that so he can run for Congress, finds out war heros don't sell well in Massachusetts in 1970 so reinvents himself as Jane Fonda, throws his ribbons in the dirt with the cameras running to jump start his political career, gets Stillborn Pell to invite him to address Congress and Bobby Kennedy's speechwriter to do the heavy lifting, winds up in the Senate himself a few years later, votes against every major defense bill, says the CIA is irrelevant after the Wall came down, votes against the Gulf War, a big mistake since that turned out well, decides not to make the same mistake twice so votes for invading Iraq, but oops, that didn't turn out so well so he now says he really didn't mean for Bush to go to war when he voted to allow him to go to war. I'm real glad you or I never had this guy covering our flanks in Vietnam. I sure don't want him as Commander in Chief. I hope that somebody from CTF-115 shows up with some facts challenging Kerry's Vietnam record. I know in my gut it's wildy inflated. And fishy.

Need information regarding repair records 1968-1969 Dong Tam. A-111-1 took a rocket hit in the Starboard Bow just below the Boat numbers(Date Unknown)piercing both the outer and iner hull right, exploding into a 5 gallon can of paint in the forward locker. I am looking for any records of the repairs or an after action report that might establish the date of the incident and confirm the damages. This is a great site. Good to see that the Brown Water NAvy is not forgotten. We were a unique chapter in the history of the US NAvy. Keep up the good work.

WOW! Describe your life in 100 words or less: I arrived in Country in August '68 and spent the next 6-7 months as advisor to RAG-28. With my assistant, Chief Electrician Joe McGowan, we promoted joint operations with US 25th Div at Cu-Chi (they were only 5K up the road from Phu Cuong) and successfully began regular joint operations up the Saigon River to Dau Tieng. We made the newspapers several times as we busted large ammunition caches (on the biggest one we took out 5 tons of ammunition, 5 "under construction" Sampans, etc.) The spooks were fairly sure that VC region III HQ was somewhere near the river and we got into some pretty heavy fights as our presence became prominent. One night, a RPC from the RAG was posted upstream to wait in ambush - it worked. My counterpart would never tell me the whole story because it was absolutely "Non-reg", but the VC convoy our guys 'bushed included a VC paymaster who was carrying the payroll. My counterpart distributed "prize money" to the entire crew of the RAG! Very Naval, very cool - he was Pres. Thieu's nephew and wasn't even supposed to be in combat. In a firefight later, he was wounded and Commodore Chon got called on the carpet for letting him get "exposed". I was brevetted to LCDR and sent to Saigon to advise the Naval Commander of the Capital Military District. He was a very sharp guy who really didn't need much advice and the joint staff I had to serve with was really DIS-jointed. If anyone reading this knows the whereabouts of Joe McGowan, EMC(retired) please let me know. We used large quantities of Agent Orange to defoliate the riverbanks (P-500 and a Water Buffalo in the well deck of an LCM-6) and I've always been concerned for his health as a result. It never occurred to me that a site like this was out there and it is most interesting, especially for those of us who served aboard the YRBM-16. I was an EN3 then and EN2 "Pappy" relieved me in the engineroom the night she was bombed. His name, I think I will never forget. Most of the other crew members' names I can't remember. The blast woke us up and as we crawled out of our racks, power went out and we managed to get out with light from battle lanterns. I finally got topside stunned and confused, wandered around in sort of a daze. The decks were wet with diesel fuel and I slipped and fell. The word came to abandon ship and I got into a LCM that took us to an army compound. I saw the photos of the fireball engulfing the "16" in flames on this website, but I don't remember actually seeing it. That must have occurred later when we were at the army compound. Afterwards I remember we worked in shifts fighting the fire once we were able to get safely back on board. The rest of my tour on the "16" was spent doing clean-up and getting it ready for tow to the yards. It was an unforgetable experience of "terrorism-VietCong style". I got new orders in February 1968 to the AS16 in Charleston SC. Another crewmember's name comes to mind...........John York, EN2.............anybody know his whereabouts?

Ship selected by pres. J F K , to turn around 26 Russian freighters, each carrying 29 multiple nuclear warheads. Message was at any cost, but don't sink them .We were a phantom squadron with no hull #'s, which were painted off enroute.We had a big black E on bridge and 2 hash marks under it.., for 3 consecular years of Battle Effiency Readiness, earned!! Largest LST for it's day ......448 foot long 26,000 Tons We turned/ or persuaded them to turn / armour piercing ammo they got the message, We - All Crew/ Officers should have received a ribbon for The Cuban Missle Crisis and the major role we played... Any shipmates that were aboard Wood County LST 1178, there is a reunionin Oct, 2004, so send me an email if interested, should be a fun time. I was one of 3 helmsman , never thought i'd ever be able to (drive), so to speak something 448 feet long but i loved it and miss it, you don't get along with everyone, because of different personalities, but eek out at least a 99 % compatibility ratio. My tour was enjoyable , even the few i didn't get along with all the time didn't take away my enjoyment of navy life and all of my interesting shipmates. I loved the feel of 6 8,000hp diesel engines under me when on the helm.................Indescrible!!!!!!!!!

Gunner on LCPL's (Lima Patrols)on the Cua Viet from November '68 to March '69. Rest of the time on Danang Harbor Patrol. Don't really remember to much. I know one crewmember was nicknamed "Shorty" and there was "Engine Mike". Cooper was one of the boat captains. Lost the 23 boat just before I got there to a mine, all hands lost. Attached to Harbor Clearance Unit One, Subic Bay. Shipfitter and Salvage Diver. Would rotate in country on 89-day TDYs. Spent time in Cat Lo waiting turn to saddle up and go downriver for salvage operations. Stopped at numerous firebases (US and VN) along the way...names not remembered. Located and tried to salvage sunken gunboats of all sizes and shapes. Most successful...some not. Some areas quiet with enemy long gone...others not. Got out in 1973 and started college with GI Bill in 1975. BA degree and commission with Air Force in 1979. Retired as 0-4 in 1997. Currently supervisor at Home Depot in Fresno and President of the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America. See www.vva.org for information. Cheers to all. Thanks for this great site. I was an advisor and was assigned to Opbase Chau Doc. Trouble was, when I got to Chau Doc there was no Opbase so I spent a fews weeks at the MACV (?) compound (it had a nice bar and some very crazy occupants). I was then assigned temporarily to the YRBM 20 waiting for the Seabees to built the base. I worked in the radio shop. Saw M*A*S*H on board. Stood watch on the bridge. I can remember always having to holler down every half hour or so to the poor guy down on the forecastle to get him to pull the collar on the anchor chain. It must have been heavy. After a few weeks I eventually got to the Opbase and the Vietnamese PBRs showed up so we could be "advisors." We got to see a lot of the area. I can still remember some of the Vietnamese we learned at Coronado. Unfortunately, I am embarrassed to admit that I have forgotten all of the names of my fellow advisors. So if you're out there and read this, "Hi." I can't remember your names but I remember all your faces and the all good times and bad times we shared. They were crazy times for sure.

I served in submarines, well after the Vietnam War. My wife, however, was born in Missouri, just after her parents escaped from Saigon in 1975 via the care of Admiral Shelton in Subic. My father inlaw is Captain Truoc Do, SVN. He graduated from the Vietnamese Naval Academy in Nha Trang, served on an open-water skimmer, then served the remainder of the war as a brownwater skipper. If anyone remembers Truoc, I'd love to hear your stories. Also, although low probability, I'd like to find a way of determining whether there were any medals or citations pending for Truoc that he may never have found out about since Saigon was overrun. I served on a 6 man Royal Australian Navy EOD Team in Danang in 1970/71 under the direct command of USN Headquarters at Camp Tien Sha (Capt MA Horn USN). In late December 1970 during an EOD deployment to Cua Viet for 10 days I patrolled out to a beached MCMV with a hull number of 116. The vessel had been on the beach just south of the entrance to the Cua Viet River for some time and was obviously originally built as a USN vessel. I was sent to Viet Nam to join the crew of the LST 902 in 1969, and spent approx 6 months delivering important stuff like beer, soda, and cement up and down the many unknown rivers for all the troops that needed a refreshing warm drink. Later we went to Da Nang and then ventured home to the US a long Slooooooow trip at 8 knots. After decommisoning the ship I was flown back to Viet Nam to join the crew of the USS Tutuila and spent approx. 18 months of bliss in Nah Beh drinking beer and enjoying the young girls on the strip outside of the base. I'm not sure the dates but we then floated the old girl to Taiwan where we turned the ship over to the Chinese Navy (lucky them). I was then flown to the US where I joined the real Navy and was placed on board the USS Ocallahan DE 1051, and there I was lucky enough to be sent on 2 west pack cruises off the coast of Viet Nam, blasting the hell out of something, total with the 3 in country tours I did 5 all together. I can say that of all things I remember in my life, Viet Nam is something that will allways be with me.
