Record 2399 I logged onto this site years ago and have since changed my e-mail address to Accurateshots[ at ]aol.com, so make a note of it and e-mail me when you have an interesting flashback about good Ol' Song Ong Doc.
Just a thought. I was looking through this site and came upon some mention of some "Psy-Ops" equipment. Does anyone recall having that equipment installed on our boat for an experiment? The equipment consisted of 2-sets of enlongated speaker trumpets and some kind of major powered amplifyer. We never had the occasion to turn it on, but were told to prepare to poop your pants if you got in front of the device. It also was supposed to render the people it was aimed at indesposed. I trusted the 50's more than that thing.
God Bless all of you boat people.

Record 2397 Read your comments about the Brown Water Navy on the web site. Your comments were very informative. I kept a "Stars and Stripes" article on STAB Boats, printed summer of 1970, but lost it.
I was stationed on an outpost of hutches, built on barges, anchored down stream from Phu Xuyen. A group of STAB Boats was first assigned there, then PBR's followed.
I was a Seabee Construction Electrician at the time responsible for keeping the lights working. I don't remember anyone's name but was wondering if you or someone out there passed through the area of what was, what I thought, considered the Grand Canel?
Thanks for your time and help. This is an interesting Web Site.

Record 2379 This is a great site that shows both vets and the curious how the Brown Water Navy fought its war. Mine started with the Mobile Riverine Force (TF-117) out of Dong Tam on my first tour in 1969. I came back for a second tour with MST-2, Det. CHARLIE at SEA FLOAT/SOLID ANCHOR at Nam Can in 1970.
SEAL/UDT support was a very interesting and dangerous business. I will never forget the guys of HA(L)-3, Det. 1 "Seawolves" that saved our bacon on more than one occasion. I was there when the USS Krishna (ARL-38) was mined; the VNN LSSL HQ-225 was mined and sunk; and the USS Canon (PG-90) was shot-up twice in less than a month -- the last time wounded half the crew.
I'm glad I didn't go back to SOLID ANCHOR to finish out the tour of the detachment that relieved us in November 1970. They took two B-40 hits that wounded the OIC, two enlisted, and killed the LDNN interpreter and the SEAL/LDNN advisor.

Record 2368 I joined APL-55 at Phu Quoc Island in the Gulf of Siam, where we supported TF-115 PCF's and WPB's patrolling the waters south of RVN. In October of 67, we were ordered to reconfigure to support PBR's in the Mekong Delta. Our job would be to replace YRBM-16 that had been severely damaged by a mine the previous year.
In early November,we were relieved on station by a spanking new APL, and with a skeleton crew, were towed by a PacFlt ATF to Sasebo Japan for refit. It was quite a voyage. We all lived in the wardroom and everybody had a turn as cook. I remember passing through the Taiwan Strait at night and looking at the lights on the PRC shore and wondering what would happen if the tow hawser broke. AS I recall, we also had a bit of difficulty with a storeroom back aft which thanks to a backed up eductor received a salt water hydrostatic test.
Anyhow we made it to Sasebo. I was given a one million dollar budget and told to configure the APL as a PBR support craft. With the able help of the Chief Engineer, CWO John Payton and Supply Officer, LT David I. Kasse, I sat down with a stack of blank work requests and an adding machine. We designed a lifting crane using an "I" beam and electric winch to pick up the boats; David reconfigured a part of the officer berthing area as storerooms; we fitted grey Herculite awnings all around topside; converted the ship's office to a comm center to send and receive online traffic; fitted four 81mm naval mortars in gun tubs topside; and made a number of habitability improvements. We also drydocked the "Apple" and gave her bottom a cleaning and preserving. The SRF at Sasebo was absolutely great! No red tape, no fuss, just work, work work. By early December 87, we were ready to go, and after a really great farewell party for all hands, we were under tow for RVN. We arrived at Cat Lo on the Saigon River in mid December, and began loading stores and ammunition. We worked right through Christmas Day, and shortly afterward we were ready to go. We were towed up the My Tho to Dong Tam, where we dropped the hook outside the harbor entreance.
River Section 534, eight PBR Mk II's Lt. Ron Wolin commanding and my USNA classmate Lt. (later VAdm.) Bill Earner as XO, were there to meet us. It soon became apparent we were too far from 534's patrol areas; the hours on the engines were building up fast. So I tried to move the barge using an LCM-8 on a bridle and an LCM-6 on each quarter. We drove around a little, and it seemeed to work pretty well, so I requested permission from my boss, Capt. Burns W. Spore, COMNAVSUPPACT Saigon, to move up river on my own power. He sent his Chief of Staff, Cdr "Doc" Cranney, down to see if I was safe for solo. We demonstrated a move for the CoS, he said "OK", and that afternoon, to the blare of our "Maserati Air Horn", we got underway and made it to the junction of the Ham Luong and My Tho rivers, taking out several dozen fish stakes on the way. The next couple of weeks were spent getting used to how the barge could be handled. As a matter of policy, we shifted position every day. The propulsion method worked fine, as long as I didn't get in a strong following current, in which case the whole business, SPL, Ammi Pontoons and Beer Barge all tended to swap ends. At this point, the only thing to do was drop anchor. We had chosen our anchorage, whether we liked it or not. About this time, a squad of SEALS from Can Tho joined our little flotilla, and stayed with us for the duration.
It was a good thing we learned to move the old girl, because when TET 68 happened, we were able to move around well enough to help out several PBR sections that found themselves without a home with their shore bases overrun or cut off. We made it as far as Vinh Long on our own power. We took aboard River Section 535 commanded by LT Jack Doyle in addition to 534. Things were cramped, but we all worked very well with one another and continued to conduct operations agaist the VC until I completed my tour and was relieved as OinC in April. Shortly thereafter, the Medical Officer Gerry Dooher wrote me a letter telling me the barge was on its way to something called "Giant Slingshot."
Some time during this period, in response to a letter we sent to NavSea, APL-55 was officially redesignated YRBM-18.
Some of the finest men I've ever known I met on YRBM-18. I especially remember "Smitty", a hard-boiled Mustang lieutenant who served as 534's Maintenance Officer. He was a natural leader and a superbly competent engineer, who tragically was MedEvace'd one afternoon with severe gunshot wounds suffered on patrol. My own offiocers and men were the very best; whatever I asked of them, they did. They were brave and dedicated and worked their asses off to keep those boats running and the PBR sailors well fed and comfortable. I have lots and lots of stories, but I've gone on too long already. I hope my rambling account has provided a few historical reference points.

I'll never forget them and what they (we) did. I was with the Harbor Patrol in Dang Nang. 1968 / 1969. Stayed at Camp Tien Shau. Never forget riding in "skimers" and throwing gernades into the water around the deep water piers. So many memeories. The 12 hour days, patroling on Christmas Day, incoming at night, the tracers in the sky. But most of all, the good friends that were made, and lost. I'll never forget. Welcome home brothers.

He was killed while sitting on the twin 50's while on patrol three weeks after I took over his job. Went to his memorial but can't remember his name. Record 2334 After I was moved from the NAVFORV(Roadrunner) ET Shop to the Cholon compound I was the ET1 that went to Japan and outfitted the 20 along with 4 other guys. When I got back to Nam I rode the 20 up the river to the "Y". I left Nam in April 1969, so I was only on the barge for a couple of months. One morning during that time I got two secondaries from floating clumps. Then I saw a styrofoam cup floating upside-down over near the shore moving very slowly. I fired round after round at a location under the cup with the M-1 carbine as it floated upside-down toward the port bow. When the cup got within 50 yds. I had the deck watch to toss a few grenades. Amazingly the cup kept coming so at 25yds I had the deck watch to drop two grenades at the same time. Thank the Lord whoever was under that cup decided to head back to shore. There the cup sat upside down all morning. I pointed it out to my relief at noon and we both surmised that whomever was under it had swam away and left the cup on a reed. There are other stories and I think I may have a picture or two. This was my first ET shop and NILSEN, DAVID NICHOL ETN2, NUNN,GARY JOSEPH ETN2, HANSON, JOHN DALE ETN3, RANKIN, RAYMOND CHAR ETN3, were all a part of our ET gang.

Looking at the photos of the "Crusader" cobras landing and taking off got the hair standing up on the back of my neck. If it hadn't been for the support of personnel on these ships we would have never been able to complete our missions. However, while the landings were to a small area (which we had been trained to do in the states) the take-offs were exhilerating noising over the side of the ship and trying to fly instead of sinking (this was not taught in the states).

Record 2308 I am looking for anyone who would remember me from the time I spent at Solid Anchor (formerly Sea Floats.) I was there from Jan.1971 toJune1971. Do you remember the heavy mortar attacks at that base and specifically those on Towers 6 4, and 3 when General Quarters was called on those mortar attacks? Because I refused to pick up the severed head of a So. Vietnamese and take the body to sick bay, the captain made me burn shit for 3weeks.I was 17 when I arrived at Solid Anchor and was nicknamed “THE KID”, but I don't remember who gave me that nickname. I was field upgraded 2 times because they sent me out on the boats. I never received any combat action acknowledgement in my file. That is one reason the govt. has disqualified my disability claim. I would appreciate any and all remembrances you may have so that I can verify to the govt. that I was in "combat" and "action" zones during that period of time. If so, would you please reply to my email with any specifics you may recall. I know that this can be a difficult request and I apologize and appreciate it. Sincerely, Francis Bentley, THE KID

Record 2301 I was in Nam from May, 70 until the end of Feb., 72. (Sealords)
After two days in country, I was sent to the Benawah as it advanced toward Phnom Penh in May (70). We then sat on the Vietnam/Cambodian border in the middle of the river for about a month retransmitting the air support and medevac requests for the advancing ground troops.
From there I went to work for LCDR Schellhouse at the Binh Thuy Naval Ops Center to coordinate intel research and for training the VN's. I collected Intel info and made maps for the Black Pony pilots for their daily and emergency requested air support sorties, plus various Seal and Dufflebag recons.
While keeping track of enemy and friendly movements on a big map on the wall in the Ops center I had a pretty good idea that something was brewing in the Song Ong Doc area. LCDR Schellhouse flew us down in the LOH to brief the commander as to what we were seeing collecting.
An estimated 1,000+ VC/NVA were moving into the area. It was around the 17th or 18th of Oct. Seeing that picture of the MATSB and that little tiny spot of a pad that he landed on really caused me to appreciate how great a pilot he was. Especially when we took off after briefing.
He was concerned about receiving small arms fire so he lifted the helo up a few feet from the pad and then shot forward and dropped down low to the ground to build up speed. We were so low that he had to hop over a fifty gallon barrel that loomed up in front of us all of a sudden. Then across the beach where I thought he was going to pick up a handful of sand to keep as a souvenir and over the surf and out to sea before we zoomed up into the sky.. It was the most exhilarating ride I had ever had in my entire life.
A few days later, I was told that you guys were hit and that two men were lost on the first round fired. I was told that if we had not flown there to brief, there could have been more lives lost. It still hurt.
Some of you guys used to come into Binh Thuy and we would go down to Can Tho to drink beer and mess with the girls.. I was known as Wes.
The Vietnamese girls called me (Low Da). Probably cause my head was shaped like a bullet. We had a quaint little place to relax that had a bullet-riddled wall that some guys might remember. I remember you, Joe Flowers cause we flew over together, but my name recollection for others has slipped by and I want to apologize for that. I do hope that everyone is doing well and if you want to, please E-mail or call me at (712) 255-2540.
