Pat Ford was my cousin. The official story of how he entered the water last, was shot through his lung, and then found at the bottom of the river doesn't square with the photo you have of the PBR 750 beached and burning. Anybody out there also have info on how his body might have been "stolen," and then "rescued?" I heard that story while dining with the crew of the FFG-54 in Everett, Washington. How could that happen if his body was retrieved from the bottom of the river (the official story given to his family)? What is the truth here? The FFG-54 crew still can't seem to get the ship's logo right. They are currently using the Ford Motor Company logo. Talk about the fusion of the Military and the Industrial Sectors.....

I came in-country 5/68 and was assigned to the armory at the helo pad. I came in the same time as Hank, I think they named the pad in his memory after he was killed in early 69. The only other airdale on the pad at that time was ABH3 Peck and myself. Nha Be was still a mess from the May Tet, we worked long hours re-stocking ammo and building rockets. One of the guys had just returned from the hospital in Japan, the barracks area where the armory crew bunked was hit by a rocket during the Feb. Tet and he was wounded. I stood duty at night as a shore patrol and later after spending 29 days at 3rd. field in Saigon I worked night check at the pad. I was sent to An Thoi in the early fall of 68 on a 90 day TAD. I was down there to operate the air strip until another ABH2 arrived to relieve me. I requested to stay and did so until Dec.69 I often think of Hank, although I didn't serve with him but 4 or 5 months. He was an ABF2 with about 8 years in. I remember that he had a wife and a 10 year old Son back in Fl. He passed on R&R to save money for his family. Hank was always a straight arrow, he always stayed in while the rest of us went out on the beach drinking and raising hell. I hope that his son knows what a good and thoughtful guy he was. I wish that I had been there for him.

I served on ATC-112-9 from Dec 1967 to August 1968, as BM-3 coxswain, when I and three of my boat crew were wounded and sent home. Just happen to surf in from the MRFA web site. I have been trying to locate some of my old shipmates off of tango-9. So far I have not had much luck, I guess they do not cruise these web sites. Too bad, these are some outstanding sites. While looking at some of the pictures I noticed a tango boat that was mined on the Qua Viet river. I was there when she was blown up by a 750 lb. magnetic mine. They were lead boat in the right column of a mine sweeping operation we did every morning, I was in the second boat, left column. It was sad that only one man survived that explosion. I was good friends with the coxswain, who did not make it. Well if any knows what happened to Andy Greif, Walter Evans, Al Ganster, Art Hill, Dwane Gardner, or Tom Hinton from tango-9 let me know at my email address. Again this is a great web site.

This Veterans day on PBS, there will be a documentary called "Be good, Smile Pretty" about the search of a daughter whose father was killed in Vietnam when she was three months old and her effort to find out everything about her father. 58 thousand plus lost their lives in Vietnam and so did 20,000 plus children lose one of their parents in that war. My prayers got out not only to the men and women that died in VN, but to their kids and families that live with that pain today and not ever knowing them.

I am researching a story concerning a member of NAVFORV who served from Aug 1968 to Aug 1969 but his story is hard to believe. He states he was with MACV up north and along with 200 ARVN was captured but escaped after some helos killed (by mistake) all of the ARVN and his NVA guards. He E&E for 11 days and picked up by Army unit. This happened in May of 1969. He was a Marine StaffSgt named Wiggins. I would appreciate any infor about this or him. I am aMarine vet of Nam and presently teach college history. I do not want to include a lie in my work. I do know that he did indeed serve with NAVFORV. Jim Donovan

I was a boat coxswain in "L" Div. on the BAYFIELD APA-33 from late 1964 to 1966. We shuttled Marines, ordinance, and equipment from Okinawa to Danang. We also carried the Korean Tiger Division from Pusan, Korea to Viet Nam. My boat was LCVP-8. We supported Operation Starlight and made the first boat landing in wartime conditions since the Korean war. In 1966 in response to a request for volunteers to go in country Viet Nam, I volunteered thinking that I would go to PBR school but instead went to Valejo, California to recommission the USS Harnett County LST-821 on August 20, 1966. We first beached at Del Mar, California and loaded 39 Marine vehicles then got underway. We arrived in Danang, Viet Nam Jan. 13, 1967 offloaded and proceeded to Vung Tau where we started our river patrols. We had 10 PBR's and 2 Seawolf Huey helocopters assigned to us. I ended up going to heaven and becoming a Storekeeper. Probably the only SK with a Coxswain arrow patch on his right sleeve. I took care of all ships storerooms and was the PBR Storekeeper. I also took care of the ships subsistance records. Needless to say I was doing a little of everything. Working with the PBR'S I reported directly to the Ships Captain. He told me that he didn't want more than two boats out of action at one time, so I ended up doing a lot of bartering with the PBR Outpost along the rivers. One little plastic part for the Jacuzzi pumps seemed to be the hardest to get. It probably didn't cost more than a couple of dollars but it could put a PBR out of action. I have traded Officers silverware for those little jewel's to keep those boats running. I left the Harnett Cty. around June 1968. I would like to get some pictures from anyone that served aboard either ship in those time periods. This is a great site and it is good NOT TO FORGET. Bless you all.

I arrived at Tan San Nhut Air Force Base on June 19, 1966 and remained there for a week or so for "in-country-processing" I then went to Binh Thuy Air Base, located about 70 miles south of Saigon in the Mekong Delta. A short time after arriving there I experienced my first mortar ( or recoilless-rifle ) attack, where a fellow air-man ( A1C Millard "Lee" Lehman ) was KIA, not more than 20 feet from me!! This was my early introduction to Vietnam, and it scared the HELL out of me. I said to myself, "I've got a whole year of this ahead of me?". A BIG difference for a city boy from the large city of Springfield, Mass. Anyone who was stationed there with me will remember me as a popular guy who was very free-minded and always got in trouble, especially my superiors. I finally got me 2nd. stripe there (A2C) and promptly got busted down to one stripe, A3C. About a month or two later, I got my 2nd. stripe back, from Captain Glass, but my DD214 shows me as being honorably discharged as an A3C. I really don't care. Our base got hit (by rocket's, mortar's, ect.) many times during my 12 month tour there, so I made the best of it by having my fun my own way; AND I did my job, and I did it right! I was a Security Guard there and one evening while the Devil Flight (which I soon joined) was lining up for guard mount, they didn't know that mortars were in-bound. I screamed and yelled "10-49" (IN-COMING), where as they all made it safely to a near-by bunker just as the mortars began landing where they (and 1st. Lt. Nakagawa) were standing just a few moments ago!! Hours later, after everything quieted down, Lt. Nakagawa came to my bunker and Thanked me for what I did. I promptly yelled at him and gave him a piece of my mind for not having an air-man listening to a radio at guard mount!! After all, that's how I knew about the "10-49". From then on, ALL guard mounts had a turned-on radio present. I remember seeing 2 ARVN helicoptors collide over the Bassac River during the day, while I was guarding the ammo-dump. I saw their soldier's falling out of them as both chopper's crashed into the river. I heard NOTHING on the radio, so I called it in to A1C John Wolfe, who was in the air-craft control tower (I received no response from CSC). Airman Wolfe (who later was promoted to Staff Sergeant, along with A1C Dave Morgan) contacted air-rescue and three lives were saved. John Wolfe and Dave Morgan (and all the other air-man there) were very good friends of mine. I was well liked. We would get one day off a month, and I ofter went there with the NCO's, such as Sgt. Banks, Sgt. Bunker, and T.Sgt. Gibson. Our NCO Commander, M.Sgt. Tuggle, and his room-mate T.Sgt. Moody actually had a sand-bagged bunker in their room. We had a Captain Harris who stuttered very badly, and wasn't well liked by anyone. At guard mount he would try to say "get your weapons off your shoulders", and instead ended up saying "get your shoulders off your weapons". And I'm going to put my life in this guy's hands?, I DON'T THINK SO!!! Anyone that was there, and reading this, certainly remembers all this, and me. I don't have a hell of a lot going for me, but I seemed to be blessed with a unusual good memory; which has served me well during my life. I have no paper work or records to look at, but I remember the faces AND NAMES of almost everyone that was there with me. So how about it?, are any of you guys out there? : Mark Bilgrad, Dinko, Bob Wilcox, Willie Young, Gerald Taylor?, etc. etc. I was posted right beside the huge hangers the night they were hit, with a whole lot of ARMED aircraft inside, They all blew up, M-20's exploding everywhere. The SAT Team was established while I was there. The revertments (enclosed walls for the aircraft parked out in the open) were just starting to be built when I left. Any of you guys remember the free sandwiches I used to mysteriously get at night, and then pass them out to everyone? Remember the 20 pound cooked turkey I had in our barrack's, on Thanksgiving Eve? For those of you who never figured it out, the Officer's Club was short one turkey the next day. I had to crawl under the long metal cooking tables and over the cook's feet while holding a hot cooked turkey, but I did it. Our two dogs ("Suzie & J.P., remember them ?) ate good that night too. Life is what you make of it, and I wasn't about to have a long, sad, drawn-out year there. Soooo, let me know how you're all doing. I'm in terrific shape and I'm ready to party. Waiting to hear from you, I'm Tom "dumb-dumb" Sarnacki. :)

Spent most of my tour, after TET68, in An Phu. Spent time on the YRBM20. Met, and became friend with many of the PBR crews that tied up there. Had many beers with the crew who came into the MACV TM 64 bar, and have good memories of a PBR with 3.5 rocket launchers on either side of the con. The guys kept us well supplied, did some trading with the cooks on the YRBM. VC/NVA flags etc. for food. Thanks guys you are all remembered.

In response to Glenn Shindler's email . . . I was starting to wonder if I imagined the YRBM-16 or if I was the only one who served on it . . . all correspondence on this website seems to be about the YRBM 20 & 21. I was MR3, some called me "Smitty". I frequented the "Beer Barge" and played the drums with our make-shift band which consisted of guitar, drums and a lot of drunk soloists. I also made and installed the windvane at the top of the crowsnest for the helos landing and take-off. And, if I remember correctly, I caught "Hell" from you on several occasions, once when I went touring in Saigon while on a trip to pick up new glasses. I also built a scale fiberglass model of the PBR's which I managed to get home . . . my wife threatened to throw it out on several occasions, but I talked her out of it. Now that we are older, she thinks it's pretty neat and wants me to complete it. Like a lot of the guys on the "16", we worked hard and long hours and lived for that 4th day when we could take time off and go ashore. Then we (sometimes, literally) fell back onto the "16" and started over it all over again. Ironically, I enlisted in the Navy because I didn't know the Navy had men in country Vietnam, never knew the "Brownwater Navy" existed until my orders came in August, 1968. Bummer! All in all, it was a pretty good tour, I returned with all my limbs and just a bit of a drinking problem, which corrected itself when I returned home and had more to do than work 15 hour days. Hope to hear from more men who served on the YRBM-16 just to see where we all ended up. My machine shop expertise has evolved into "Design Engineer" work, I still have all my hair, but it's gray . . . the result of raising 2 daughters, which might have been tougher than my tour in Vietnam. Now, my wife and I spend our time cruising the Mississippi aboard an old 1978 Carver cruiser we refurbished. Guess I've come full-circle and can honestly say I am thoroughly enjoying life, still no grandkids, but hoping to experience that, too, someday. Oh, and by the way, did you manage to kill that rat with the 2 concussion grenades you threw or did he get away? Kent Smith "Smitty"

Would like to display a picture taken of myself and an unknown VNN sailor. The picture was taken the day Adm. Elmo Zumwalt visited on an inspection tour at An Thoi. His photographer took the picture while we were loading ammo on one of the Swift boats. The picture appeared in the August 1993 issue of Vietnam Magazine on page 6. I can't remember the date but it had to be prior to May 1970, when the Admiral was no longer COMNAVFORV. How can I display the picture? Thanks. Tom Morris SK3 NSA DET An Thoi
