Record 2196 Hello,
I am looking for anyone who may have known my father, Clifford Dawson. He was mainly on destroyers ans was a Boiler Tech and am looking for information about his history in Vietnam. He never discussed it at home, and my mother is desperately seeking information regarding his time in Vietnam.
My father passed away in January, 2002, and in filing claims for his widow (my mother) we have learned that his time in Vietnam is very vital information.
Any information that someone may have is greatly appreciated.
Thank you with the most honeor and respect.

Record 2192 I was the AOIC / OIC of the Sea Wolf det for most of the 7 1/2 months I spent in the area. Previously I spent a couple cruises flying rescue north of the DMZ in the'60s and this tour was my reward. (No good deed ever goes unpunished). Actually, like most people, I have love / hate feelings about my time in the Ca Mau Peninsula, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. It was good to see the names of so many people that were so close for what seemd an eternity, and then just slipped away. I really appreciate what you're doing to keep the good memories alive.
I retired in '82 because of a back injury, and am now recovering from my second surgery to repair the damage.
So I'm here in my recliner for 2 1/2 more months with nothing to do but surf the net for Vietnam groups.
Any body out there remember when the LDNNs barracked themselves in their hooch, and Tom Richards had to go in and 'talk them down'. As it happened the Deputy COMNAVFORV, Admiral Mathews was holed up in the Wolf Den the whole time and few people even knew he was there.
Oh yes, some of you may remember the 'Great Ice Cream Caper'; I was the Fire Team Leader who liberated the Ice from one of the T's and back it back to SA.

Record 2178 Many good memories (irony?) of night maintenance runs to the Coastal Surveillance Center (CSC) lighthouse, trips to Long Binh etc, parties on Backbeach & our offbase motel (barracks), and riding shotgun (M16) on WPBs & Junks out of Coastal Group 33 at Cat Lo. Managed to return fire on numerous Junk-trips, never once getting hit and all the while enjoying the coolness of the murky waters. The Skipper eventually shut down my river rides after a few firefights; said an ET1 should have more sense than volunteer for interdiction duty on Vietnamese Junk boats. Anyone remember code name Operation Rock Crusher? How about Market Time or Game Warden? Would love to hear from the 1970 Navy CSC, Black Pony or Intel groups. However, if you're looking for a companion to wail on The Wall, with ponytail & medals, look elsewhere, veteran. Loved my 20 years in the Navy, but I don't do causes and I don't live in the past.... Enjoy your life. Chief Bud

Record 2174 I appreciate seeing the pictures of Binh Thuy. I stood watch on the gate and watch towers in the photos. I was a Damage Controlman 3. We repaired the PBRs, stood security watch, manned the guns during general quarters. Anybody that remembers me . . . sorry about the last eight weeks when I was walking wounded . . . lost a fight with a group of VietNamese which left me drifty and with the mother of all concussions. I left "country" and left the Navy, the concussion took nearly ten years to clear up. My memories of Binh Thuy: Losing a helicopter with a SEAL team aboard. Losing two sailors in the river. My personal belief that some of the civilian employees that served as interpreters with us on the gates were double agents. Being very confused about who were supposed to be our friends. Taking fire from the woods . . . being at general quarters with flack jacket, helmet, loaded M-16 while South VietNamese walked in from the woods with valid South Viet Nam ID cards. I saw an anaconda snake that must have been 50' long in a pond by the helicopter pads. We threw concussion grenades in the water to prevent sappers from bombing us. I remember beer with formaldehyde. I remember the beard growing contest that we had. I remember standing watch on the roof of the Annapolis Hilton in Saigon and watching Chinooks bringing in dozens of twisted Huey gunships for repair or disposal. The lieutenant's driver had to leave Binh Thuy after the South Vietnamese sailors rigged a fragmentation grenade to his bed springs, which was discovered by the guy in the lower bunk. I remember picking up a GI on the road between Can Tho and Binh Thuy who had apparently been poisoned by the locals. I saw some beautiful sunrises. I served with some great guys, but back in the world, we were construction workers, lumberjacks, and Mafia, and the Navy picked us to go to Binh Thuy because we were a little rough around the edges.

We filled a zillion sand bags, built a club out of old pallets, and received the whole advance base kits in connex boxes. We stood duty every single night, drank warn Hamms Beer and fussed with an old generator that occasionally worked. We met the first Swift boats, built the ammo bunkers and cleared the road. Good duty but like everybody else, I was glad to go home. I remained in the Navy and retired as MACM after 26 years. I went to work at a VA hospital after that and I have since retired from there as well. Well, enough about me, and old shipmates out there from the original Det?

Record NA Hi Kent. I am not a Vet but I hope that doesn't make me a bad person. I thought this page might be of interest to you and other Brown Water Navy veterans. I did use some information from yours and other Vet site to flesh out the description of some of the Zippos, and for that I am grateful. My purpose is to educate people about Zippos and am not buying or selling anything on my website. If you see anything inaccurate on the page would appreciate you pointing it out if you want. Whether or not you want to provide a link to me is up to you, but if you don't want to, maybe you could suggest a site where it could be found by fellow Vets. You sure don't need a link from me. Your site is awsome both in layout and content and comes up 1st in almost every search. Great job!! Many thanks, Ed

Record 2137 I was a corpsman on the Tutuila. Learned more the year I was in Viet-Nam than any other place or time while in the Navy. Wouldn't want to do it again. But, was proud to do it then. We did what was called Medcaps on Wednesdays. We would go on the beach and give medical treatment to the Vietnamese civilians. Also, remember when the v.c. tried to blow the Tutuila up. The skipper ordered men to throw concussion grenades overboard all night long so no swimmers could get to us. Sure enough, the next morning, they found two v.c. swimmers dead on the beach. I was a scared young fellow at the time. But, I also remember the out country r&r in Japan. Kinda took our minds off things for awhile.

I would really like to find out who they were so I could go back to Vietnam and put a monument on the mountain with their names. I'm stumped on how to find out who they were.

Record 2109 I served on MSM-15 almost the entire year of 1969. I was the boat's Gunnersmate (GMG-3). Made some damn good friends over there, but through the years I haven't kept up with many.
I recall many long and hot days and nights on those boats. Countless patrols and some exciting fire fights. Thank the Lord for providing those sampans that used to come up to the boats to sell us black market beer, booze and ice.
Long Live the "Brown Water Navy"!!!

Record 2108 I was an Instructor at NIOTC from July 1966 to Sept 1969. I served on Chief Wells Team as a PBR Instructor. I helped set up the school at Mare Island and in the Suisun Slough Area. I have a lot of stories about the school. I did not go in country - but returned to the Submarine community after my shore duty tour. I retired from the Navy as Chief of the Boat (An E-9) of the USS Bluefish SSN-675 in 1981. I have many memories of the boats and am proud to have been a part of that community. They served us well!!

Manned 50 cal. machine guns on both occasions but didn't know what I was doing. I remember when the US went into Cambodia and all of the dead bodies that floated down the river past us afterward. Had a Gunners mate named Pappy and an OIC named FRY, both good people.
