Record 2095 I spent my tour as a Marine, 3rd Marine Division, running rivers and convoys. I was assigned to the 3rd at Dong Ha. I would come up from Da Nang on any craft that would haul our non-priority gear/supplies (soda, smokes, writing paper, etc.) Our little group rode shotgun on mike 6's, 8's, YFU, anything. Because of the non-priority load, sometimes at Cua Viet, we were off-loaded and stayed a few days until the priority gear went first. We lived on the boats with the Navy and were proud of it.
I can see by some of the entries that the men on the boats in 1967 and 1968, Tet, remember the stress. I have nothing but respect for you guys. I was there during the same period of time and also spent time on the Perfume River going to Hue and then by truck convoy to Phu Bi and back to Da Nang by C-130 to start the next trip.
I want to inform the webmaster of this page that I have super 8 films of Cua Viet being hit, Da Nang harbor, Dong Ha and a trip down the river , I am also in the film. The films have been transfered to DVD, approx. 20 minutes in lenght, 10 minutes at Cua Viet, we lost about 7 boats that day. In the film the 65 boat is pulling out to safety and an LST is fighting the fires. Some of the remaining boats are in flames and tanks are rolling. In the background of the action you see the old white sign with the name, "Cua Viet" writen on it.
Note: This film is not for sale. If the webmaster would like a FREE copy, I would be happy to send it to him, so that he could put it on this webpage. I want to give back to the men on those boats.
I requested for disability in Jan., 2003. I was in a number of hospitals in Vietnam and medevaced out of country to a hospital for a few weeks before coming back to the Cua Viet River. The VA Board informed me that Being assisgned to the PX (I never sold anything or worked inside of the PX) and riding the rivers didn't constitute me being in a combat zone, so I am appealing.
This web page maybe used as a positive tool to assist many veterans that served on the rivers. I thank you for letting me serve with you.
PS. I could use all of the information that I can get on the Cua Viet and Perfume Rivers during 1967 and 1968. I would appreciate anyones input who recalls moving/transporting PX gear and the Marine escorts.

Record 2082 2 boat patrol call signs were "Shark 81", and " Shark 82".
Some of my crew mates were: Dennis Leaver, Bill Schlutz, and Ron Hall. We always envied the fastest boat, so every boat crew in the Section, worked hard to improve their boat's performance. We used to race each other back off patrol. I remember one time, we had the fastest boat, after a lot of tinkering. Another crew had to borrow our boat for a night patrol, because theirs was down for repairs. When they returned in the morning, we were waiting on the pier, to take back possession of our " fastest " boat, and get it ready and re-fueled for a day patrol. The tide was runnnig fast toward the pier, and the crew who had borrowed our boat, didn't start backing the engines down soon enough. Well, you KNOW what happened next. They hit the pier, and our boat was severely damaged. Steel piers and fiberglass don't like each other. We were not happy campers.
On another note, thank God, I came home, went to college under the GI Bill, got married, and had kids, who in turn, gave us grandchildren. I often think of those I trained and served with, who paid the supreme price, and never had the chance to live a full life. God bless them, and may we never forget their sacrifice

Record 2076 I joined the Navy in June of 1965 and went to boot camp at Great Lakes. After boot camp, I was stationed on the USS Alamo LSD 33 out of San Diego, but soon departed to the shores of Vietnam with a group of Marines. Landed most of them at Chu Lai. I then volunteered for shore duty in Viet nam. Left Viet nam to go back to the state for survial school at corona, Ca. Was picked up my helicopter to fly out of Danang and almost immediately came under fire from the VC with me hanging out a helicopter with my dress whites. What a sight. Damn near got killed by the VC and the maries in Chulai for having on a white Navy Uniform. It took me 14 days to get from Viet nam to Coronado. After survial school I then went back to Danang. I served on the YW 128 which supplied most the LCU, Swift boats, floating barracks with fresh water that was heavy with Agent Orange. I was also on a Yard tug and several other craft, but spent most of with time on the YW128 at Monkey Mountain. I was the only African AMerican on the YW. There were plenty of Deadly sea snakes to contend with and pot shots from the VC.Love to hear from someone that was on the YW128 in 66-67

Record 2075 I arrived in Vietnam March of 1970, they assigned me to MACV-Delta Assistant Team 60(Advisory team) SADEC. Started off as administrative, pissed off the administrative captain and he put me in the field with a Captain Clarence R. Lancey (Special Force), to teach me a lesson. I picnic'd with the 3rd bn, 15th regiment, 9th ARVN Infantry Division and remember you crazy guys on the docks and the rivers, you guys even gave us a lift to a hot LZ with one of those WWII crafts where the ramp was stuck and we had to climb over the sides under fire, just wasn't our day. The mess hall was right next to the river, of course it was just a little island with two small bridges connecting to the mainlands, real good hot meals but our 30 day missions kept us from the spoiled life. Your concussion grenades every ten to fiften minutes couldn't keep me from sleeping but I appreciated it, it kept the underwater sappers from visiting. You know that SADEC was the R and R location of the Viet Cong and kept us pretty busy. Do you remember the bar, there were three bars in the same small building, the EM, NCO, and the Officers and the movies were out in the court yard against a white painted 10"X12" plywood board. The Advisors were mostly berets, and I remember they showed the movie "The Green Berets", starring John Wayne, boy, what a joke, they started throwing beer cans and anything else they could find at the board, some of you guys were there, I remember. There was a guy named "Mitch", an E-6, who would always be there when I came back from the field, his missions were 30 day missions too, we always shared our pictures of our families, drank, told stories, go out to the dock and throw concussion grenades into the Delta, drink some more, shoot the rats, drink some more, one time two of you crazy PBR guys had a contest of who can eat the most cockroaches at the bar, one would chew them and swallow, the other would just swallow, well I guess they tried to crawl back up and sure enough, they all came out with beer and whiskey, nice try, Mitch sent them both back to the boat and we went back to drinking and telling stories. Left Nam in March 1971, didn't tell anyone how short I was, just left, asking God to take care of all of you guys, you were a credit to my sanity, thanks.

Record 2041 I was forward gunner on Petersons,s boat. BM1 Yakey was
patrol leader. The other crew members were Hubbard (snipe)
and Moon, after gunner. I also was on Dotson,s boat
with Gurney. Gurney cut my beret ribbon on my 5th patrol. What ever happened on patrol with LCMD Shepard
when he took the Times Life photojornalist up river on MEDCAP. I ran off Peterson,s boat, per orders of Yakey, to get Sea Wolfs up. The Sea Wolfs were on the incorrect channel and didn't here the fire fight. The boat Shepard was on and his cover boat were under heavy fire. When I cleared the wall of the friendly camp I tried to jump over a pool of water and fell into a trap. I was drowning and all I could feel was the air on my fingers. I had my piece in my grip and all of a sudden I was being lifted out of the trap by the seawolf gunners. The gunners loaded me on to their seawolf and I blurted out the proper op frequency and started to vomit. The next day I had a high temperature and was waiting for YN1 Morrison to take me to the hospital and I walked off base. I was told later that I had fallen into a ditch unconsious and I was taken to an Army Hospital located in the Bien Thuy area. I was in a comma and finally came out of it several weeks later. I do remember that I had lost almost half my body weight. My unit was transfered to the USS Garriet County while I was in the hospital. I was told the door gunners of the Seawolf, who saved my life that day, were quartered forward on this LST. I went over to their quarters and fell down the lader and caught my arm on a S-hook holding the lader. I was literally meat on a hook. The door gunners again assisted me by taking me to Doc. To make a long story short I would be medivaced back to the States for more surgery and physical therapy.
I would deeply appreciate anyone knowing what happened on the day of the fire fight to contact me. I would love to here from any members of PBR Section 512.

Record 2033 Great Web site!! I really enjoyed the pictures and reading some of the comments and stories. I arrived in country New Years Day 1968 and spent the first five months with the 9th Infantry Division assigned to HHB 1/11th Arty (Dong Tam). After TET I went to Di An Advisor School and became an advisor. I spent two tours with the Macv Advisors. One in Sadec (Jun - Dec 68)assigned to the 834 Regional Force with 1Lt Steven Lazar, 2Lt Jim Castagno, SSG Jack Lewis, and Sgt John Gill and one up in Qui Nhon (Jan - Dec 70)assigned to Advisor Team 42 (MAT II-2). Our District Hq was at Tuy Phuoc but I spent the year on an outpost at Go Boi. Hardly ever had more than one or two on the team up north. We saw our share of action at Sadec and Qui Nhon and at both locations we were transported (at times) by the LST's to or from an operation. In Sadec we were extracted a couple of times from some hot action by PBR's. Not a whole lot of room but they saved our butts. Never had a chance to properly thank you guys for the rides, extractions, and the offshore naval gun support so I'll say "Thanks" to all of you now. I have a lot of stories to tell but some still have bad memories for me. I do have some pictures of the PBR's stationed at Sadec if they'll help anyone out there. I dont't remember any names of the guys stationed there, sorry. To all of you that survived your tours I say welcome home. To those that didn't, I Salute and Honor you as true American Heroes.

Record 2017 I've been visiting this site for awhile now and it is getting more and more messed up by all these idiots that have to spam this MILITARY site with gay porn, diet pills, gambling and all other kinds of crap. Nobody who visits this site wants to have to look at all this junk. I have really enjoyed visiting this site and have gotten some cool research done through this site but now it's all spam and crap. And who is this Mugu guy that keeps leaving posts that make no sense, if you have something positive to say, say it, if not, stay off. This is a MILITARY related site. There are plenty of other places to leave your lame ass spam and messages.

Record 2016 A childhood friend of mine, Jerry W. Kirkendoll, Army WO1-117th AHC at Long Binh, was kia 3/15/71, when he left from Plantation about 07:30 to take passengers to Hotel-3 at Nha Be. Upon return takeoff, 68-15411's transmission failed and crashed into a ditch there. All on board were kia. If anyone knew Jerry or has a photo of him, it would mean a lot to me to hear from you. God bless all of you for all you did over there. Even though the sentiment seemed unfavorable at the time, there were many of us who didn't get on that bandwagon, and we silently prayed for your safe return home. YOU are the best of the best.

Record 2014 I was the leading ET on YRBM-20 from mid May '69 to late April or early May '70. I was assigned to YRBM-20 from the main ET shop at NSA Nha Be. I reported to CWO Johnson, a warrant engineer (MM?). I had four other guys working for me, two whose names I remember are ET3 Tom Swackhammer (Ohio), and ET3 Ed? Rankin (Bakersfield). Memory fails regarding the names of the others. I remember an RM (Radioman) from Jett, Oklahoma; I also remember that the ENs "blueprinted" a 6V53 for a PBR, they did it so well, they had to do another so the boat would be evenly powered.
I joined the 20 when it was on the Mekong, left it in '70 while it was anchored downriver of the YRBM-16 at Chau Duc.
I retired as a CWO3 Elec Tech in Sept '95 after having advanced to EWCS (E-8) in '85 and CWO2 in '89.
Great site! Many memories awakened. Fair winds and following seas to all my fellow shippies of YRBM-20.

Record 2005 Was Coxwain of LCM-876 for three months in Danang Harbor. Later transferred to YFU-70. Spent rest of time on coastal ops. to Dong-ha, Hue, Tan mi,etc. Monsoon time was real nasty in South China Sea. It's a wonder those old boats survived! Pretty hard to navigate with no visibility and junk equipment. Was a real thriller riding the surf into the Cau-Viet or Perfume River on 30' waves. Even more so trying to get out!! Boat hit a mine in Perfume River. crew repaired hole, pumped out water and made it back to Danang on one engine. Talk about slow boat to China! Good crew on boat. They worked hard and played hard when able!

Record 2004 My uncle Oscar Cloninger, Jr. (a.k.a. Junior) enlisted in the Navy in July of 1963. He was initially stationed in Jacksonville, Florida, on a NAS-Crash Boat. From 1964 to 1965 he was assigned to the USS Escape ARS-6 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and afterwards in Viet Nam.
From March 1966 to March 1967, Oscar Cloninger, Jr. was a Naval Petty Officer in the Navy's River Patrol Force known as the Brown Water Black Berets. He was assigned to Task Force 116-Operation Game Warden River Division 511. He was primarily stationed at Cat Lo in the Rung Sat Special Zone of the Saigon River on a PBR (Patrol Boat River). His responsibilities as s shipfitter were to make sure his boat was ready for patrol or battle, as well as damage control.
The River Patrol Force (Task Force 116) was established on 18 December 1965. From then until March 1966, the Navy procured river patrol boats (PBR) in the United States, prepared the crews at the Coronado, California, and Mare Island, California, training centers, and deployed the units to Southeast Asia for Operation Game Warden. On 15 March 1966 the River Patrol Force was also designated River Patrol Squadron 5 for administrative and supply purposes. Junior was among those first deployed in the River Patrol Force. Cat Lo was one of the seven original land bases, which was gradually migrated to Nha Be, Game Warden Headquarters in Saigon. Prior to being stationed in Vietnam, Junior trained with the Navy Seals in California to prepare him for this mission.
The 'unofficial' meaning of PBR was "PROUD-BRAVE-RELIABLE" and they were all of those things and more. As my youngest son says, "Uncle Junior was the shiz!" Uncle Junior's crewmates' unofficial definition for PBR was "Pabst Blue Ribbon" boys! They referred to themselves as "River Rats." He told me he learned to water ski in Viet Nam behind a PBR!
He would very much like to hear from any of his shipmates. You can reach him via me at DarLank99[ at ]aol.com.
