Record 2000 I am a retired bmcm. I was involved in every over the beach landing made in Vietnam, Also operated on the Perfume,Makong, Basack.and cuaviet Rivers with Rivine forces

<EMAIL = bmcmjpullin[ at ]vero-online.net> UNITs SHIPs BOATs = APA-218 APA-227 LST-1148 YEARs in VIETNAM = 1963- 1969 FROM WHERE = Rensselaer, IN REFFERED By = NA
Record 1999 Our first trip into Cua Viet was also a real learning experience. We hit the beach, put the engines at full ahead, and because of the heavy incoming artillery barrage left the boat and ran for the bunkers. These were hastily constructed of metal conex shipping containers surrounded with sandbags. I hunkered down against the back wall and watched the fireworks, feeling safe from the shrapnel that was flying around outside. A Navy corpsman (combat medic) was near the entrance smoking a cigarette, watching for causalities outside.
“I wouldn’t sit there if I were you.”
“We haven’t sandbagged that wall yet.”
I moved to the front wall.
As soon as the last forklift load left our boat we ran back aboard and pulled off the beach. If the boat had taken a direct hit the entire beach would have been wiped out - our cargo was 200 tons of high explosives. There were several shrapnel scars on the superstructure, and large jagged pieces of metal lying around the deck. We waited in mid stream for the remainder of the boats, and fought our way back to the ocean.
The areas around the rivers were declared “free fire” zones; if we were shot at, we returned fire. If something looked like it might shoot, we fired. If something looked like something could be hiding behind it that might shoot, we fired. It took us a few trips (and many causalities) to learn this. The Navy lost a couple of boats because the crews were too nice; they only fired at targets they could see.
A small figure sits on the bank of the river fishing. (In the middle of a firefight?) Nearby a boat lines up on a mark. The “fishing” boy touches the ends of his “fishing lines” together. A five hundred pound command detonated bomb explodes under the boat, blowing a hole the size of a truck in the bottom, killing or injuring the entire crew.
It was a very small beach - just large enough for two of our boats at a time to squeeze in. The actual area for cargo operations was about 100 feet wide and maybe 100 yards deep. It was well within range of North Vietnamese 130 mm howitzers setting North of the DMZ. The Soviet made 130 howitzer is a very effective and accurate piece of artillery. I’m very glad and fortunate that they had no artillery spotters in close to correct their fire.

Record 1995 As a unit of the Naval Special Warfare Group, our Beach Jumper Team 13 of 6-8 personnel moved about often on various specops assignments. We reported to COMNAVFORV but made home base where ever we landed. I had the privilege of working with the Brown Water Navy on many occassions in different locations in IV Corps, from Parrot's Beak, to Mekong River, on Vinh Te canal, to Rach Gia and Ha Tien. Really enjoyed the open and friendly hospitatily where ever we went and the tough professionalism of the sailors that went with the ride-into-harm's-way. Am enjoying the many photos of places and craft that bring back some special memories. Will visit again.

Record 1989 I am looking for an old friend who was initially atationed with me at Little Creek Virginia on the Tugs . His name was supposedly Johnny rex Starks He informed me that his real name was James Starks that he was under age and that he used a relatives birth certificate ,possibly a brothers , to enlist. I kept the secret to my eternal regret. He ended up on a swift boat tender in the delta . I last heard he had been injured during an attack that was summer 1971. All I want to know is if he made it home alive . I still have my regrets but now after all this time I can live with it. This has at times haunted me . If he is alive I will be happy. If not when life ends I hope to see him again and WILL yell and nag . He said he was from ST. Louis Mo , might have been a lie , I don't know .

Record 1953 I ran the outboard motor repair shop from April of 1970 to April of 1971 in Cam Rahn Bay. Any skimmers that had serious motor troubles from I Core, II Core, and III Core ended up in my shop. We (there was one Vietnamese counterpart and myself) had a terrible time getting parts. Everyone thought outboard motors were just toys and nonessential equipment until the TET Offensive of 1970 when several bases were all but overrun by sappers. The biggest weakness in harbor defense was due to lack of skimmer operations to protect the bases. Most of their engines were in my shop, or had been stripped for parts to fix other engines. The brass came looking for someone they could hang. Fortunately, I kept good records of the engines and parts I had ordered. They asked for my records and I would not let do anything but make copies in my presence. I heard there were some folks in supply who had a lot to answer for when they found all of my part orders in a cardboard box stuck on top of a parts rack out of sight. They had changed my priority 1 requests (combat equipment) to priority 4 (recreational equipment).
I did get to work on one special project with the local Underwater Demolition Team (UDT). We built a special skimmer on which we mounted two 115 horse Johnson outboard motors. They wanted a rig that would get them to a ship reporting a swimmer in the water in a hurry. That boat would fly....literary! It went air born one night after we got an emergency call from a ship. We were running flat out when a wind gust caused us to go air born and loose almost all of our diving equipment, guns, ammo, and percussion grenades. Fortunately, they were able to find all of the crew, especially me. I was in the stern of the boat where I could work on the outboard motors if necessary. I was catapulted out of the back of the boat and knocked out when I hit the waster. I regain consciousness when they start dragging me on board. We continued on to check the ship with what little equipment we had left. The guys did not find the explosives on that trip, but decided to go back for a second look after they dropped me off and retrieved more diving gear. The found half of a truck tire inner tube filled with about 100 pounds of C4 explosive rigged wit a timer, battery, and detonators. Those guys saved a lot of lives that night, including mine. Thanks!

Record 1949 I made two tours to Vietnam 1967 and 1968. I worked in CIC operation division as an SN & RD3. The Boston helped in Naval Gun Fire Support in North and South Vietnam. In April, 1967 the Boston was anchored in DaNang harbor for a short stay. We received hostile fire from the shore lines and returned fire back with the mighty eights and five inch guns. The Boston along with the HMS 39 Hobert received direct hits from the vietcon enemy shorelines near the DMZ. Sprays of water was all around the Boston, but not one sailor got killed. The Boston shot more than 38,000 rounds to help the marines out out hostial fire. All Vietcon small boats moving South from the North was sunk by Naval Ships. We were on duty twelve on and twelve off. General Quarters keep us on our toes to support or comrades. I'm proud I served and would do it again. There's more to tell but not enough room to publish here. I have Vietnam cruise book pictures from the 67 and 68 cruise. Because of Agent-Orange I have several illness but not service-connected yet. All Veterans who served at or in Vietnam needs to let your Congressman know that we need to be compensated for our illness. Vietnam Veterans, let's All stand up for what is Right for our government to reconize in waters off the coast of South Vietnam is in-country. May God bless America and, our comrades who are protecting us today. Freedom is paid for a High price. Shall we ever Forget? I should say Not. POW's and MIA's are Not Forgotten. A Texan.

THE PCF's WERE FINALLY TURNED OVER TO THE VN's IN ABOUT APRIL OF 1971.AT THIS TIME THE VN's WERE JOINED WITH US AND WE TRAINED THEM TO TAKE OVER. Record 1913 White River (LSMR-536) Vs. Swift Boat
In 1968, it was a typically hot, clear morning and my ship, the White River, was on its routine cruising mission steaming down the Vietnam coast in our normal operating area. I was just getting near the end of my OOD watch when we cruised by a beach area with a huge mass of sampans and people in black pajamas.
I notified the CO of the sampans and people and was at the same time relieved by the next Officer of the Deck. CO Jordan came up to the bridge shortly after the watch change and ordered us to return to where I had spotted the mass of Vietnamese sampans. During this return trip, a matter of 10 or 15 minutes, we checked with our land based operational command and verified that these people and boats were in a designated "free fire zone" (one of McNamara's brilliant ideas, we later learned) and consequently, considered to be unfriendly. CO Jordan called GQ and I returned to my GQ OOD position to take the ship into a firing position. (Someday, I will be able to fully understand the feeling I had then knowing we could be setting up to kill what appeared to be hundreds of people right in front of us. Suffice it to say, to this day, it is a disturbing feeling to recall.)
We took a position about 200 yards from the mass of people and sampans and followed our usual procedure of bracketing the target. We bracketed with rockets what we thought were VC in a "free fire zone" and after the long shot that went up on the beach and short shot that landed between us the floating mass, the next one would have been right in the middle of a group of sampans and people in black pjs.
Well, as you can imagine, with each bracketing rocket more and more of the mass of people and boats began to disburse and gradually, there, in all its glory, was a genuine US Swift Boat. Our bridge radios were going nuts and I heard our call sign "Jiltfoxtrot, Jiltfoxtrot, this is (swift boat call sign) interrogative your intentions" I rushed out on to the bridge wing and pointed Jordan's attention to the rapidly thinning mass of people and sampans. I think he saw the emerging swifty about the same time as I did and called a cease fire and also ended our GQ! The following PCF swift boat looks a lot like the craft we saw after all Vietnamese jumped off. Imagine this boat covered bow to stern in black panted Vietnamese and the water around the boat fully covered by sampans and you may have an idea about what we saw and didn't see:
(insert a picture of a swift boat here)
Well, as you can imagine, CO Jordan was livid and got on the communications net and asked the operational command just what the heck was going on! There was quite a lively exchange of dialog. White River was cleared of any error and it became a matter for the operational command and swift boat people to resolve. Our ship was in the right and the swifty had apparently failed to keep his operational command up to date on his position. Fortunately, I don't think we actually killed any friendlies that day with our bracketing shots.
I never heard if there were any repercussions to that day's rocket firing; but, Jordan (an Annapolis grad made full captain while his predecessor Carlson went on to admiral. Carlson always fired with an air or ground spotter). That, free fire zone firing was without either of the spotters since they didn't seem to be necessary when the sampans and people were in the water practically within spitting distance.
Interesting tale, ah what?
ANY SWIFT BOAT VETS REMEMBER THIS INCIDENT????

Record 1909 I am researching the PBR Mk II to build a model of it, and
I'm hoping that somebody with first-hand experience might be
kind enough to clear up a minor mystery for me.
The mystery surrounds the mounting for the aft 50-cal gun on
the Mk II. I am basing my model on a Tamiya kit that mounts
the gun on a steel tripod mounting, on the hull centerline
in the aft well. However, photos I have seen of the Mk II
show the gun mounted on (what looks to be)a shorter pintle
mount atop a large box-like casing that projects into the well from the transom.
Could somebody please tell me whether the tripod mounting as depicted in the kit is correct, or whether I need to do some scratch-building? Also, what was the casing for?
I would greatly appreciate any assistance...please contact

Record 1902 Just breezin' through looking for names I recognize from the dark ages. Saw a sign yesterday pointing the way to the "Moving Wall". I went the other way but have been thinking about Nam since. So I thought I'd check out some memories and this site came up. Really cool. So, hi to any one who was there and here's to never having to do it again. After watching what happened in Iraq I think we finally figured out how to get it done! I wish we could have had the backing that our troops today have. Great job!

Record 1901 I logged my story a few years back. I was in comms support out (of NAS Saigon) for the staff and made a few patrols to get more of the "flavor" of the river. Just wanted to pass along my new email, to all. Have heard from a number of former shipmates, thanks to this site. Hope all is going well for all you 'ol river rats.
