I got to Viet Nam on Salvage Duty,1967, with Harbor Clearance Unit 1 Cleared an inverted Barge, sucked it up against our keel and took it away, Phillipines I think. Came back worked on a Shell Tanker a sapper hit below the water line right close upon the beach, Then went over to Cam Rahn Bay and salvaged an 8- boat that was broached. Later came back to Camp Tien Sha, S C R F Wire and Sail Loft, at Carpenter Shop. left in July or August, 69 We made chokers and straps for LCU's YFU's etc. We would trade you out of your false teeth if you would let us. We had a hell of a network all over I-corp. Made gun covers too, and any thing else you could make out of canvas, leather or Naughahyde. I worked with BM 1 Ellis, Sn. Yock spent nearly every day putting boats on and off the quay wall, scraping and painting and all other types of patchwork. I like the site.

Was with ComRivFlot One staff, embarked in USS Benewah and USS Colleton, from 3/68 to 3/69. Dong Tam was our "home base," and our liberty port. Remember two shipmates at RivFlot One Det Dong Tam, CWO2 Hershel Barton and YNC Holmes. Acted as Judge at chief's initiation in Dong Tam and initiated then PNC Bob Hebert, our PsyOps chief. Ran into him a few years later in the States. He was then a PNCM. One of my significant memories of the Mobile Riverine Force was the morning the USS Westchester County was mined. I went over to Westchester County to see if I could assist with any casualty reporting, and learned all the clerical staff were included in the 23 casualties. I had an eerie feeling, sitting at the leading yeoman's desk, looking at a photograph of his wife and kids while I filled out his casualty report. Don't remember many of the Vietnamese nationals at Dong Tam, except for Van (Baby San) who worked in the Chief's Club, Rhee who worked in the Officer's club, and one mysterious Vietnamese female called "VC Jan," who was alleged to be pacing off the various buildings on the base so Charlie could zero in his mortars at night. I volunteered for that tour in Vietnam to see what tpe of a man I was. I've stated that while I may have personally been frightened on occasions, those chief's devices on my collar took over and all my training and disciplined jumped to the fore. I went back to Vietnam in 1971 at the request of RADM Salzer, who was going back to be COMNAVFORV and wanted me on his staff. Saignon was much different than being in the Delta. The time spent in the Mobile Riverine Force were special days and nights, spent with special people, both Army and Navy. I hold my head high and am very proud of my service and the contributions of all the men who also served. BRAVO ZULU! Would love to hear from any shipmates who may remember me, or who just want to say "hello."

WOW! Does this bring back some memories! I was a QM2 on LCU 1485 in 1967-68. I clearly remember April 30, 1968 when we were ambushed by NVA regulars on the Cua Viet up in I Corps. We were in convoy wiht LCU 1477 which took the first B-40's. They took out most of the crew. Our boat received multiple hits but only minor injuries. As a result, our craftmaster and I believe one other sailor on the 1477 both received Silver Stars. Looking back, though, the "fun" times outweighed the bad. Our boat made McHales Navy look tame! How we ever survided, I'll never know. Wouldn't want to do it again, but sure don't regret it.

As helmsman(RD3) of PCF-38 I was part of the first 3 swifts to transit (Bernique's Creek) Vinh Te canal to the Bassac. Then down river to Rocket Alley which we transited to Rach Gia. Then Rach Gia via canal(with horse shoe in it)north to Ha Tien and back to salt water. All the fireworks was at the first big bend east of Ha Tien. The officers were all called to Saigon to tell our version of the 100's of innocent Cambodians and children (8 VC Kia's) we did in. Not a shot was fired by us the rest of the three days(except for a few large birds that flushed at the wrong time). Remember watching the bullets splashing toward us in the water as we went down the Bassac and weren't allow to fire back(friendly village)was unforgetable. Everywhere from HaTien south was a free fire zone(except a couple of green beret outposts) so that(Bassac) was disturbing to us.The three days was very nerve-wracking but actually far less damaging to us as were other places/days/patrols. Got wounded off Nam Can in March 69 and eventually got lost in the navy hospital paperwork and ended up on a destroyer out of Mayport,FL. Many other hairy raids fit in between the first trip east to the Bassac and my last raid near Nam Can in March 69. You've got a great site here. THANK YOU.

Just found your site. Served in the Nam from Jan, 69 -Jan 70. Was assigned to PFC 13, and the latter part of my tour I was MAA at DaNang Camp Ten Sha Annex. Ran alot of mission on th Cua Di Rive south of DaNang. Our orignal boat crew had a reunion about four years ago . Lt. Morton Hodgens III, RD2 Charles Russell, BM3 Barry Whitesel, and myself GMG2 Tommy Francis. We had not talk to each other since we left the Nam in Jan of 1970. I found these men through the SBA and contacted them on Thanksgiving. I would recomend everyone to try to find their Boat mates it was very healing. Hope to hear from some of the Swiftee's that was there during our tour 1969-70. Great Site, Tommy

I have reason to believe that he may have been WIA on December 15, 1969. Does anyone remember EM2c Miller and/or know of any actions that occurred on that date ?? our boat was anchored in the mouth of the cua-tiet river entering the delta. It being to late to continue to our home port after delivering much needed supplies to the base camp at dong-tam. Darkness was quickly approching so we anchored . Fotunately a PBR. approched -boarded and informed us that the V.C. probably would try to cross at the very same place we would be at that point in the river. Needless to say we were under way in a matter of moments. No sooner than we were under way the flashes started, coming from both sides of the shore. The men on those boats--{2} rose to the occasion their guns blazing charged into the valley of death. It is unknown to us if they all got out of there in one piece-we all prayed that they did. My thanks go's out to the men of the Brown Water Navy for not only saving us that night, but also for sending me home in one piece------------THANK-YOUand I Love you my Brothers. heavy boat co.-john Pufpaff

Had a few "scarry" times going through the Horse Shoe. Sam Smallage EMC(sp)was the boat officer. Last of the 2 fisted beer drinkers. Looking forward to hearing from people that may remember me from that time.

Became the plane captain for the station Skytrain, a C-117d, one of the finest R4D's ever built. Call Sign: Navy-124. We hauled the mail and extra parts and personnel in Support of Operation Market Time and Game Warden, throughout Vietnam and beyond. We supported Det TSN, aka Aircofat, and re-fueled there often, hoping to get a ham sammitch before Mammasan sold out, or that thievin' monkey, Sam got to it! We flew along with three other 117's, #'s 17270, 50780, 50801, and ours, 17124, built in 1938. The Danang Detachment had one also but I cannot remember the number, having never crewed on that one. That bunch kept to themselves, but we joined up one night in Cavite City, RP and partied like there was no tomorrow at Mammas Place. It's sad that the Navy pulled out of there in 1972. The Aircofat Legend was true, We got done what needed doing through determination, skill, guts, and individual commitment to the group effort. We kept those old planes and H-34's flying no matter what. Have a warm PBR, or a Carling's Black Label at 86 degrees, sometime and just reflect on what we accomplished. Nice Site!

I was a radio teletype operator, in support of team 60 which was attached to the 9th ARVN ID. I was there when the CB's constructed the PBR base and it became operational. What I remember about the "brown water navy" is that as soon as the swabbies came to town, the prices at the local "recreation center" doubled :)

I was just killing some time and decided to look up on the net Chou Doc, where I was stationed. I ran across your site. I almost fell of my seat when I ran across your photo of "Camp Arne". That was where I spent all of my time in Vietnam. God, did the memories flood back. When I arrived their, right after the infamous Tet offensive, I was Army Signal Corps attached to a US Special Forces B Team (later replaced by a MACV unit). I was a crypto guy. My job was to transmit (and in-code) all of the intellegance reports being collected and shoot them on th Coa Lanh (sp?). At that time, we had Army Intell., Air Force Intell, and even the CIA (it took me three months to figure out that Air America was something other than a civilian airlines). BTW: I never heard the place referred to as "Camp Arne". That air conditioner you referred to was acquired while I was there, our supply sergant took a bunch of "war souviners" up to Siagon and came back a week later with that thing. It was originally installed to the commo room to keep the equipment cool (had to knock a hole in the wall). In the photo, I can make out the antenna on the left. I had the fun job of climbing up the damn thing to check the coaxil connections when we were having commo problems. I didn't know which was worse my fear of heights or fear of being a sitting duck. Your ship was not there during my stay. Only Navy was a hospital next door (they threw some great parties).
