Record 1289 What a great site. Can't tell you how excited I was when I found this page. I served on SeaFloat as one of the trained Navy Snipers along with Jim Santoro, Jimmie Huggins, and Paul Harrison. We were trained by the 25TH Infantry (the Electric Strawberry) in Cu Chi and then returned to SeaFloat. Santoro was on his way out (finished his tour) but Harrison, Huggins and I went on some great OPS. I could tell you some great stories of my "days on the barge." Please allow me at this time to say a sincere and heartfelt THANKS to the numerous people I had the pleasure of working and fighting with on SeaFloat.

there until 11/70. Was awaken at night to hop onto a helo with 3 other sailors with a TAD for Can An. Here is my dilemia I'm unable to find anything about this location. The base was positioned on a corner major river running in front with a small canal to the side leading into a forest and I understand it to be the U-Minh. There was a small village nearby on the river. We were unable to send or receive any mail from Nov.until Feb.(X-mas cookies in Feb). Across the river about an 1-1/2 hr pbr ride was a very small PBR base with a seal team. When I arrived after being overrun there were 7 of us. Within a week a marine capt. took over. Within a few weeks personnel topped a between 15-20 on the base.It sounds crazy but if this sounds familair to anyone please let me know.

My nick name was Tuby. I made a WestPac tour aboard the USS Rodgers. Floating near the coast there were times that I would see some of the river boats doing some maneuvers from the distance. I always wondered if the crew on that boat had gone to NIOTC training during the time that I was a weapon instructor. Wish the best to all you sailors.

We shared a small base with the Navy PBR's when the water was high enough for the boats. We had an ARVN base next door with a Captain DOC who liked to shoot over our base with a 50 cal at night.
My Army unit had eight guys: all of us made it home alive!
We scanned the "Seven Sisters" mountains which crosed into Viet Nam from Cambodia. Had several targets every night with VN artillery or the Sea Wolves attacking.
We got attacked several times: onre battle lasted three days with the Special Forces Mike Force gettting chewwed up pretty good.
A big THANKS to the Navy guys for their assistance, support and food.

Record 1232 Just interested in the log-ins referring to the Mark Hopkins, APL 46. Have been trying to find out some history on it since I left it in 1948. It originally, as I understand it, was towed from Seattle to the Philippines during WW2. then later to Yokosuka, Japan. It was sent up to Tokyo, being pushed by a barge outfitted with two gigantic outboard engines. It docked at a warehouse location at the down-river side of the "Avenue W" bridge over the Sumida River near the downtown section of town. It was used as a home base for the guys (I was in communications) who were connected to COMNAVFE who had offices in the Tokyo Bank Building downtown. We had a very nice motorpool alongside, and easy access to the streets where a few blocks of walking (or riding in a rickshaw put you on the Ginza, the main street of downtown. Late in 1948 I left to go down to Yokosuka, then back to the States. COMNAVFE was moved down to Yokosuka later and the Mark Hopkins sailed into obscurity (I assume it was moved back down to Yokosuka). I have lots of memories of that ship. Lots of beer parties on the top deck. I have some pictures and a cut and lines from the Stars and Stripes about her arrival in the Tokyo area. I would appreciate it very much if anyone who can give updates on her travels through the years (I assume she found a temporary home in Vietnam). You can E-mail me at cranfoo[ at ]hotmail.com. Record 1229 We ran patrol stopping sam pans and small motorized boats.
PBR - Ripper 3
We were doing searches for small arms and ammo. Several times we found small arms etc. When we found these, we sank the boat and peppered the crew.
This was harsh but they did it our guys when they got the chance. One morning around 10 am or 11 am we came on a strange looking barge in the river, it was just sitting there, I don't recall if it was anchored.
We went in to check it out. Only three that we could see was on board. We came along side and was just getting ready to board when maybe 10 came screeming out of the hole and tried to board us. Three, maybe four actually got on board.
We had a fire fight that you would not believe. It must have lasted 5 minutes. Our Captain 1st class Johnson (Buddy) was hit but survived. All six of us took hits.
We were able to back away from the barge and our guy on the twin 50s was able to spray the barge but good. We were dead in the water and our engine was smoking. Two sister boats heard the fire fight or heard our call for help.
Thank you guys for saving our ass. Two of our guys didn't make it. I later found out that I was hit in the right leg
below the knee which broke my leg and a long slash down my left arm just below the shoulder to the elbow.
The last that I remember the barge was on fire and we got out of there asap.
Since my discharge from the Navy I haven't heard from any of my Buddies. If any of you guys remember this, contact me.

Record 1228 I went to Nam as a boot RDSN. I didn't even know where the place was, but peer pressure in A school made me volunteer. Turns out it was the beginning of a 30 year career that took me through two wars, a coup attempt, and a million great liberty ports.
Fortunately, through the years, I have somehow repressed all the bad memories of Vietnam, and now I just remember the good times. For example, I remember standing on the fantail of a Swiftboat just about dark one evening, tied up alongside YRBM 20, shooting the shit with 3 or 4 other boat guys. All of a sudden a grenade landed on deck in the middle of all of us. We scattered like cockroaches in the light, and it exploded right over the fuel tank. Ripped a nice hole in the deck, but thankfully no one was hurt. It was blamed on the watch, for not making it all the way to the water with his toss, but myself and one other guy know the truth. We laughed about that until our sides hurt later that night.
I remember fishing with grenades and cooking steak almost every day. And I remember those great times on liberty, either in Vung Tau, Cat Lo, SaDec (my favorite place) or in Chau Doc. (Did the MP's really chase me out of that cathouse?)
Looking back on my time in Nam, it's an experience I wouldn't have traded for anything. I turned 21 over there, and can honestly say that I grew up during that year. I'm proud of what we did over there - I just wish we would have had the leadership to win.
Okay, that's enough for now. If anyone wants, check out my website for some pictures of Swiftboat life. Any of you shipmates (boatmates?), feel free to drop me a line.

Record 1227 Congratualtions on this great site. It provides a great service. I have been researching information on my wife's uncle, GMG3 Tom Copp, who was KIA on Feb. 13, 1970 while on MSR-3 or MSR-4 as part of Mine Division 113. Tom was operating out of Ha Tien in late 1969 and early 1970. I am trying to reach crewmates or others who knew him to be able to learn more about his experience in Vietnam and share it with Tom's family. I've sent some photos of Tom to Kent Hawley, so hopefully they can be posted on this site. I have also corresponded with Woody Arnell and Rulon Young, both of whom served in Mine Division 113 at the same time as Tom. Woody was on MSR-6 when it (along with Tom's boat)came under attack on Feb. 13, 1970 and Tom was killed just a few weeks before the end of his third and final tour. Rulon was on MSR-7 when it was sunk some two weeks earlier, on Jan. 30, 1970 (there is a photo of the sunken MSR-7 on this website). Tom's boat was the cover boat for the MSR-7 that day, and as I understand it, he and his crew picked up Rulon and the rest of the MSR-7 crew (some off the MSR-7, some on the beach) under heavy fire as the MSR-7 burned and sank. Tom's memorial service (and that of David Hoffman, KIA 02/26/70) was held on March 11, 1970 at Ha Tien, with Rev. L.L. Westling presiding. Lt. Robert Aurin was the commanding officer at Ha Tien. Anyway, Tom's family has been happy to learn more about his service in Vietnam, and we would appreciate very much hearing from anyone his crewmates or others who remember him. Thanks.

Record 1204 As an advisor to the RVN our primary duty station was at the Hai Dang (the light house on the seaward hill overlooking the city of Vung Tau and the South China Sea). Our group was responsible for maintaining coastal surveillance from just north of Vung Tau south along the Delta and around the southern tip of VN to Cambodia. We essentially controlled the various sea borne units (PCFs, WPBs, and the Coast Guard vessels) that patrolled the coastline. We also had some command and control responsibilities for several Seal Teams in the Bassac River area as well as a Black Pony squadron out of the Army Airbase at Vung Tau. We were housed in a converted villa/hotel near the entrance of the Air Base. Had much contact with Cat Lo units as well as our headquarters in Cam Rahn Bay. Time has made memories and names of comrades fuzzy but will always remember the restaurant Cyranos along the beach in downtown VT as being one of the best I have ever been in - and that is saying alot! Would enjoy hearing from colleagues stationed there.

Record 1201 I am interested in contacting shipmates from the Hickman and Clark Co. It is important for me to know of other medical problems caused by service on these ships in Vietnam. I have multiple mylenoma and Type II diabetes, and my doctors believe it was exposure to toxic chemicals in Vietnam. Would be very interested to speak with others from either of these ships.
