Record 1194 This is good. I have wanted to tell my story for nearly 40 years. As most of you know, when first returned home, no one would listen. I''ve lost jobs because my supervisor (Keiger) thought all Vietnam returnee were crazy.
I served for one year in Vinh Long during the TET offensive. Yea, it was a scary time, but I had fun there. I met some good buddies. I got in touch with one, Bill Dausel. We still talk. He's my best buddy now. I love him like a brother. I am still trying to get in contact with Alonzo Brooks who was from NY and was a gunner in Vietnam. If anybody knows him, give him my email and let me know where he is. Alonzo was with me the night i returned home from Vietman. He had my back all the way. When I left, I never had a chance to see or talk with him again. I had another good friend in basic training, a white boy called Johnson. I think Al Johnson. We talked one since we came home but I lost contact with him. I would like to see him too. I love my Vietnam buddies all of you. At time it seems like you are the one person I can relate to.

Record 1170 MST 2, Det CHARLIE, was at SEA FLOAT/SOLID ANCHOR from May through November 1970. We had one HSSC, one MSSC, and two LSSC to support 3 SEAL platoons. We were there for the transition from a totally waterborne base to a shore base.
One of my rememberances was when the USS Krishna (ARL-38) got mined (the hole was big enough to drive our LSSC through).
I remember when USS Canon (PG-90) got ambushed (twice); the second time taking eight B-40s and 14 of 24 casualties. I remember when VNN LSSL-225 was mined and sunk.
I remember when a batch of RAG boats was mined; at least one ATC sunk (maybe two) another ASPB afire and beached.
I remember we had to drink distilled battery water because one of the VNN supply LSMs pumped diesel fuel into the 10,000 gallons of fresh water! I remember being surrounded by water, but none of it was potable.
And I remember the gunfight a VC Lake between the NVA 95th Regiment and the SEALORDS, SEAWOLVES (HAL-3), Army COBRA gunships, and BLACK PONIES (VAL-4) on 15 September 1970. Now, THAT was a fight!
SEA FLOAT/SOLID ANCHOR was an op area like no other -- always dangerous for the wary or unwary.

Record 1145 I had been on the USS Alamo LSD-33,up around DaNang, when I got orders for Mine Div 113, went states side for the training and ended up learning how to drive a river boat, not bad for a Gunners Mate 3rd. Flew into Saigon like everybody else, and hopped a ride to Nha Be, We worked on our ORE stuff for awhile, watched a big ship sink off the pier from a mine of some sort. Then we pulled up stakes and moved up/down river to the Mekong. USS Askari, then a couple of YRBMs, lots of time checking out sampans and setting out in the middle of the river playing cards and taking pictures. Then we went up/down river to Ha Tien, where we patrol the river (I forgot the name) that comes out of Cambodia. That is where I got my Purple Heart and Bronze Star, catching shrapnel in the leg and helping out the crew that were worse off than I was. By the way it was on Friday the 13th. We were there for sometime 3 or 4 months then back to the Mekong in May one our way to Nha Be, where we were doing the Vietnamization of our boats to the ARVN's. All in all not to bad, however it is growing dimmer and dimmer on the small details. We did work with the little speed boats with the remote control and chain bottom drag, which I remember. Funny I cant remember my own boat capt. though. I do remember an EN from Xenia, Oh but not his name There was Hemphill, I think from Ca, a Wilcox that got pretty shot up and had to go stateside, I had a friend on the boat that got sunk, I think if was MSR #7, In fact he lives here in the same town I do, Rulon Young is his name. I will try and get some pictures out for all to see if there is anymore interest. Great site for all us River Rats. Have a good one.

Record 1128 You guys have done some great work putting this material up on the web. It's great to see the Brown Water - Gator Navy getting some good reviews out on the Web. I'll have to email in some of my photos from I-Corps. We crewed Mike boats and various YFUs. Last one I was on was the YFU-79 which has an intersting history. Navy transferred the Skilacks over to the Army's 329th Heavy Boat Co in the Spring of 70. For about two months they ran mixed Navy-Army crews with an Army warrant as the craftmaster....that was intersting. When the Army eventually pulled the boats out of 'Nam in the early 70s, the YFU-79 and some others got dropped off in Guam. In the 80s, Navy got the YFU-79 back and put a flight deck on it for training allied helo crews in flight ops off of decks that were underway. The boat was redesignated as the IX-514 and continued operating until late 90s out of Pensacola. A very colorful history for a river boat ! Keep up your excellent work ! 1st rate !

Record 1121 I spent about 5 months on Solid Anchor (Nam Can) as a radio operator in the Ops center. We were working 12 on and 12 off (port & Starbord) and filling sandbags in our spare time. I was on watch when SeaWolf 21 was hit with ground fire. I remember Christmas eve, the sky full of flairs.... anyway, It's been a long time and I've forgotten most of the names of the men I was there with. Great site. Thanks.......... Ford

Record 1113 This is a great sit and I'm glad and proud to see it here, Thank You! I remember the nights that we took incoming every night. You could just about set your watch to the sounds. When I went to Vietnam I was to be an an Electrican Mate but they needed to have welders so I became a Ship Fitter. I didn't care, I just wanted to stay busy that way my mind wasn't on the fear we all had over there. I was only an E-3 when I left Dong Tam. I never had the desirer to stay in the Navy but my brother made up for both of us. He was a lifer with 40 years in the Navy retired as a Commander and I was proud of him. I was there during the change of comand in 1969 in Dong Tam it was just before Thanks Giving, this might make someone remember me. I have blocked this part of my life out for the past 32 years. I just thank God every day that we know there're military men out there to keep us safe and our children safe. Thank you!

Record 1112 I served on LCU 1614 June "69" thru May "70". I was sleeping in my rack in the transit barricks. It was my third day in-country.I was awakened by a lot yelling. Outside it was like daylight but the sun wasent up yet. Charlie had hit the main ammo dump in DaNang. The feeling started then and it grew. The feeling that I was never going home. The 1614 had to be re-outfitted,it had just returned from Subic Bay. They told me it was at a ramp where an LST offloading ammo was hit and the explosion blew the con and mast off. I stayed on the 1614 we turned it over to the Vietnamese. That was hard. I saw how they treated the other boats we gave them. I'm home now. I have a boy 14. I tell him how bad war is, but I know he can see the pride I feel, especialy when I talk about my day in the brownwater navy.

Record 1111 Paul Smith, this is WO (now CW4) Sorges. I read your comments on this web page and would be interested in having you contact me. I do not really recall you from Vietnam as being my crew chief, but then, being over 50, I am lucky to remember anything at all. I had many crew chiefs on my aircraft 561 during the year the Army gave me a paid vacation in south east Asia.
I am in contact with one of my crew chiefs. HIs name is Paul Fish. He has an interesting history since Vietnam.
In case you are not aware D troop 3/5 has an annual reunion in Atlanta. It is hosted by Bill King (1970) who was War Wagon 16 (now Reunion 6).

Record 1109 Hey guys, great website. Looking for anyone that drove those large silver colored boats with tires on em that go on land and in water. They're the LARC V's. I drove one of those rigs around for the better part of a year and a half. I was one of them jockeys that hauled beer and other essentials from ship to shore and on inland as needed (or ordered to). Anyway, if there are anymore of you LARC jockeys out there, drop me a line. Maybe, if there is enough of us, we can all get together sometime. See Ya.
