I was on the YRBM-21 from April to July 1970, Supply Division. I was an SH3. I was transferred down there after 8 months on LCM boats out of NSA Danang in I Corps. I made third class in January 1970, and I guess they transferred me to the 21 because they had no billet for an SH in a boatswain's mate outfit. I remember in the Supply Office an SH1 named George Hughes, my boss, and Ensign Gwinn. Our captain, Mr. Fry, was an outstanding officer.

His name is Gerge Soileau. He was aboard the Monitor boat 112.My heart goes out to every one that came back and the ones that did not.

Engines finally went out in oct. 67 and was sent back to Da Nang. Took 2 weeks R&R in-country on the LCM-8 on the river at An Wan (i think thats the way it's spelled). Caught Dengue Fever there and sent to hospital in Da Nang. Because of that they wouldn't let me extend and was shipped out in middle NOv. 67. Lost all my photos from Nam except for about a dozen. Got to this site trying to find info on a SEAL team we worked with in the summer of 1968 on Nui Coto mountain in the Seven Mountains region of the Mekong delta. B-40's airboat detachment was co-located with us at Moc Hoa and we had numerous interactions with the brownwater Navy forces in our area. While on Coto (a place called Chau Kim knoll) I actually "worked" the 5" guns of the USS Blue just off shore in the Gulf of Siam. That was a trip!!! Later in Hong Kong they were in the harbour and I got a chance to visit the ship. That was even more of a "trip" for them and me. Still trying to find out that info. If Gary R. Smith, author of "Death in the Delta" reads this, he might be able to shed some (retrospective) light on the events of that operation, particularly from the SEAL point-of-view. Great Web Site. Your work and effort is greatly appreciated. Good fortune & God speed.

I came aboard Krishna after it came out of dry dock in Saigon. My experences on Krishna were formative to say the least. I grew up! I remenber working long hours on the barges patching up tangos and PBRs. I also remenber how the VN treated the boats after they were turned over, and how we spent countless hours replacing engines after they sold the oil and ran them back outto us dry. I would love to hear from shipmates who remenmber me during my time on Krishna.

I was with ARG Bravo surgical team in 69-70. I June 70 I was assigned to the base sickbay at Cat Lo. (HM2) In October 70 I went aboard the YRBM 17 at Dong Tam (HM1). After the boat was turned over to the VNs in Dec 70, we were towed upriver to Chau Doc (I think - it could have been Tan Chau) where we were anchored in the river about 200 yards from the YRBM-20. I am interested in hearing from anyone who was at Cat Lo June-Oct 70, on the YRBM-17 Oct 70-Apr 71 (or later to see what ultimately happened to the 17), or on the YRBM-20 who remembers when the 17 was downriver from the 20, especially anyone involved with the "boat race" and related activities in about March 70.. The names I remember from the 17 were Himes, Godwin, Crawford, Nix & Benoit (all but Benoit were on the advisory team).

I went to Vietnam on the river boats Sept. 12 1966. From there on out out I operated with the best group of people who will go to my grave with me. I arrived in DaNang in October of 1967 as a Radioman. There were about 25 of us just out of Radio A school and we were told that we were being assigned to a Comm Center. When we arrived to Camp Tien Shau(spelling?)we were informed that there was no room at the comm center and that we were to be farmed out to other areas. Given a choice of duty I chose the river. I am glad I did because even with Tet of 68 and all of the other things that went on for that year I am proud of the friends that I made and will always hold that time of my life as a great experience. I was on YFU 55 orginally but It went to Subic Bay about 3 months into my tour and I changed to YFU 66. Probably lucky because 55 got sunk on the Purfume River after its return to duty. What a site....a zillion stories and experiences. I worked in Hq MACV's Combat Ops Center as a graphic artist supporting the order of battle briefings to Westy and the ambassador. First boss was a fine Naval aviator, Commander Murphy.....he had a huge "FTA" sign on his desk..... our overall boss was USMC Brig Gen Jimmie Jones, a kick-ass guy. MACV then was in an old villa on Pasteur Street, next to the Italian Embassy. I lived in the Walling Hotel across from the train station. A most interesting navy character there then was Captain Archie Kuntze, (sp?) hdsupac commander for Saigon. Prior to this tour, I spent 18 mos on Santa Rosa Island, CA, being transported back and forth by Port Hueneme's fearless WW2 Elco and Higgins PT boats...later served with Chief Photo Mate Phil Kopp, in Okinawa, who photographed the evacuation of Saigon to the bitter end.....and a guy who taught me about the Navy. My thoughts are with all you posters.

HI all brown water sailors, I was a doorgunner with HA(L)-3 Navy Seawolves, stationed at Vung Tau and Nha Be from 3/68-3/69. You guys have a great website here. All the great pictures bring back a lot of memories. We flew air cover for the PBRs, etc a lot. I was in on a rescue of 2 wounded off a PBR where our pilot hovered our ship on the bow of the boat and took off the two wounded sailors. I am told they both survived. Welcome home!!! I was on the USS Terrell County for a couple weeks back in about May of '69. We went down to Old Nam Canh and took a look at what was left of the town. There was nobody living there then, but there were lots of bomb craters. We walked point for some Navy Captain and we understood they were gonna put some kind of barge arrangement there. The next year when UDT-13 came back again, I guess it was in place. I never saw it. We had one operation there before I got to Det Golf of UDT-13 where three U.S. Navy guys got shot. One was the Chief Corpsman of UDT-13, Doc Worthington, and the other two were crew on the PCF-43 that was blown to hell by ammo and HE that was aboard. The boat had run up on the bank after the skipper got killed when an RPG-7 went into the wheelhouse. The story is on my web page somewhere. LTJG Pete Upton, or GM3 Randy Piper wrote it. Good job on the page. Steve Waterman (not a Frog, but a Photog)

Hi guys! Welcome home to all of you. Have to periodically add something here as this site has gotten soooo big. It would take a week to read it all!! So many great stories and memories. My first 24 hours in-country were the worst/craziest. On arrival to the Annapolis hotel(?)my deepest concern was saying all the crap they taught us in boot camp properly at the quarter deck. As I entered there was blood everywhere and chaos. Found out that nine GI's were killed there earlier by a sapper with a bomb while they were waiting for the bus to take them to the airport and home. Kind of put me into focus as to where I really was. Later that night I was assigned to be a loader in a machine gun nest on top of the building. (I was an ET so you can imagine my thoughts) They told us not to load any weapons until told to do so. After about 30 minutes of watching flares and hearing the thumps of artillery and/or mortars way off in the distance I thought this was going to be cake. About then my thoughts were immediatley interupted by the sound off machine gun fire right next to us. we took cover hearts pounding and the thought that my fisrt day was going to be my last..when we found out that the guys in the machine gun nest just down from us decided that they were going to take no chances and load theirs. Well...apparently someone did something wrong and they sprayed the hell out of the buiding across the street. That was my first day..it was all ok after that except for the shipwreck in Hong Kong where we went agound in Tphoon Rose (Aug.71) and totalled her (Regulus AF-57) Decommissioned her right on the rocks. I am rambling...hope to hear from any of my shipmates. Hope all of you are well...happy, healthy and at peace...bye Tom
