Very nice site. I was at the other end, in 1970. We worked out of DaNang, on YFU's, LCM 8's and if we had to, LCM6's. I spent a lot of time on the DMZ, hauling supplies and personel up river to Dong Ha. You had things floating at you in the water, the Cua Viet river was lined with CORN fields. Never saw a rice paddie the whole time I was there. You can get sick to your stomach watching corn stocks. Can't find too much about the north, and the river boats, but we weren't PBR's, just supply boats. My pictures were taken from me by the MP's at the gate of the Airfield at DaNang when I was leaving country. I also had a landyard with eight pins and one spoon. Those were from a rocket attack in Hue. I drop the concussion grenade, my craftmaster scooped it up and we had a hell of an air burst. Those M.P.'s must have some real tales to tell their kids, and have the pictures to prove it...
Glad to see that the Navy got dirty, instead of leaving it all up to the Marines to fight the war...

AFTER TRAING AT PENDLETON AND 2WKS LEAVE I WAS SENT TO THE LAN OF THE SANDPANS. WAS IN DANANG AT CAMP TENSHAW FOR ABOUT A WEEK THEN SENT TO CAU-VIET ON THE DONG HA OR CAU-VIET RIVER, WHICH EVER YOU PREFER TO CALL IT. I WAS THE COXSIN ON LCM-38,"STING RAY 2" WAS MY CALL SIGN. I'M GLAD I WENT, BUT WISH I HADN'T OF, YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I MEAN. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT DON'T KNOW WHERE CAU-VIET IS, IT IS OR USED TO BE, ABOUT 3 MILES SOUTH OF THE DMZ. I SURF THE NET QUITE A BIT ABOUT NAM,AND FIND A LOT OF PICTURES OF THE MARINES OR ARMY IN THE HILLS, A LOT ON THE DELTA, BUT NONE ON THE DMZ,WHY IS THIS? THE LCM I WAS ON WAS ALSO USED FOR MINE SWEEPS, BUT WE NEVER HAD THE SHELDING THAT YOU SEE THAT WAS USED IN THE DELTA, JUST THE BOAT AND ONE 50CAL. PLUS OUR REGULAR SIDE ARMS. THER WERE 2 OTHER MEN BESIDES MYSELF, A GUNNER WE CALLED RED AND AN ENGINEMAN WE CALLED SLIM. IF ANY ONE KNOWS OF THEM I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM THEM OR ANY OF YOU " RIVER RATS". got to go for now hope to here from you all "THANKS"

I found your site from the Swift Boat Home Page. I served on PCF-16 and 69 from August 1968 to August 1969.
Though I served in I Corp, I enjoyed your site. We lived on APL-5 while in Da Nang and then moved to a
barracks in approx. October of 1968. There was no air conditioning in the barracks.
My PCF-69 patrolled the Cua Dai river from March 1969 until our crew was broken up in approx. July, 1969.
At first, only the VNN junks from Coastal Group 14 patrolled the Cua Dai followed by the Swifts.
Eventually the Monitors arrived followed by the PBRs. The PBRs were probably the best boat for this
river because of their shallow draft. Our Swifts could easily match the fire power and speed of the PBR... but
not their shallow draft and turning ability. They were wonderful boats.... as were my Swifts.

Guest Record 641 Thanks, Bubba. I can finally look at where all the stuff happened without going blitzo, if you know what I mean. I visited the Vietnam Memorial Wall in DC last Summer for the first time. It helped to get rid of some hostilities I have carried for many years. Guest Record 680 First of all thanks for doing all this work and setting this up for everyone. I have blocked out most of Vietnam. I was stationed in Danang for 3 months at the Naval Support Communications Center. I was then transferred to PBR Mobile Base One. Took me several days to find it. I bummed rides and whatever. Stayed at a SeaBees camp one night on the way there. Don't have a clue where that was. I was a Radioman 3rd class. PBR Mobile Base One was called "Curveball" and we were located in a cove. I remember one Sunday we had about 67
helicopters land on beach, sanddunes, and on our helo pad that held one to join us in our great meal. They mostly be 101st airborne and knew where to get a great meal. There was a fire on beach where some Army guys got burned up and our guys put out fire and got bodies out but too late. Believe this happened October 1970. We turned over everything to the South Vietamese and our barges, PBR's, and Mike 8 Boat were towed seaside. We went down the coast and our destination was Danang Harbour. This was about a month before I came home in April 1971. Like any information available from all Vietnam Vets - Army, Navy, Marines, etc. that were there during 1970-1971. I be from Charleston, WV and thankful for any help.

I was with Riv.Sec 543 March to Sept. in Nha Be, was with 535 in Can Tho Sept. to March '68. Scott Delph (PBR 750) was my boat captain. Marc Cline and Tom Craghead were my best buds. Guest Record 690 Just thought I would try to reach out to a few Navy guys from back there. I really had it made my first tour, clubs and messes, working on slot machines in Danang, traveling all over I corps. I tore up my knee one night durring a mortor attack on the base. I ended up in 106th army hospital, yokohama japan. I felt bad about bieng there with all the others on the limb ward. anyway, I voluntered for a second tour when I recovered. yrbm-17 dong-tam was my next duty station. worked on river boats, water pumps, ramp gaskets for mike boats. Was the original eager-beaver firefighter on the navy base. Helped set up thousands of cambidoian refugees in dong tam at the old 9th div army base. If David Casman, Kieth tyler, Nick Nagel, frenchy, bear,or anybody else want to talk. E-mail me. I have some old photos of yrbm-17 crew

Guest Record 710 Hello fellow Gator Navy types and coast line sailors. I was on 3 LSTs and the USS WHITE
RIVER from 1964 to 1968, seeing action in Vietnam on each one. My memory is that we
were just doing the jobs assigned to us and didn't think anything about being heroes or
doing anything special. -- Looking back, we were actually heroes.
We did our duties, didn't think about doing anything else and deserve the kudos of the
AMERICAN PUBLIC. I know that the WHITE RIVER
received the SecNavUnitCommendation (2nd highest award in the Navy) an no telling what
else and I suppose each ship I was on received something.
I know that the USS WEXFORD COUNTY (LST 1168) was hit in Sept. 65 but fortunately the
shell didn't explode. We laughed it off at the time but looking back, I realize that the entire
crew is lucky to be alive. The TOM GREEN COUNTY and the WASHOE COUNTY were also
work horses and exceptionaly active and heroic, **Its really hard to believe that I could have
seen so much action in 4 years. Even rode helicopters off the White River going to get
the mail. Had to fly over hundreds of miles of jungles and even drop down in them to
let troops off going to and coming back from Chu Lai. A great experience but wouldn't
want to do it again. Me and my mail bag saw lot of action each time we pulled into port. Rode on swift boats,
tanks, jeeps, tanks that went into the ocean, everything. WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM anybody onboard those ships (White River from around Mar 67 to July 68) (Wexord County around Dec. 64 to Mar
65) (Tom Green County arund Mar 66 to July 66) ( Washoe County around July 66 to Mar
67) The dates and people are obviously fuzzy at this point, especialy as I drank Vietnamese
beer twice during those years and got completely wiped out. -- - - I spent several weeks
at Monkey Mountain in Danang getting transferred from one ship ot another, was on shore
patrol with a billy club and had to escort the drunk bus around the area while it was being
attacked (I've never seen anything so incredibly dumb), and spent the last day there waiting
for a swift boat to go down the entire coast of Vietnam to get to my new ship on operation
I waited at the Vietnamese naval base, drinking Vietnamese beer, don't remember much about
the ride down the coast except that we ran aground in enemy territory, etc. --- Anyway, it was
a four year blast and I even found time to bring home a Philipphino wife. Salutes to all!!
REMEMBER, we did the right thing. The USA let us down by fighting a limited war and
not going after the enemy in North Vietnam. Thats why we won WW11 and WW1, we went after
the enemy on their home ground (eventually). In addition, the protestors were protesting about the
wrong thing ..... They should have been saying, Get in there, fight, get it over with and come home,
not get out at any cost. REMEMBER, we can never fight another limited action. ITS WIN
OR ELSE. DON'T FIGHT A HOLDING WAR!!!!! I believe that we did learn that lesson.
WHAT EVER YOU DO..... Promote this slogan. No more limited wars. Go after the ENEMY.
Regards. Wesley

Guest Record 724 YR-71 was at SCRF Annex, Camp Tien Shau, DaNang. We repaired and recovered PBR's (RIVDIV 543) and Swift Boats.
With our LCM-8 that was made into a floating mobile drydock.
After the turn over of the Swifts, the PBRs as well as the Coast Guard Cutters. We were sent south first to Cat LO then Vung Tau (rough duty) then up river to Bhien Thuy.
Set up shop mid-river outside NAVSUPACT Bhien Thuy until we
we moved up river to Tan Chau. We were at Tan Chau for a few months then we had company...If I remember correctly it was APL-23. Then it came time to DEROS...being a snipe meant sea duty....so I ETS and joined the Army.
Spent 23 years in the military and without a doubt my tours in the Brown Water Navy is what I consider the high light of my career... not only because of the location by the people that I had the pleasure of serving with...
God Bless!

I guess us Army "boatie" (Aussie friends term) took over after most of the US Navy and Marine Corps returned home. You Navy guys should take your place of "Honor" for your duty in I Corps during the more dangerous and critical phases of that War. "Brown Water" was not exclusively the Mekong Delta.

Record 814 I was assigned to PBR Mobile Base One when it was still on the drawing board. At the time, no one could tell me anything about the base. After SERE training, I found it in Long Beach, CA. At that time it was just four barges being built and outfitted. It was ready to deploy in September of 1967. We loaded it aboard two LSD's; the Comstock and Whetstone and set sail for Saigon. Rough water made the crossing to Pearl a nine day ordeal. Before Pearl we got orders to Danang. I don't do rough seas very well (Being from the mid-west, I never learned about sea sickness until I joined the Navy.) At Pearl, I talked my skipper into letting me fly on ahead to Danang and set everything up for the base's arrival. We were towed up to Tan My at the mouth of the Perfume River from Danang in calm seas and anchored with four 6,000lb Danforth anchors. The PBR's showed up a few days later and started their patrols. Things were very quiet in that area of Vietnam until TET. Even then, the base itself never saw any action. To my knowledge, everyone got home safe and sound.

Record 819 Arrived 28 June 1969. Departed 29 June 1970. Served whole time on YFU64 as an Engineman. Remember Don Clark who has visited this site. Also, Nick Toto(NY), John "Aardvark" Nowak(NY), Howard Van Erem(WI), Thomas Jefferson Pate, some Army Warrant named Ferriby (?), and a lot of faces without names. I have a few pictures around the house somewhere. I also remember an EM3 named Ken Seith(NY) who after a trip to Subic Bay prompted us to paint "Almost Cherry" on the con until command in Danang had us remove it. It was a long year and a lot of work. I also remember the chief snipe on YFU61 was a good friend of mine named Karl "Red" Anderson. Last I knew he lived in FL but was originally from upstate NY. We went thru 9 craftmasters in the time I was there. Only one injured and evac'd. Would love to hear from any others who ever did time on YFU64.

Record 897 Never forget going south few days before Thanksgiving 1969 to unnamed beach to moved an Army Const Unit. After removeing a tank and an APC went back for third load. There were 5 to 15 foot waves that day from a typhoon moving in. As we went in a wave broached our Mike 8. A dozer operator with the Army Const Unit had been pushing us off the sand bar till we could back under up our own power. Needless to say this time another wave came in as he pushed us off. The blade of the dozer cut a hole below the water line unknown to us . As we backed off we lost power two one engine, side with the hole. The mike 8 set prowerless around 40 yards off the beach on the sand bar. Had to tie it off to a dozer wench line.
We set there on the beach till after Christmas waiting out the storm with the Cont Unit and an Army guard.A choppter flew in every day with mail for some, long rats and always a couple bottles of booze. Our secured beach (200x200 yds ? maybe) was next to some unknowen river.at the base of a mountian of DaNang at and old village site around 2-3 days by Mike 8
They finally got a Navy sea tug to pull our boat off and we headed back to DaNang. That first meal on the tug, steak and fries I can still taste. As we got Monkey Mountian in view, the tow line on the LCM broke. It ended up sinking in sight of the docks at Monkey Mountian. Anyone who remembers this Christmas of 1969 in Nam? Email me.

Record 915 In the spring of 1970 we moved some boats [swifts] from seafloat to the mekong in support of an operation to cease arms movement out of Cambodia. Our boats were used for insetion of army [Green Berets I think] for making a sweep of an island that layed both in Camboadia and Nam and then stood off to give needed fire support. While holding off about 1/4 mi. reported to boat officer that small arms fire was coming from one of two houches [huts] on shore. This info was relayed to those in charge and was given orders to lay in 50cal fire on targets. Walked in 50cal onto houch #1 and it went up in ball of flames. One NVA tried to ecape to other houche and took him out. Ground ops captured number of arms in 2nd houche. I don't remember the name of this op, but we had support of Seawolf and Cobra gunships.
Before or after this op we were policing river traffic coming out of Cambodia and the largest and highest Noahs arc like barge came down river. we determined to leave it alone and let it be searched by an other group

Record 1050 I was stationed in Da Nang from Jan 68 to Mar 69. I served on the LCU 1475 until May or June 68, I don't when exactly' we're 30 years ago. For those of you who don't know, LCU's are WWII landing craft. How do I know? The 20mm ammo was stamped 1944. After I got off the boat I went into the Literege Division, admin office for boats.
A friend found on MSN a picture of my old boat. With a name, Bob Cross. Bob, if you are out there my e-mail is berman4754[ at ]aol.com or anyone else that served on the 1475.

Record 1054 I arrived in DaNang in October of 1967 as a Radioman. There were about 25 of us just out of Radio A school and we were told that we were being assigned to a Comm Center. When we arrived to Camp Tien Shau(spelling?)we were informed that there was no room at the comm center and that we were to be farmed out to other areas. Given a choice of duty I chose the river. I am glad I did because even with Tet of 68 and all of the other things that went on for that year I am proud of the friends that I made and will always hold that time of my life as a great experience. I was on YFU 55 orginally but It went to Subic Bay about 3 months into my tour and I changed to YFU 66. Probably lucky because 55 got sunk on the Purfume River after its return to duty.
Thanks for the opportunity to sign the Book.
