I made my First Wes-Pac in Jan. 67 aboard the USS Princeton LPH5. Lost alot of our marines on that cruise, God bless them. Got orders and went to PBR Mobile Base One in about May of 68. Served with a great bunch of officers and enlisted men.Went up to Cua Viet to work on boats once and the rest of the time either on base or patrol.Mostly did fiberglass repair on the PBRs.Made another WES - Pac on the USS CREE ATF 84 chasing a Russian trawler up and down the coast of Nam.Hope any MB1 sailors or 521 sailors that see this have joined the MB1 site.

Outstanding website! Five of us at a remote site (rocket and bombing range in Kitty Hawk, NC) volunteered for Operation Game Warden in 1965. However, they had no one to fill our billets at Duck Target and all our orders were changed to various other locations. So, I ended up on the flight deck of the Yorktown instead. You guys did a great job on the delta!

I was a quartermaster on YFU-18, YFU-55, and LCU-1614. Made many trips to Hue, Dong Ha, Chu Lai, and a few to Sa Huynh. We also got involved in pulling the Third Marines out of Quang Tri back in November and December of 69. The last month of two of my tour was spent on LCU-1475, getting it fixed up to turn over to the RVN Navy. The RVN's needed a boat in much better condition than we Americans required. I have lots of photos, but have to dig them out.

We were the first group from Minron 11 to go to Nha Be. I was 19 yrs. old and the first trip down the Long Tau was pretty scary, but before long we even went water skiing out there. Watched the Eastern Mariner sink at Nha Be after being exploded by the V.C. Our boat, MSB 16, was one of the first on scene at the Baton Rouge Victory after it was mined and beached.Heintz(not sure of spelling) and Underwood paid with their lives; close friend Rod Rickley paid with his life after I was stateside. Spent 2 yrs. on the Epping Forest 67-68, made a few trips down to Vietnam. Because of the lack of rated boatswains mates they let me run an MSL for a while as a seaman. Epping Forest went through a typhoon on the way to Yokosuka that nearly did her in. An African American boatswain mate named White led a crew of volunteers into after steering, a potential death trap, and drained water away from steering telemotors saving the day. Hats off to you Mr. White. If any of this information sounds familiar get in touch.

I served in the Rigger shop at Binh Thuy (was a PR-3 at the time) from June, 1969 to June, 1970. I did a one month TDY to Cam Rahn Bay. I would love to hear from anyone else who was in that shop at that time. I've lost touch with all of them. I did a second tour off the coast of Vietnam on the Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) with VA-52 (an A-6 Intruder squadron). This was the WestPac of 1970-71.
