Great site. Very familiar stuff. I was an Army fixed-wing pilot at Can Tho and knew the entire Mekong Delta
very well. On Armed Forces Day, 1968 my roommate and I took a ride, for fun, on a PBR. (It sounded like
a good idea at the time.) Boat was to pick us up off a floating dock at Can Tho, but the throttle jammed and
it charged right up on top the float - chased us up the ladder. Despite that start, it was one of the most
memorable days of my life. We went about thirty miles down the Bassac on a MEDCAP. Stopped at
several villages. Took lots of pictures. Finally I wandered off alone, down a treeline taking pictures.
A little girl tugged at my sleeve, pointed at some hootches about thirty yards away and said: "VC."
So, I didn't take any more pictures. In fact I went back and stood by the twin fifties for a while.

Second time I've gone through your pix and stories. Thought I signed a guest book about a year ago.
I used to fly into Rach Gia during 1968. Who can ever forget buzzing the guards so they could lower the gates to block road traffic so we could land.
I was the senior engineer advisor to the 21st Infantry Division, located in Bac Lieu. I actually worked mostly with the 21st Infantry Division Engineer Battalion, which was stationed in Soc Trang.
Never knew you guys were there, near Rach Gia! Some coordination, huh?
Spent many days in your area. We were responsible for the lower six provinces, and I spent time in Rach Gia, Can Tho, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, Cha La, and down into the UMinh Forest.
Was in country, 17 Jan 68 - 9 Jan 69.
As before, your pix of Rach Gia bring back old memories.
The "Brown Water Navy" is a marvelous piece of work!

I really enjoyed your site, I was also in the Brownwater Navy. Stationed at Binh Thuy in the 1st DIV.(70-71) operating
Mike 8 and Mike 6 boats. We made regular trips to Rach Soi, Chou Doc,Dong Tam, and alot of places I can't remember the names of.
Spent three months at ATSB Moc Hoa on the Cambodian border( that was a trip).I hadn't thought of these places in 25 or so year.
I remember going to, I think it was Rach Soi and catching a ride into Rach Gia, anyway whereever it was there was five or so sailors
and we couldnot get a ride back so we decided to walk. It was around midnight, we started walking and I remember coming
to a bridge and there was an old papa son on guard duty and he tried to get us to go back, we continued to walk.
Anyway, small arms fire started up and we hit the side of the road. When I looked up I was laying on a grave
staring at a tombstone, scared to death, I thought what a place to die.ha No one was hurt and we made it back.
Thinking back on the situation it may have been papason having alittle fun.

Record 1067 Got to this site trying to find info on a SEAL team we worked with in the summer of 1968 on Nui Coto mountain in the Seven Mountains region of the Mekong delta.
B-40's airboat detachment was co-located with us at Moc Hoa and we had numerous interactions with the brownwater Navy forces in our area.
While on Coto (a place called Chau Kim knoll) I actually "worked" the 5" guns of the USS Blue just off shore in the Gulf of Siam. That was a trip!!!
Later in Hong Kong they were in the harbour and I got a chance to visit the ship. That was even more of a "trip" for them and me.
Still trying to find out that info. If Gary R. Smith, author of "Death in the Delta" reads this, he might be able to shed some (retrospective) light on the events of that operation, particularly from the SEAL point-of-view.
Great Web Site. Your work and effort is greatly appreciated.
Good fortune & God speed.

Record 2041 I was forward gunner on Petersons,s boat. BM1 Yakey was
patrol leader. The other crew members were Hubbard (snipe)
and Moon, after gunner. I also was on Dotson,s boat
with Gurney. Gurney cut my beret ribbon on my 5th patrol. What ever happened on patrol with LCMD Shepard
when he took the Times Life photojornalist up river on MEDCAP. I ran off Peterson,s boat, per orders of Yakey, to get Sea Wolfs up. The Sea Wolfs were on the incorrect channel and didn't here the fire fight. The boat Shepard was on and his cover boat were under heavy fire. When I cleared the wall of the friendly camp I tried to jump over a pool of water and fell into a trap. I was drowning and all I could feel was the air on my fingers. I had my piece in my grip and all of a sudden I was being lifted out of the trap by the seawolf gunners. The gunners loaded me on to their seawolf and I blurted out the proper op frequency and started to vomit. The next day I had a high temperature and was waiting for YN1 Morrison to take me to the hospital and I walked off base. I was told later that I had fallen into a ditch unconsious and I was taken to an Army Hospital located in the Bien Thuy area. I was in a comma and finally came out of it several weeks later. I do remember that I had lost almost half my body weight. My unit was transfered to the USS Garriet County while I was in the hospital. I was told the door gunners of the Seawolf, who saved my life that day, were quartered forward on this LST. I went over to their quarters and fell down the lader and caught my arm on a S-hook holding the lader. I was literally meat on a hook. The door gunners again assisted me by taking me to Doc. To make a long story short I would be medivaced back to the States for more surgery and physical therapy.
I would deeply appreciate anyone knowing what happened on the day of the fire fight to contact me. I would love to here from any members of PBR Section 512.
